Contractor's excavation works caused July 3 Kuching power outage, says S'wak Energy
KUCHING: A power outage that affected multiple areas here on Thursday (July 3) was caused by a third-party contractor's excavation works, which damaged two underground cables near Green Heights. It was the latest of 33 recorded cases of electrical equipment damage attributed to third-party contractors involving estimated losses of almost RM330,000. Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) said the outage, which occurred at 2.46pm, disrupted supply to parts of BDC, Stampin, Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Stutong, Batu Kawa, Jalan Arang, Third Mile, Jalan Keretapi, Sungai Maong, Jalan Green and Jalan Rock. Several major commercial centres and essential facilities, including the Sarawak General Hospital, Timberland Hospital and KPJ Hospital, were also affected. A technical team from SEB's operations and retail arm, Syarikat Sesco Bhd, restored supply via an alternate source at 2.58pm. "Cable repair works then commenced and were completed by 6am the following day," SEB said in a statement on Monday (July 7). It said the incident was part of a worrying trend of excavation-related damage to underground cables, as some contractors continued to operate near underground infrastructure without prior consultation. "We have made ourselves available to assist contractors in planning their work safely, yet some continue to proceed without engaging us. "Contractors must take greater responsibility to uphold public safety," Sesco western region general manager Effendy Syaiful Abdullah said. "Such incidents not only disrupt essential services but pose serious safety hazards, including risks of electrocution and fire." The statement added that contractors must comply with safety procedures and consult Sesco before undertaking any work in the vicinity of underground cables. The public can report outages or suspicious activities near electrical infrastructure to SEB's customer care centre at 1300-88-3111, customercare@ the SEB Cares mobile app and web portal, or virtual agent Carina.

Sarawak reaffirms stand as Southeast Asia clean energy leader at UK conference
KUCHING: Sarawak has reaffirmed its position as Southeast Asia's clean energy leader, sharing the state's vision for its energy plans at the Energy Export Conference (EEC) 2025 in Aberdeen, United Kingdom (UK). In his keynote address, Sarawak Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni emphasised strong policy commitment, sustained innovation investment and robust regional cooperation as the state's foundation for energy transition. "Sarawak is proud to be a pioneer in Asean when it comes to clean energy development. Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world," he said in a statement issued by his ministry on Thursday night. He said Sarawak's integrated strategy revolves around four strategic hubs – renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen – each designed to foster regional resilience and sustainable growth. "With over 70 per cent of the electricity already derived from hydropower, Sarawak is on track to further expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 2035," he said. He said Sarawak solidified its role as the "Battery of Asean" by actively pursuing regional power exports to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and soon, Singapore. Furthermore, Sarawak leads Malaysia in natural gas reserves and CCS potential. It is also pioneering hydrogen development with flagship projects and dedicated legislation to attract global investors. Meanwhile, Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said global platforms like EEC play a crucial role in establishing resilient energy ecosystems. "Our presence here in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to lead in clean energy exports," he said. At the conference, Sarawak Energy Bhd shared its long-term sustainability agenda and cross-border grid integration plans while Sarawak Economic Development Corporation's subsidiary, SEDC Energy, highlighted ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. "These initiatives underscore Sarawak's commitment to innovation and international partnerships. Supported by comprehensive policies and strategic roadmaps, Sarawak's clean energy initiatives are unlocking new investment opportunities and creating high-value jobs for a sustainable future. "With international recognition from the World Economic Forum and upcoming events such as International Energy Week 2025 and the Sustainable & Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF) 4.0, Sarawak is actively inviting global partners to join its journey toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future," the statement added.

Joint ops uncover crypto-mining power theft in Sibu, RM15,000 loss recorded
The cryptocurrency mining servers found at the premises in Sibu. KUCHING (May 23): Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), through its operations and retail arm Syarikat Sesco Bhd (Sesco), in collaboration with the police, recently uncovered a power theft case linked to cryptocurrency mining at a two-storey shophouse along Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya in Sibu. SEB, in a statement today, said the power theft had resulted in an estimated monthly loss of RM15,000. The utility company reported that the illegal connection involved direct tapping from the incoming mains installed along the five-foot way. A total of 22 cryptocurrency mining servers and related cables were confiscated at the premises, where further inspection revealed severe safety risks, including the potential for electrical fires, electrocution, and damage to surrounding infrastructure. SEB stated that a police report had been lodged. 'Investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. 'Individuals found guilty of electricity theft may face a fine of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.' According to SEB, cryptocurrency mining operations consume large amounts of electricity as servers run continuously and require cooling systems to prevent overheating. 'Illegal connections often bypass essential safety mechanisms, increasing the risk of voltage instability and supply disruptions in the area, which could endanger both occupants and neighbouring properties. 'As such, we urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to electricity theft. 'Landlords and property owners are also advised to thoroughly inspect electrical installations before renting out their premises, as they could be held liable for illegal connections. 'Warning signs of power theft include unusually low electricity bills despite high consumption, or exposed or concealed wiring from the incoming mains,' said SEB. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft. Reports can be made by contacting SEB Customer Care Centre via 1-300-88-3111 or by emailing [email protected]. All reports will be treated with strict confidentiality. cryptocurrency mining power theft Sarawak Energy Sibu
