Dr Hazland: Sarawak-Australia tie-ups possible in energy, environmental sustainability sectors

KUCHING (June 26): Sarawak and Australia are seeking potential collaborations in the field of energy and environmental sustainability, said Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability said this when receiving a courtesy call from Australia's Northern Territory Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill yesterday.
A statement issued by Dr Hazland's office said both leaders noted the similar direction taken by their respective governments in advancing clean energy transition and climate resilience efforts.
Cahill expressed Australia's keen interest in collaborating with Sarawak, particularly with technical expertise and knowledge exchange.
She highlighted Sarawak's progressive approach as a valuable partner in shaping a sustainable energy future.
Dr Hazland welcomed the engagement and shared the state's key initiatives under his ministry including the Sarawak Energy Transition Roadmap (SET-P), Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 (SSB), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER).
These documents provide a comprehensive framework for Sarawak's shift towards a green economy, focusing on renewable energy, carbon reduction and clean technology development, said the statement.
Both parties agreed that the exchange of technical knowledge, joint research, and collaborative programmes could accelerate mutual goals and benefit stakeholders in both regions.
The discussion also touched on opportunities for capacity building, industry academia partnerships, and pilot projects in areas such as hydrogen production, carbon capture, and nature-based solutions.
The courtesy call concluded with a shared commitment to identify actionable pathways for partnership and to maintain regular engagement through bilateral platforms and technical dialogues.
'This meeting marks another step forward in strengthening Sarawak's global ties in environmental sustainability and reaffirms the state's commitment to international cooperation in addressing climate and energy challenges,' added the statement.
