The new ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' is fun enough to get its hook into you

If you ranked the most spoofed horror movies of the '90s, I Know What You Did Last Summer would be right up there at the top. The Kevin Williamson-penned screenplay was imitated by The Simpsons, Scary Movie, hell, even Dawson's Creek got a lick in, but its campiness and laughably stale acting instantly made it a cult classic in the slasher canon. What followed were four different instalments and a flop 2021 TV series under the same name, and now, a legacy sequel in the vein of Williamson's Scream franchise revival in 2022. The expectations weren't particularly high when it was announced that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson would be writing a 2025 reinvention of the series. Still, given the director's track record with Gen Z-ready comedies (Do Revenge is an instant-girls-night-in classic), expectations went from nothing to… maybe this could be okay? It's been almost 30 years since the summer of 1997, when a group of four friends accidentally ran a man over, dumped his body, and were subsequently haunted by a blood-thirsty, hook-wielding fisherman. And in a very unfortunate twist of fate, another group of hot young adults find themselves in the same predicament. This time, though, he's levelled up and got himself a harpoon. Another group of hot young adults find themselves haunted by the hook-wielding fisherman Millennial heroes Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt make an enjoyable return, alongside a cast of young Hollywood talent including Outer Banks ', Madelyn Cline, The Studio' s Chase Sui Wonders, and model Gabbriette who makes her acting debut. As with the original, characters are steadily picked off one by one, with the violence escalating to a thrilling climax, of course, on a boat. Sui Wonders plays up to the 'final girl' trope with ease, balancing blood-curdling screams with the kind of feistiness that makes you believe she could probably be the last one standing. But really, nobody's safe here. Swooping in to assist her in tracking down the masked killer, Love Hewitt reprises her role as Julie James, now a band T-shirt-wearing, cool professor of trauma psychology, and Prinze Jr. is a gruff bartender (with a surprisingly great skincare routine), scarred by his past but practical in his advice to the spiralling youngsters. 'Nostalgia's overrated,' Love Hewitt quips in the rushed final third of the film. And while you find yourself rolling your eyes at some of the navel-gazing, I Know What You Did Last Summer still maintains some of its charm. The stabbing, harpooning, slashing, and hanging nod nicely to the 'who's next?' fear of the original, and the fresh crop of youngsters trying to escape the demonic fisherman give the film enough zest that it doesn't feel exhaustingly meta. But maybe we should give the reboots a break for the moment, yeah?

Regina Hall looks back at 'Scary Movie' 25 years later, recalls her favourite scene from the film

It's been 25 years since Scary Movie hit theatres, and Regina Hall's character Brenda Meeks still makes fans laugh with her iconic lines. The actor, now 54, recently hosted a cookout in Los Angeles on June 25 with Bounty, where she talked about the film's lasting popularity and her summer barbecue favourites, according to People magazine. Hall, while speaking to the publication, remembered her experience working with director Keenen Ivory Wayans. "It was a dream to work with him because I learned so much. It's very wonderful that even after 25 years, audiences still resonate and laugh. I think that goes to the genius of Keenen and the Wayans [family]," she said. "They were able to be a part of that genre of filmmaking with parodies that people can still laugh at." Hall fondly remembered her experience working with director Keenen Ivory Wayans. "I'm such a huge fan of his," she told People. "It was a dream to work with him because I learned so much. It's very wonderful that even after 25 years, audiences still resonate and laugh." Scary Movie was released in 2000 and became a box office hit, making over $278 million worldwide. It was known for poking fun at popular horror films like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movie's cast included Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Anna Faris, Carmen Electra, Shannon Elizabeth, and Dave Sheridan. Hall also shared that her favourite scene was when Ray (played by Shawn Wayans) dresses Brenda in a football uniform. Even today, fans approach her quoting memorable lines like, "Out of my face!" and "The TV's leaking!" "Kids quote that one. I'm like, 'Oh my goodness, not the children!'," she said. She also talked about why Brenda is still loved by audiences. "Even if you haven't seen all the original movies that we're spoofing, people of all walks of life and cultures they love it," she said. "That's an honour. People love Brenda."

