Land identified for setting up maintenance facility for Vande Bharat coaches in Tiruchi
About 30 acres of railway land in Tiruchi has been earmarked for setting up a dedicated facility for the maintenance of Vande Bharat Express trains. The land is near the upcoming Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) shed near Manjathidal railway station. It was identified by the authorities of the Golden Rock Railway Workshop here. Ashish Sharma, Additional Member (Mechanical Engineering), Railway Board, New Delhi, visited the site on Thursday. The Railway Board nominated the Golden Rock Railway Workshop two months ago to undertake SS-I (Shop Schedule) and other major schedules of the Vande Bharat train sets in the place of Perambur Workshop in Chennai. This is a ₹300-crore project. 'If required, more railway land will be utilised,' said the workshop authorities. The workshop has prepared the abstract estimate for the establishment of the new facility and it will be reviewed by the Southern Railway. The estimate includes machinery and plant requirements, civil works, and overhead electrical arrangements required for the maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches, the authorities said. Built during the British era, the Golden Rock Railway Workshop takes up a variety of tasks such as periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, manufacture of wagons and automobile carriers besides undertaking periodic overhauling of steam locomotives operated in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway section. Some technical personnel of the workshop were sent to various railway workshops across the country handling the maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches to gain first hand experience and ascertain the requirements for setting up the facility in Tiruchi. The Vande Bharat trains have strong safety features, including the Kavach safety system, and can run up to a speed of 160 kmph.

Following resignation of Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (retd), President Droupadi Murmu on Monday appointed former deputy chief minister of J&K Kavinder Gupta as new lieutenant governor of union territory of Ladakh. BJP leader and former Jammu and Kashmir deputy CM Kavinder Gupta being offered sweets on being appointed as lieutenant governor of Ladakh, on Monday. (ANI) The strategic Himalayan region shared it's borders with Pakistan and China. Gupta, 65, expressed gratitude to the President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and the party leadership for reposing their faith in him. 'This is a big responsibility entrusted upon me. I will serve the people of Ladakh and try to come up to their expectations,' he told media. 'Ladakh was part of Jammu and Kashmir but there are several challenges after it became a UT,' he said. Gupta, who started off as a RSS worker, assured that he will take local populace along. 'Ladakh is a border region and I will try to shoulder all responsibilities while taking on board the administration and local people,' he said. Gupta informed that on Saturday he received a call from the Prime Minister, who asked him about the new responsibility. 'I gave my consent to the PM,' he said, adding that for the first time anyone from Jammu would be heading Ladakh as LG. In 2014, Gupta was elected as MLA from the Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency. He became the first speaker from BJP in the J&K Assembly, where he served from March 2015 to April 2018. In April 2018, Gupta became deputy CM in the PDP–BJP coalition headed by then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. 'Now, new responsibility has been given to me and I will try to live up to the expectations of the people,' he said. Recalling his earlier days, Gupta said that he had no political background. 'My father was an employee. I remained a student leader and worked for the youth,' he said. The change of guard comes at a time when Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance were spearheading a protracted agitation demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule to the region. Reacting to the development, president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body and former minister, Chering Dorje Lakrook said, 'I personally know him as we worked in the same government. However, people of Ladakh don't know much about him and they asked me about him.' 'Let's see how he runs the administration here. We have to see how he grasped the issues and problems of the people of Ladakh. It will be too early to make a comment,' he said. 3 time mayor, Gupta, joined RSS when he was 13 years old Gupta, born on December 2, 1959, joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at age of 13. He is a graduate and has three children. He served three consecutive terms as mayor from 2005 to 2010. After which he served as an MLA, assembly speaker and former deputy chief minister of J&K. In Punjab also he served as state secretary of ABVP for three years. His father, an employee in the postal and telegraph department, was posted at various places, including Gurdaspur and later Srinagar. A native of Smailpur village in Samba district, Kavinder Gupta officially joined the BJP in 1988. In the 2002 and 2008 Assembly elections, Gupta was initially given the BJP mandate from the Jammu West assembly segment, but the party changed its candidates at the last minute. In the 2014 assembly polls, he was shifted to the Gandhi Nagar assembly segment in Jammu city—then considered a Congress stronghold—where he defeated senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla.

