Veteran actor-producer Dheeraj Kumar passes away at 79 due to pneumonia

Renowned actor, producer, and television pioneer Dheeraj Kumar died on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, at the age of 79 due to complications from acute pneumonia. The veteran personality was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been placed under intensive care and ventilator support in his final days. Tomorrow at 6 am, his mortal remains will be taken home from the hospital and held until 10 am as a sign of respect. At 11 am, the last ceremonies will be held at the Pawan Hans cremation site in Vile Parle West. His contributions to television and Hindi and Punjabi films were well-known. Dheeraj Kumar dies of pneumonia Kumar's close associate and family friend Ajay Shukla informed PTI, "He passed away this morning at 11:00 am due to pneumonia at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was unwell and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as he was having fever, cold and cough. He was admitted to the ICU due to his age". Shukla added that Kumar's last rites will be conducted at Pawan Hans Crematorium on Wednesday. Kumar's family confirmed the news of his death in a statement. 'With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of veteran actor, producer and director and beloved human being Dheeraj Kumar on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, around 12 noon, surrounded by family...' The family stated, "He was always laughing, always giving, and always present for his family, friends, and the industry at large. A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many. He will be remembered not just as an actor but as a mentor, a gentle soul, and a true gentleman. We thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time". Who was Dheeraj Kumar? Dheeraj Kumar worked in the television and film industry for more than 50 years. He started his career in the entertainment industry as a finalist in a 1965 talent competition that also included filmmaker Subhash Ghai and superstar Rajesh Khanna. After starring in the lead role in the 1970 movie Raaton Ka Raja, he went on to appear in a number of Hindi and Punjabi productions. He also played a minor role in films like Sargam (1979), Kranti (1981), and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974). Between 1970 and 1984, Kumar appeared in more than 20 films and was a well-known figure in Punjabi cinema. He established the production company Creative Eye Limited in 1986, which later had a big impact on Indian television. Popular mythological and family dramas such as Om Namah Shivay, which aired on Doordarshan National from 1997 to 2001, Shree Ganesh, Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati, Adalat, and Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann were made by the firm under his direction.

Producer, director, and actor Dheeraj Kumar died after suffering from breathing problems and pneumonia on Tuesday. He was 80. He was admitted at the Kokilaben hospital, Mumbai on July 12 (Saturday). What's Happening Dheeraj Kumar's condition was critical. He was on a life support in ICU, his family confirmed through a statement. "His condition is critical, and he is currently on ventilator support in the ICU. Doctors are closely monitoring his health, and all necessary medical care is being provided. The family requests prayers for his speedy recovery and urges everyone to respect their privacy during this difficult time," a statement issued by the family and his production team read. Dheeraj Kumar's Achievements Dheeraj Kumar worked in Hindi films like Roti kapda aur makan, Sargam, Kranti and many more. He entered the entertainment industry in 1965. He was one of the finalists of a talent show along with Subhash Ghai and Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna was the eventual winner. He acted in 21 Punjabi films from 1970 to 1984. He started a production company, Creative Eye and is its chairman and managing director. In the film Swami, the song Ka Karoon Sajani, Aaye Na Balam was picturised on him. He has also worked in other films like Heera Panna, Raaton Ka Raja. Earlier, Dheeraj had attended the inaugural ceremony of ISKCON temple in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai. He had praised PM Modi's efforts in supporting the spread of Sanatan Dharma. He had earlier said, "I came here with a sense of humility. While they called me the VVIP, I believe the true VVIP is God. Prime Minister Modi spoke about the grandeur and significance of the ISKCON temple, and his words are always inspiring. The love and affection of the people here have deeply touched me. The spiritual importance of phrases like 'Radhe Radhe Krishna Krishna' is very significant, and I feel peaceful visiting this temple". Cusat to expedite construction of amphitheatre

Kochi: Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) decided to expedite construction of the amphitheatre, which has been remaining closed since the tragic stampede incident in 2023. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The decision was announced during the university senate meeting held on Friday, with officials confirming that tendering process for the project began and university intends its completion before second anniversary of the stampede. In the meeting, Cusat student union chairperson Kurien Biju raised the matter stating that the auditorium is essential for hosting various events such as university arts festival Sargam and departmental fests like Dhishna and Talentime, among others. He further stated that due to the absence of this facility, organizing events has become challenging for a university with such a large student population and urged to complete the auditorium's renovation and reopen it immediately. A senior university official told TOI that university already received a quotation for civil and engineering works of the amphitheatre. "Works would begin immediately," said the official. Meanwhile, university authorities said road beside the amphitheatre will not be opened as the amphitheatre is to be rebuilt, extending towards the nearby road to ensure safety. "In the current design road beside the auditorium will be taken over for construction," said a senior official. The stampede which occurred during Dhishna tech festival hosted by Cusat's school of engineering (SoE) on Nov 25, 2023, claimed four lives. The incident happened minutes before popular singer Nikitha Gandhi was to perform at open-air auditorium on the campus.
