SIBU (July 28): Thirteen teams will vie for the US$2,000 cash prize that await the men's and women's champions in the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational at the Sibu Volleyball Indoor Stadium from July 29 to Aug 3.
The six men's teams are Hong Kong, Thailand, Johor, Miri, Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior.
The seven teams in the women's category are Mongolia, Taipei (Taiwan), Thailand (two teams), Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior.
'Sarawak men's and women's senior teams have been bolstered by the addition of players from Thailand. The men's team now includes four Thai players while the women's team has welcomed two Thai imports.
'The role of the imported players is to mentor and provide our Sarawakian players with exposure to playing on an international stage,' said organising chairperson Stephanie Law at a press conference yesterday on behalf of Dato Moh Wung Ming who is advisor of the organising committee.
The tournament is jointly organised by Sarawak Volleyball Association (SAVA) and Sibu Volleyball Association (SVA). Cash prizes of US$1,000 and US$500 will be awarded to teams which finish second and third respectively.
'So, we are eyeing to be champion in both Men's and Women's categories,' said Law who is also SAVA secretary.
The Guest-of-Honours for the opening on July 29 at 6 pm will be Tan Sri Dato Sri Moh Wung Sing and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
The tournament is part of the early preparations for Sarawak teams for next year's Malaysia Games (Sukma). Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational
