Former diplomat Navtej Sarna is guest at Explained.Live today
Israel's military offensive on the Gaza Strip has killed at least 60,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023, when 1200 Israelis were killed and 250 were taken hostage by Hamas militants. The conflict expanded between Israel and Iran, as Israel and the US struck Iranian cities that housed nuclear facilities and military bases. Iran too struck back on Israel's oil refineries, military bases and cities. This has triggered unprecedented turmoil and crisis in the region. As the situation is complex, there are many questions: Has Israel established dominance over Iran? Is there a possibility of a regime change in Iran? Has Israeli PM Netanyahu over-reached? Will President Trump bring peace to the Middle East? What does the Israel-Iran conflict mean for India? What happens to the humanitarian situation in Gaza? To answer these questions and more, join with former Indian Ambassador to Israel, the US and the UK, Navtej Sarna, who has also served in Tehran, at 6 pm on July 30. Jharkhand Cong initiates process to set up panchayat-level committees
Ranchi, Jul 19 (PTI) Jharkhand Congress president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh on Saturday said the party has initiated a process to set up committees at the panchayat level. He said block-level committees have already been set up. 'There will be 12 members in a panchayat committee, comprising president, two vice presidents and nine general secretaries," Kamlesh said, addressing the party's 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' (organisation rejuvenation campaign) and training programme here. Kamlesh said mandal committees will also be set up once the exercise of constituting panchayat committees is completed, as the president of the panchayat committee will be a member of the mandal committee. The event was attended by block presidents, block observers and mandal presidents of Ranchi and Khunti districts, besides senior party leaders and state ministers. The party's appointment letters were also handed over to the newly appointed mandal presidents on the occasion. 'The block presidents, observers and mandal presidents will visit villages and speak to the people and elected members of panchayat committees to know about the issues. Constituting a panchayat committee is a tough task, as we have to find persons who are fully devoted to the Congress," he said. 'We held a workshop on PESA in Ranchi. A model PESA law will be implemented," he added. Kamlesh said that the party is also fighting for the inclusion of Sarna religious code in the upcoming Census. Shah in city to chair eastern zonal council meet today
Ranchi: As Jharkhand is set to host the crucial eastern zonal meeting in Ranchi on Thursday, chaired by Union home minister Amit Shah , the ruling dispensation here is pinning high hopes on getting special fiscal assistance from the Centre. Two years ago, when Odisha hosted a similar meeting, the Centre approved several crucial schemes and proposals to bolster development works there. By Wednesday evening, representatives from participating states began to arrive in Ranchi. Around 7:30 pm, Bihar's deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, accompanied by Vijay Kumar Chudhary (water resources minister), landed in the state capital along with a bevy of their officials. Representatives from Odisha and Chhattisgarh were also slated to arrive by late night, with some expected early in the morning. Shah also reached the city on Wednesday night. Chief minister Hemant Soren, who is in Delhi for the last few weeks attending to his ailing father and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren, is likely to attend Thursday's meeting, slated to start at 10:30 am at a city hotel near Overbridge. Speaking to reporters outside the airport, Bihar deputy CM said, "The meeting is crucial for all eastern states, including Bihar. From our point of view, we will take up issues of water sharing with bordering states and the division of assets with Jharkhand, many of which are still to be resolved after the bifurcation of Bihar in 2000, among others." Jharkhand, however, is expecting that their long-pending demand of Rs 1.36 lakh crore in lieu of mining-related activities to the states will get due consideration. Congress's leader and Khijri MLA Rajesh Kachchap said, "It's a proud moment for Jharkhand to host such a crucial meeting, and we are hopeful that the home minister will ensure that our dues, which are pending with the Centre, are given to us. We are also asking for special fiscal assistance and our pending funds in different coffers, which the finance minister and our alliance govt have already raised at several platforms. " He also raised the Sarna code issue. "It is among the key demands of Jharkhand, for which the Hemant Soren govt even passed a resolution from the state assembly and sent it to the Centre and President of India," he said. JMM, which is leading the alliance govt here, also hoped that the meeting will be fruitful for Jharkhand. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, JMM's central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharjee reiterated the demand for special fiscal assistance and increasing central shares to the state. "When Odisha hosted a similar meeting two years ago, it ended up receiving special focus from the GOI to bolster development. While we welcome that, we hope Jharkhand too will get equal treatment from the meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister tomorrow," he said. Meanwhile, the district administration is on high alert to ensure proper law and order both in Ranchi and elsewhere in the state. In the evening, Ranchi IG Manoj Kaushik took stock of the security preparedness at various key places, including the airport. Traffic police have already announced vehicular curbs at different places, from the airport to the meeting venue.

Tribals and the Hindutva framework: New book explores RSS's evolving views
From Sarna to Ghar Wapsi, this book breaks new ground on the evolution of RSS's thinking on tribals and complex questions such as their treatment after conversion to Christianity premium Aditi Phadnis Listen to This Article Adivasi or Vanvasi: Tribal India and the Politics of Hindutva by Kamal Nayan Choubey Published by Penguin Random House India 281 pages ₹799 Academic research in this area is sparse, as the book itself reveals. There are many scholarly works on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) but hardly any attention has been paid to the organisation's outreach to tribals, with the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram (VKA) being treated as just another Sangh affiliate. And so, though there is little by way of comparison or competition, it would not be faint praise to say that the book is outstanding, for it breaks new
