How to become a real high flyer... woman's journey from air hostess to top pilot

For many pilots, their interactions with passengers are limited to announcements over the PA. However, Sarah Johnson has an expert knowledge of the people she carries, as a former air hostess. The 39-year-old Scot spent seven years in cabin crew for Emirates as she saved the £70,000 needed to fund her pilot training. She said: 'I've always been fascinated by planes, even as a girl.' But when she left school and studied to become a translator at a Spanish university, she didn't dare believe that she would one day become a pilot. Ms Johnson, from Birse, Aberdeenshire, said: 'Attitudes to women pilots were different 20 years ago. I thought I was being silly – I was good at languages and becoming a translator was the road set out for me. 'But I couldn't shake the feeling that I wanted to be a pilot. I saw an opportunity to become a flight attendant, which meant that at least I'd be flying.' In 2010 she moved to Dubai to work for Emirates and said: 'Flying to Japan and Australia was amazing but I wanted to be flying the plane. I got into so much trouble as cabin crew because no one could ever find me. I'd be in the cockpit when I had the chance.' Ms Johnson embarked on a gruelling schedule, attending flying school in Los Angeles during layovers after 17-hour flights from Dubai. She said: 'The training was intense – after long-haul flights to Australia or New Zealand, I'd be up all night studying principles of flight or air law. It was tough.' After getting her pilot's wings, Sarah landed a job with Ryanair as a cadet pilot, moving up to junior pilot, senior first officer and then captain two years ago. Ms Johnson, who lives in Palma, Mallorca, with her financial consultant fiancé, said: 'I still can't believe I'm captain. When I had only two stripes, I used to put them together on my shoulder and look in the mirror, imagining what it would be like to have four as captain. My favourite part is the take-off. 'Every time I press the take-off thrust, it's such a thrill. 'A special moment was when I had my mum Chris and dad Martin as passengers. Of course, Dad made a dad joke about being relieved we landed safely. I can't see myself ever changing career. I'm lucky to have a job like this.'

Down to the wire if you haven't returned your Special Election ballot

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The deadline for Colorado Springs' Special election is coming up on Tuesday, June 17. All Ballots are due by 7.p.m. on Tuesday. 'The most important thing is if you want to have a voice. We all know everybody has an opinion because we hear it all the time, right? So, the way to make it really heard is to vote that ballot,' said Sarah Johnson, the City Clerk for Colorado Springs. There is only one question on this ballot, and that is whether to give the go-ahead to the city to approve the Karman Line annexation, which would add 1,800 acres of land west of Schriever Space Force Base. The annexation has plans to have 6,5000 home built on the new land. The deadline for mail-in ballots has passed, but you can still drop yours off at any of the City's drop box locations. You can also track the ballot counts as they come in on the City's website. Some in the community have reported that their ballot envelope came pre-sealed. The city thinks that the humid weather lately may have caused the glue to melt. Officials recommend taping the envelope shut or mailing it in an envelope of your own, you just need to make sure that you sign the back so they can verify that it is your ballot. 'We verify signatures. That's how we know that you actually cast that ballot, and that's how we do it. It's based upon the signature on your voter registration file, which could be the last time you got your driver's license… It can be the last time you voted,' Johnson said. 'There's a series of signature images to compare to… So cutting up the envelope will have absolutely no effect to how we can verify that signature.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Ballots to be mailed Friday for Karman Line vote

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Ballots will be mailed on Friday, May 23 for a special election in Colorado Springs, which could decide how the city grows in the decades ahead. The only question on this ballot is whether the 1,800 acre annexation of the proposed Karman Line Development will move forward. The land is west of Schriever Space Force Base, and developers plan to build about 6,500 new homes there. However, some in the community have raised concerns about water, emergency services, animals, and uncontrolled growth. A 'yes' vote means the annexation would get the green light, while a 'no' vote would overturn the annexation. 'We're going to be delivering a little over 330,000 ballot packets to our local post office here in town, so you should start seeing those ballots perhaps in your mailbox Saturday, or Tuesday, don't forget Monday is a holiday, no postal service that day,' said Sarah Johnson, City Clerk for Colorado Springs. City Council approved the annexation in January but enough signatures were gathered on a petition to hold a special election on the issue. All ballots must be returned to the city by 7 p.m. on June 17. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
