The median home in Chippewa County listed for $249,450 in May, down 3.9% from the previous month's $259,500, an analysis of data from shows. Compared to May 2024, the median home list price decreased 10.6% from $278,975. The statistics in this article only pertain to houses listed for sale in Chippewa County, not houses that were sold. Marie is alerting the public, especially those in the real estate industry, about a scam involving text messages falsely claiming to be from a PUC field technician. 'These messages typically warn of an upcoming service disconnection and may request a response or follow-up call,' PUC said in a news release Friday. Poor grammar, odd area code 'PUC would like to clarify that we do not send text messages regarding service disconnections. Scammers would likely use deceptive tactics to trick recipients into responding.' The messages often have poor spelling or unusual grammar, PUC said, display out-of-province area codes such as 718 and may reference incorrect or mismatched property addresses. Anyone who receives such a message should not respond in any way. Instead, customers are asked to contact PUC to verify a message at 705-759-6500 or email 'PUC urges everyone to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity,' the release said.

Five people in the Sault charged with drug and weapons offences following police raid
Sault police found drugs suspected to be 389.08 grams of fentanyl, 14.99 grams of suspected cocaine, a loaded handgun, a revolver, ammunition, six cellphones, three digital weigh scales, drug packaging materials and a cutting agent. Two guns and more than $59,850 in suspected fentanyl and cocaine were seized during a police operation Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie. City police executed a search warrant at a residence on Northern Avenue East around 2 p.m., with help from the Ontario Provincial Police. Five people were arrested and a search of the residence and garages were conducted. Fentanyl, cocaine In a news release, police said they 'located approximately 389.08 grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately 14.99 grams of suspected cocaine, a loaded handgun, a revolver, ammunition, six cellphones, three digital weigh scales, drug packaging materials and a cutting agent.' Two women ages 29 and 41, along with two men ages 31 and 54, were charged with drug trafficking and firearm offences. They were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 25. A fifth man, age 46, was also charged with drug trafficking and weapons offences, along with 16 counts of possession of firearm or ammunition while prohibited and eight counts of failing to comply with a release order. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
