Dhofar Museum opens; to promote heritage and cultural tourism

SALALAH: The Dhofar Museum opened in the Wilayat of Salalah under the auspices of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, on Monday. The opening of the new museum is part of efforts aimed at promoting heritage and cultural tourism in Dhofar Governorate. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hamza bin Mohammed al Ghassani, a member of the Board of Directors of Dhofar Museum, explained that the museum's vision is not limited to documentation or display but also includes educating generations, serving researchers and school and university students as well as promoting heritage and cultural tourism in the Sultanate of Oman, and Dhofar Governorate in particular. The museum features several environments, each displaying a section that highlights the history of the region, such as Islamic culture, terminology and images. — ONA Al Ghassani explained that the museum's objectives are introducing the historical perspective of human cultural heritage, building a unique broad base for contemporary thought, and documenting all aspects of heritage within an integrated cultural project that describes the vital aspects of our ancient heritage. The museum provides means of facilitating visitors' enjoyment and discovery of the details of the scientific material, enabling them to explore these exhibits as they tour through the museum's halls using modern technological means for informational materials and valuable collections the details of which are available in four languages (Arabic, English, French and German). The museum also allows Omani craftsmen to display specialised traditional crafts, encouraging them and achieving professional and institutional integration. It also embodies aspects of the past of Dhofar Governorate, including the civilisations of Samahram, Al Baleed, and Ubar, and their important cultural, civilisational and commercial roles. It also highlights the historical maritime role of the Sultanate of Oman and its relations with ancient cultures and civilisations. The museum features coastal, rural, desert, and urban environments. It includes several sections that showcase the Samahram and Al Baleed civilisations, the Omani character, Dhofari culture, architectural heritage, traditional crafts, folk dances, hunting, the coconut tree, agricultural crops, Dhofari cuisine, traditional Dhofari clothing, Dhofari weapons, documents, manuscripts, photographs and coins. — ONA

RO5.3mn moringa tree project launched in Thumrait

Salalah – An agreement for a major agricultural investment project to grow moringa trees and manufacture byproducts supporting food security, environmental sustainability and export diversification was signed on Wednesday. An usufruct contract covering an area of 10.5mn sqm in the Hanfit area of Thumrait was signed between Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Led by Trufud, the project has an investment value exceeding RO5.3mn. The agreement was signed in the presence of H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, H E Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and officials of Trufud. The project is a unique investment initiative that links agriculture, manufacturing and supply chains, as part of Oman's efforts to promote sustainable agricultural investment and achieve food security. It is expected to yield annual revenues of RO4mn to RO5mn through exports of moringa-based products to markets in North America, Europe and Asia. The project is also expected to generate more than 500 direct job opportunities and additional roles in logistics, packaging and supply services. According to officials, the project will enhance local entrepreneurship and contribute to the economic development of Dhofar. The moringa tree is known for its nutritional and medicinal properties and the project includes facilities for production of oils and powders used in health products. In addition to commercial goals, the project includes environmental benefits. Planting 15mn moringa trees is expected to absorb more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

SALALAH: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, has signed a usufruct contract for a major agricultural investment project in the Wilayat of Thamrait, Dhofar Governorate. The initiative involves the cultivation of Moringa trees over an expansive area of 10.5 million square metres in Hanfit, with a total investment value exceeding RO 5.3 million. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar; Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning; Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; and representatives from Trufud, the company tasked with implementing the project. This large-scale agricultural venture aims to integrate agriculture with processing industries and global supply chains, representing a new direction in sustainable agribusiness development in Oman. It aligns with national efforts to enhance food security while fostering environmentally responsible investments. Expected to yield annual revenues of RO 4 to 5 million through the export of Moringa-based products, the project will target high-demand international markets, including North America, Europe and Asia. In addition to its commercial potential, the initiative will create over 500 direct employment opportunities, along with numerous indirect jobs in supply, packaging and logistics. These prospects are set to stimulate local entrepreneurship and contribute to socio-economic development in the Dhofar Governorate. Environmental sustainability is also at the core of the project, with plans to plant around 15 million Moringa trees. This plantation is projected to absorb more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, significantly supporting Oman's climate mitigation strategies and the goals of Oman Vision 2040. Muscat – Salalah is set to host a major agritourism destination with the launch of Janaen Salalah, an integrated tourism complex (ITC) project blending agriculture, hospitality and recreation in a single development. Led by Omran Group through its subsidiary Agritourism Development Company, the project is located in the Arzat area and aims to position Oman as a regional leader in sustainable agritourism. Janaen Salalah has been granted ITC status by Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, allowing foreign ownership and expanding its appeal to international investors. Spanning over 5.5mn sqm, the project will feature 250 residential units, a 128-key five-star hotel, processing facilities for coconuts and papayas, and areas dedicated to eco-recreation, education and wellness. The project received a boost following a field visit on Tuesday by H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, and H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. The officials reviewed the site's progress, with the visit marked by ceremonial planting of the first coconut trees – a symbolic step towards realising the project's agricultural goals. According to Omran, several key milestones under Phase 1 have been achieved. These include completion of the concept masterplan, feasibility studies confirming the project's viability and appointment of an experienced agriculture contractor. Initial plantation works have already begun.
