Anti-encroachment drive removes illegal structures on way to Ellora Caves
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A total of 585 encroachments along a stretch of road from Padegaon to Mitmita leading to UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ellora Caves were removed by the local civic body on Thursday.
The day-long action saw many multi-storied commercial buildings that came up illegally being erased by civic squads. As many as 350 civic employees and staffers were roped in for the drive carried out in the presence of 250 policemen.
"Notices were served well in advance to locals who encroached upon land in Padegaon and Mitmita areas. The drive was carried out after necessary marking. Organised efforts are being made so that fresh encroachments do not come up in areas freed from illegal structures," additional municipal commissioner, Santosh Wahule, who heads the anti-encroachment cell of CSMC, said.
In the recent past, the local civic body had cleared illegal structures on major roads, including Beed Bypass, Jalna Road, and Paithan Road.
Meanwhile, local residents have demanded construction of a service road on Beed Bypass at the earliest to avoid fresh encroachments. "The Beed Bypass has emerged as the fastest developing commercial and residential area in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Chances are high that fresh encroachments will usurp the space meant for service road," said Babasaheb Shelar, a resident of Satara.
