Miri parents appeal for RM95,000 to help 22-month-old daughter hear

MIRI (July 29): The parents of 22-month-old Yvonne Paw are urgently appealing to the public to help raise RM95,000 for an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) operation scheduled for Aug 16, 2025 — a life-changing surgery that could allow her to hear for the first time. CT scans at Miri Hospital revealed that Yvonne was born without cochleae in both ears, rendering her profoundly deaf since birth. The operation will be conducted at Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Kuching, and her family is racing against time to secure the funds needed. She was diagnosed with hearing problems shortly after birth, and her mother Wong Siew Chin and father Paw Keh Chuong are now desperate, placing their hopes in the public's generosity to give their daughter the gift of sound. Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the ABI procedure differs from the more common cochlear implant, as it is meant for patients with absent or damaged cochleae. The estimated cost for Yvonne's operation is RM145,000, of which RM50,000 has already been raised. 'The family has managed to raise RM50,000, but it is still short of RM95,000 with 18 days left to this operation,' he said during a press conference at the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau office on Tuesday. Ting, who is also the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, as well as SUPP Piasau branch chairman and party secretary-general, urged the public to donate through the Miri City Cochlear Implant Society (MCCIS). 'There are only 18 days left as the operation is scheduled to be carried out on Aug 16 this year,' he said. As MCCIS chairman, Ting expressed appreciation to Miri residents for their past generosity, citing the case of Rhea Moh Ning Xuan, a girl who partially regained her hearing after undergoing a successful cochlear implant procedure last year. Ting said Rhea, now one and a half-years-old, underwent surgery on Dec 22, 2024, when she was about one-year-old. Rhea, a previous recipient of a cochlear implant procedure, lies on the shoulder of Ting, who helped kick off the fundraising campaign for her successful operation last year. Her operation was made possible thanks to overwhelming public response to her parents' appeal. Rhea's parents, Moh Nien Chong and Janet Teng, attended Tuesday's press conference in support of the fundraising drive for Yvonne. According to Dr Doris Jong, Rhea is responding well to sounds, especially the 'Happy Birthday' song, and her hearing has improved from profound to moderate loss. She is also beginning to make sounds of her own. Ting made a heartfelt appeal to the public to help Yvonne receive her implant before she turns two, which is a critical milestone for speech and auditory development. 'To those rooting for Yvonne to also hear and eventually learn, please donate to the operation for best results before she reaches the age of two,' he said. All donations will go to a dedicated account for Yvonne's operation. Those interested can contact the SAHATI Service & Information Centre, or donate directly to the Alliance Bank account of the Miri City Cochlear Implant Society: 110270010015028. hearing implants public donations Sebastian Ting surgery

Dialogue session successfully addresses Sibu Jaya residents' concerns, says SRDC deputy chairman
Wong (seated fifth right) and others in a photo session. SIBU (July 28): The Sibu Jaya Community Dialogue Session held on Saturday saw enthusiastic participation from residents, reflecting a strong community interest in local affairs. Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong said the initiative was a step in the right direction as it not only strengthened interactions between the residents and local councils, but also laid a strong foundation for future community improvements. The dialogue held at 5A, Lorong Sibu Jaya 20-I and was organised by the Sarawak United People's Party Sibu Jaya branch. Wong, who is also SUPP Dudong chairman, engaged directly with the public, listening to their views and suggestions regarding development and public concerns in the Sibu Jaya area. 'This event helps build communication bridges between the council and residents, promoting more inclusive and responsive local governance.' Wong said during the dialogue, residents raised several topics, including issues related to stray dogs, clogged drains, and water supply shortages and council representatives took note of these concerns and responded on the spot, assuring attendees that they would coordinate with relevant departments to work toward resolving the issues. Wong said: 'The people's voices are crucial in shaping our policies. We deeply appreciate everyone's candid sharing and welcome more residents to join future dialogues as we build a more liveable Sibu Jaya together.' He said similar engagements would continue to be organised, with enhanced promotion and follow-up mechanisms to ensure public concerns are effectively addressed. Also present were SUPP Sibu Jaya branch chairman Kapitan Kong Sing Ping, Pemanca Paing Tawi, and political secretary to the Premier, William Anut. community dialogue session lead sibu jaya Wong Ching Yong

Focus on real progress for Sarawak, not finger-pointing over MA63, says Dapsy man
Wong King Yii KUCHING (July 26): There is a need for greater accountability and focus on real progress in addressing Sarawak's development needs and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) rights, rather than placing blame on current federal efforts. In stating this, Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak treasurer Wong King Yii said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap was wrong to question the significance of the federal government's efforts to reduce national borrowings. 'With respect, YB Wilfred Yap's argument that such efforts are meaningless if Sarawak continues to be sidelined seems somewhat misplaced,' he said in a statement issued in response to Yap's recent remarks. Wong said reducing borrowings from RM99 billion in 2021 to RM77 billion in 2023 was not 'meaningless', but a sign of responsible governance. 'It means less public debt, stronger investor confidence, and a healthier economy for future generations. 'If anything, this is precisely the kind of financial discipline we need to ensure there's actually money left for meaningful development, including in Sarawak,' he said. Wong said the state government, of which Yap's Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) is part of, had enjoyed decades of full political alignment with the federal government. He claimed, however, that during that time, basic infrastructure, healthcare, education, and equitable development in many parts of Sarawak, had been neglected. 'The question isn't why Sarawak is only getting attention now, it's why nothing was done before.' Wong credited the Unity Government for several key developments benefitting Sarawak, including the handover of Bintulu Port and MASwings to the state; the historic Petronas-Petros settlement; and increased annual grants under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution. 'Importantly, all of this was achieved while the federal government reduced borrowing – not increased them,' he added. Wong noted Yap's recent public comments about the MA63 and called for Sarawak's rights to be upheld, saying that Dapsy welcomed all views on the issue. However, Wong said Sarawakians rightfully expected more than just statements; rather, they expected action. 'Public expressions of concern must be accompanied by meaningful efforts, especially when the Premier of Sarawak is already actively engaged in ongoing MA63 negotiations with the federal government,' he said. Wong urged Yap to reflect not only on federal policy matters, but also on the role his own coalition in the Sarawak government could play, claiming that there had been many opportunities to act on MA63 within the state's own administration. 'Let us all do our part to move beyond rhetoric and toward real outcomes for the people of Sarawak,' he said. DAPSY lead MA63 Wilfred Yap
