Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won with 20.39, and American Chase Jackson was second with 20.06. Mitton, the two-time reigning world indoor champion from Brooklyn, N.S., was coming off a silver-medal performance at last week's Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., where she threw a season-best 20.39. Edmonton's Marco Arop, the reigning world champion in the men's 800 metres, finished fifth despite a season-best time of one minute 42.73 seconds. He entered the event on a roll after winning all three 800-metre races in the inaugural Grand Slam of Track. Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi won in a world-leading and meet-record time of 1:41.44, followed by American Josh Hoey (1:42.01) and Algeria's Djamel Sedjati (1.42.20). Leduc improves own women's 100m national record at Edmonton Athletics Invitational
Audrey Leduc improved her own national record time in the women's 100-metre at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational on Sunday. The Gatineau, Que., sprinter ran a 10.94 time in prelims, eclipsing her previous record mark of 10.95 set at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Leduc was the sole runner in her preliminary group to run sub-11 seconds before going on to win the subsequent final in a time of 11.06. Placing fifth in the final was Sade McCreath of Ajax, Ont., who previously co-held the national record with Leduc in the women's 100m. Savannah Sutherland of Borden, Sask., recorded a personal best time of 50.62 to win the women's 400m final, falling within worlds standard mark (50.75). In the men's 400m, it was Christopher Morales Williams, of Vaughan, Ont., who won the final in a time of 44.85 — the only runner to record a time under 45 seconds. Mitton wins women's shot put On the field side, Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, N.S., put on a show, claiming the women's shot put with a best throw of 19.46m. Jamaica's Danniel Thomas-Dodd also managed a worlds standard mark, placing behind Mitton with a best attempt of 18.83m. On Friday, Mitton placed third in the women's shot put event at the Diamond League stop in Monaco. Canada's Marco Arop finishes 5th in 800m at Diamond League Monaco
Social Sharing Canada's Marco Arop posted a season's-best time to finish fifth in a highly-competitive men's 800 metres race at the Diamond League track and field stop in Monaco on Friday. The field of the Meeting Herculis EBS was comprised of all eight athletes that ran in last summer's final at the Paris Olympic Games. Arop, who won silver at Paris 2024, lingered near the back of the pack well into the second lap of Friday's race. The Edmonton native crossed the line in one minute, 42.73 seconds for his best time of 2025. Reigning Olympic champ Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the event with a world-leading and meet record time of one minute, 41.44 seconds. American Josh Hoey was second (1:42.01) while Paris bronze medallist Djamel Sedjati, of Algeria, was third (1:42.20). Friday marked the first Diamond League appearance of the season for Arop, who was coming off a successful first season of competition in the new Grand Slam Track league. The 26-year-old won all three 800m races in that league, and was crowned the winner of the short distance competition at the Philadelphia stop on June 1. The 29-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., had a top throw of 20m, which slotted her behind the winner, Netherlands' Jessica Schilder (20.39), and second-placed Chase Jackson (20.06), of the U.S. Mitton, the defending world indoor and Diamond League final champ, now has finishes of fifth, fourth, third, and second place through four of five events this season. Those results give her 22 points in her bid to qualify for this year's final, which will see the top six point-getters advance to the Zurich event on Aug. 27. Jackson sits in first place with 30 points, Schilder is in second with 27, with Mitton in third.
