19-year-old jailed 5 years for sexually assaulting sister
MUAR: A teenager was sentenced to five years in prison and two strokes of the cane by the Session's Court here today after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting his 14-year-old sister.
The defendant, 19, who is unemployed, pleaded with journalists not to take pictures of him as he was led into the court.
Judge Sayani Mohd Noor handed down the sentence following submissions from the prosecution, which emphasised the gravity of the offence.
The defendant was convicted under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16 of the act, which carries up to 20 years in jail and caning.
According to the case facts, the offence occurred at a residence in Batu Pahat about 10am on July 4.
The abuse came to light when the victim's mother took her to the hospital for treatment as she had bruises on her neck.
Medical staff found that her injuries were consistent with abuse and lodged a police report.
The court heard that the victim was using her phone in her bedroom when the defendant, who has a different father, entered and attempted to commit sexual assault.
The victim thwarted the assault, then the defendant left the room.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Othman Affan Ismail. The accused was not represented.
The court ordered the defendant to be placed under police supervision for one year after serving his sentence.
