(File photo/iStockPhoto/Zorandimzr) A 43-year-old man faces multiple charges, including impaired driving and drug possession, after Sault police found him asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle last week. At about 7:30 p.m. on July 18, officers on patrol in the 100 block of Wellington Street West noticed a vehicle stopped on Brown Street with the driver asleep inside. Upon approaching, police observed drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who showed signs of impairment. (File photo/GettyImages/urbazon) 'A search of the vehicle located a small quantity of suspected cocaine,' said the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service in a news release Monday. The accused was transported to the Police Services Building on Second Line East, where a Drug Recognition Expert confirmed the motorist was impaired by drugs. The man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of impaired driving. In addition to the charges, under provincial legislation, the driver also received a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days at the owner's expense. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 22, 2025.

In both cases, officers detected signs of impairment during routine traffic stops, leading to multiple criminal and traffic-related charges. (File photo/ShutterStock/Bignai) The first incident occurred in the early hours of July 12, when officers patrolling Wellington Street East noticed a vehicle with unauthorized licence plates parked in an alleyway at about 3 a.m. After approaching the driver, a 32-year-old woman, police suspected drug impairment. 'Officers also saw drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle,' said the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service in a news release Monday. The woman failed a standardized field sobriety test and a drug recognition expert later confirmed she was impaired by drugs. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 'drug paraphernalia and drug residue.' The accused faces charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle, drug possession and four charges related to improper or missing vehicle documentation under the Highway Traffic and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Acts along with two impaired driving offences. She was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 15. (File photo/iStock/pairhandmade) About 24 hours later, officers conducting speed enforcement on Trunk Road pulled over a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed just after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Upon interacting with the 35-year-old male driver, officers suspected alcohol impairment. 'The accused provided a breath sample into an approved screening device, which registered as a fail,' police said. Subsequent breath tests at the police station, police said, confirmed his blood alcohol concentration was over the legal limit. As a result, he was charged with speeding and two impaired driving offences – including operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80. This accused was also released on an appearance notice, with his court date set for Aug. 11. In addition to the charges Under provincial legislation, both drivers received 90-day licence suspensions and the vehicles involved were impounded for seven days at the owner's expense. Authorities remind motorists that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol carries severe penalties. Impaired driving is a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada and upon conviction, drives may; lose their licence, have their vehicle impounded, need to attend an education or treatment program, be required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle or even face jail time and end up with a criminal record.
