TMC, BJP in war of words over fact-finding team's recommendations

New Delhi/Kolkata: Trinamool Congress and BJP were locked in a war of words on Tuesday after the latter's fact-finding team recommended a probe by a central agency into the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata. The team claimed the state police's handling of the case raised suspicion of attempts being made to save the culprits. The team also recommended that a request be made to the Centre for "effective measures" to control the situation in the state, said former Union minister and former Mumbai Police chief Satya Pal Singh at a press conference. Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh told reporters: "This BJP fact-finding committee, led by Satyapal Singh, is shamelessly lying and distorting the truth. What happened is a social crime, and an inquiry is underway. Police arrested the culprits within a few hours, an investigation is ongoing; so why do they need to create drama?" If any wrongdoing occurs here, Mamata Banerjee govt takes police action. What about UP, MP, Tripura, Manipur, Gujarat, Delhi, Odisha? A few days ago, a police constable in UP raped a student, and two days before that, a nurse was murdered inside a hospital in MP. Does this fact-finding team go there or not?" he added. Sharing the findings of the team with the media, Singh alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the survivor was tampered with to remove names of the accused. Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra claimed the Kolkata Police commissioner (Manoj Jha) was evasive in his reply when the inquiry committee asked him to clarify why names were erased. Ghosh said: "BJP fact-finding teams don't go to BJP-governed states because they only get travel allowances to visit Bengal. If political tourists come to Bengal and want to find facts, why didn't they include the woman who spoke out against Karthik Maharaj?"

Kolkata gang-rape: BJP fact-finding team recommends central agency probe

A BJP fact-finding team has recommended a probe by a central agency into the gang rape of a law student in Kolkata, claiming the state police's way of handling the case raises suspicion of attempts being made to save the culprits. Panel member Satya Pal Singh alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove accused's names.(ANI) Alleging a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal, it has also recommended that a request be made to the Centre for some "effective measures" to control the situation in the state, said former Union minister and ex-Mumbai police chief Satya Pal Singh. He made the remark at a press conference on Tuesday as part of the fact-finding team. The four-member team comprising BJP MP and former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and former Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, besides Satya Pal Singh, submitted its report to party president J P Nadda here on Tuesday. Sharing with the media the findings of the BJP panel, Singh said there were questions on the registration of the case and its investigation by the Kolkata Police. He alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove the names of the accused she had mentioned. "Police erased the names of the accused that the victim had given in her handwritten complaint and put in letters J, G, S, M in place of those names. When the police have tampered with the complaint itself, which is the basic document in the case, how can one hope that the victim and her family will get justice?" He said the committee has recommended that either a probe by a central agency be initiated or a high-level independent inquiry by persons of repute be instituted to ensure justice to the victim and her family. Mishra claimed the Kolkata Police Commissioner (Manoj Jha) was evasive in his reply when the enquiry committee asked him to clarify why names were erased and some letters were put in their place. The Kolkata Police's actions, like "tampering with the FIR and swift arrest of four accused", raise a big suspicion, he said. Singh said the BJP committee noted growing atrocities and crimes against women in West Bengal and police inaction in many such cases. "There is a total collapse of law and order in West Bengal," he said. Slamming the ruling Trinamool Congress over the law student's gang-rape, Deb demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take responsibility for the incident. "She has no right to continue in her post," he said.

Politics criminalised, criminals are given protection by TMC: BJP's Meenakashi Lekhi

Kolkata, (West Bengal) [India] June 30 (ANI): A four-member fact-finding committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday addressed the media regarding the recent alleged gangrape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College, BJP leader Satya Pal Singh, member of the BJP fact-finding team for the South Calcutta Law College gangrape case. BJP leader Meenakashi Lekhi said that the political system in West Bengal has broken down as politics has been criminalised and the ruling TMC party is giving protection to the criminals. '... As a woman and an Indian citizen, I stand with all women who have been victims of such crimes. Politics has been criminalised and criminals are given protection by the ruling party. Now, with political protection, criminals are being appointed to colleges. The whole political system has broken down and the civilians are paying the price for it...', Lekhi said. While speaking to ANI, BJP leader Satya Pal Singh, member of the BJP fact-finding team, alleged that women and men in West Bengal are unsafe while the goons are given protection. Singh said, 'I have been coming to West Bengal for the last many years. Women are unsafe, the common man is unsafe, goons are given protection, and governance has failed. We have asked the Police Commissioner as well, that at least complaints made by women should be registered and an investigation must be carried out...' BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb, another member of the BJP fact-finding team, questioned CM Mamata Banerjee whether she is able to protect women in West Bengal. 'Mamata Banerjee should feel ashamed as a woman and as a CM that another party's delegation had come to look into the case. She could have done it herself, but she didn't... Can she face the fact that she is not being able to give protection to women? A criminal was appointed to a law college. Before appointing anyone for a job, a criminal verification is carried out. Why was he given this job despite his background?...' Deb said. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul attacked CM Mamata Banerjee, stating that the CM herself has made remarks against women. 'Mamata Banerjee should send a show cause notice to Anubrata Mondal and arrest him. Before this, Kalyan Banerjee had also insulted women. Mamata Banerjee has also made remarks against women...', Paul said. On June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area. The police have arrested four persons, including the main accused Manojit Mishra, and formed a five-member Special team to investigate the incident. (ANI)