Freddie Prinze Jr thinks Saw made other horror films seem 'funny'

Freddie Prinze Jr. thinks Saw turned other horror films into comedies. The 49-year-old actor - who will reprise his role as Ray Bronson in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel - has opened up on how James Wan's 2004 horror film changed how fans reacted to the slasher genre after movies like Scream in the 1990s. Speaking to Extra, he recalled: "Every 10 years, horror films kind of evolve, right? "And it happens much more quickly than comedies or dramas or action movies or anything like that. "And we had just come from a time when horror movies weren't really being respected. And it took Wes [Craven] to come in and kind of remind people… 'Look what you can do with a low budget but a great script that's character-driven with wonderful set pieces'... '[After Scream] they started taking swings on other scripts. And they started giving opportunities to other scripts and ideas. 'All of a sudden Saw came out, which makes our movies not scary anymore… and kids are like, 'Well, now I've seen this, so now your movie's funny.' ' A few years before Saw, the Scary Movie franchise launched in 2000 and spoofed other horror films, including the original I Know What You Did Last Summer from 1997. Although Freddie hasn't seen the parody films, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson - the writer and director for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel - is a huge fan. She admitted: "My dream — because they're rebooting Scary Movie — is for them to rip this movie in the new Scary Movie… That would be such an ultimate for me.' The first movie - based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan - hit cinemas in 1997 and was followed by a second installment I Still Know What You Did Last Summer a year later, and I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer in 2006 as well as a 2021 TV series. Now, the franchise is being revived with a new legacy sequel featuring original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr. Director Robinson previously teased the new movie is going to be much more gory than the original. She told PEOPLE: "[The horror elements are] ratcheted up to a hundred in this - it's much more brutal ... "There's definitely more methodology to every kill in this movie, unlike the first, which is kind of just him [the killer] stalking them and going after them. "There's not a lot of gore or blood or violence in the first one. There certainly is in this one." And while old fans can get "excited about the Easter eggs", she wanted the new film to be accessible to newcomers. She added: "[We] approached it like super fans, so I think people are going to be really happy. All the things that you want to see in this movie, you're going to see in this movie ... "We very purposefully wanted to make this movie both for fans of the original who are coming to this and excited about the Easter eggs but also for a new audience that can find I Know and almost watch the first one like a prequel. "That was very front of mind for me as we made this movie. You don't need to do any research coming into I Know What You Did Last Summer. You just have to have a really good time."

Carmen Electra launches new skincare brand

Carmen Electra has launched a new skincare brand. The 53-year-old model and actress - whose GoGo Skincare venture in 2020 didn't go to plan - hasn't been deterred, and she wants greater control this time round with Electra Skincare. She told Women's Wear Daily: "I look at it like a stepping stone and a big learning process." The 'Scary Movie' and 'Baywatch' star is teaming up with Rudy Capital's Rudy Mawer for the new brand. Over the last year, they have been preparing for the three-product line launch, including the Nourishing Cleansing Balm and a Hydrating Face Moisurizer - both $39 - and the $69 Oxygenating Serum. All three are also available together in a bundle for $99. Carmen said: "It evens out your skin tone, and gives you that fresh, dewy look that we all want, whether you're wearing makeup or not. 'But I'm a glam girl. I wanted something to be able to hold makeup, and it does.' The range itself - which was created in an Australian lab - is vegan and cruelty free. For Carmen, it was also important to provide something to help simply people's beauty routines. She added: "It's so I could get out the door faster." Rudy Mawer has high hopes for the range's first year, targeting "over a million dollars" annual online revenue. There are also plans to expand and look into the retail world in the future, while he's delighted to be pairing with Carmen. Mawer said: "Carmen knows the value of high-performance skin care and she wanted a line that reflects her confidence and style. 'We brought that vision to life with clean, science-backed formulas that deliver real, visible result that Carmen and I are very proud of.' Meanwhile, Carmen previously revealed how filming 'Baywatch' by the ocean taught her how vital it is to protect your skin from the damaging rays. She told Page Six Style: 'I love the ocean! The saltwater can be very good for your skin, from exfoliating to tightening pores. 'And always applying SPF to protect my skin was an absolute must [on set].'
