INDIA has shown its mettle in chess by securing an impressive 7 medals out of a total of 18 at the FIDE World Cup in the Under-8 to Under-12 age categories. This marks the highest medal haul by any nation at the event. The tournament, featuring the world's most promising young chess players, witnessed intense competition across multiple age and gender divisions. The Indian contingent rose to the challenge, clinching three World Championship titles and four additional podium finishes. Kolkata, July 6 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today congratulated two kids from the state for winning medals under-10 in FIDE-organised chess tournament at Batumi, Georgia, recently. "Congratulations to our two boys from Bengal, Sarbartho Mani and Oishik Mondal, for their fabulous international success in Chess at Batumi, Georgia," she said. " We are proud of the two young chess stars as Sarbartho Mani clinches the Gold and Oishik Mondal brings home the Silver in the (under 10 category of) World Cup Championship organised by FIDE (World Chess Federation). " Your outstanding achievements on the global stage are an inspiration to all of us. Wishing you both continued success in your journey ahead! " the CM said. The amazing moment for Bengal was when Sarbartho Mani won the Gold medal at the FIDE World Cup Cadets 2025 Under-10 Open. Sarbartho drew both of his classical games against compatriot Oishik Mondal. Indian chess looks to be in good hands as the country's youngsters shone brightly at different world age-group meets this week. While India clinched seven including three gold, two silver and two bronze medals at World Cadet Chess Cup that concluded in Batumi, Georgia, they ended the Asian junior and girls meet in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, with a haul of six medals across classical, rapid and blitz formats in open and girls sections. India got a new world champion when Sarbartho Mani won gold in the U-10 open section in Batumi.