Tejashwi Yadav urges Bihar's youth to give him 20 months to transform the State
Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday (June 26, 2025) appealed to the youth of Bihar to give him 20 months to change the State, as they had given Chief Minister Nitish Kumar 20 years. Addressing the 'Chatra Yuva Sansad' organised by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) at Patna's Bapu Sabhagar, Mr. Yadav made a series of promises to young voters during his hour-long speech. He announced that, if elected, his government would establish a Youth Commission, make forms for competitive examinations free of cost, provide home tutors to academically weaker students, and ensure free transportation to examination centres. 'You gave 20 years to Nitish Kumar, just give me 20 months. The work that was not done in 20 years, I will do it in 20 months,' Mr. Yadav said, addressing a sizeable gathering of student and youth representatives from across the State. He asserted that Bihar's youth would soon change the politics of the State by dislodging the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Pens were distributed to 10,000 participants, with Mr. Yadav emphasising their symbolic significance. 'Their job is not only to change the government but also to change Bihar,' he said. The former Deputy Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to building a new Bihar, citing achievements during his 17-month tenure in the previous government. 'Four and a half lakh employed teachers were given the status of State employees. More than 700 doctors who were absent from duty were sacked,' he said. Criticising the NDA government, Mr. Yadav alleged it was in 'hibernation' and claimed the Chief Minister was 'unconscious.' Referring to the caste-based survey and the reservation ceiling raised to 65%, he said, 'The double engine government did not get it included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, and as a result, the deprived classes are not getting the benefit of increased reservation.' He also announced that his government would establish a world-class university and an education city, promising that no form fees would be charged from aspirants and that travel expenses to examination centres would be borne by the State. Taking note of dropout rates and academic delays, Mr. Yadav said, 'Teachers will go to the homes of students who are weak in science, mathematics and English and give them extra time. We will improve the system in such a way that students from Bihar's universities will once again reach high positions — a process that has been stalled for 20 years.' He added, 'When we come to power, we will never say, 'Was there anything in Bihar before 2025?' Rather, we will take this State to new heights in five years.' Joined by RJD MPs Misa Bharti and Sanjay Yadav, Mr. Yadav described the youth as his 'strength, pride, and accumulated earnings.' However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) dismissed Mr. Yadav's statements as pre-poll rhetoric. 'Tejashwi Yadav is repeatedly making failed attempts to bind the youth in chains of hollow promises. These are not policies, but merely political gimmicks crafted for the election,' said BJP media head Danish Iqbal. JD(U) State spokesperson Manish Yadav termed the speech 'ironic' and a 'mockery of the aspirations of the youth,' citing Mr. Yadav's own academic record, stating he had 'only passed the 9th standard.' Meanwhile, the programme concluded on a chaotic note, as overcrowding led to a stampede-like situation. Several participants fell while exiting the venue, causing damage to the auditorium's glass structure and leaving a few individuals injured.

Seminar in Madikeri Revives Codava Demand for Geo-Political Autonomy, Tribal Status, and Constitutional Recognition
Madikeri: A renewed call for Codava autonomy and tribal recognition resonated from the hills of Kodagu as the Codava National Council (CNC) organised a high-profile seminar near Madikeri, marking 35 years of the organisation's apolitical movement seeking constitutional and cultural safeguards for the Codava people. Delivering the keynote lecture, Supreme Court advocate and constitutional law expert Vikram Hegde underscored the community's long-standing demands, including geo-political autonomy under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Scheduled Tribe status, language inclusion in the Eighth Schedule, and protection of traditional land, cultural, and religious rights. Referring to the Codavas as an 'animistic, mono-ethnic group with deep-rooted ties to their ancestral lands,' Hegde noted that the community met several criteria under both domestic law and international conventions on indigenous peoples, particularly the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). He argued for a 'holistic and historically informed assessment' of the Codavas' demand for Scheduled Tribe classification. CNC President N.U. Nachappa Kodava, who presided over the seminar, reiterated the community's call for a Codava Autonomous Region (CAR) within the Indian Union—akin to the Gorkha Hill Council or the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils. 'Our aspiration is not secession but dignity—through federal accommodation of our unique identity,' Nachappa said. The CNC's multi-pronged demands include: Restoration of hereditary Jamma land rights; Recognition of Codava Thakk as a scheduled language; Protection of customary gun rights, granted under the Indian Arms Act since 1963; Reservation in legislatures akin to arrangements made for cultural minorities in other parts of the country; Exemption of religious and cultural sites from State intervention. Citing the dilution of Codava presence in Parliament since the 1967 election of C.M. Poonacha, the seminar highlighted how Kodagu's merger with Karnataka in 1956 eroded the political representation of the community. Hegde called for serious consideration of Constitutional mechanisms such as inclusion under the Fifth or Sixth Schedule or a new provision like Article 371 tailored for Kodagu. 'Asymmetric federalism is not alien to India—it is the framework by which we have protected many identities. Codavas, with their contributions to national defence and administration, deserve similar recognition,' he said. The seminar also addressed growing concerns over the application of general laws—such as the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions Act and the SARFAESI Act—which threaten to undermine Codava religious freedom and land tenure. Senior Karnataka High Court advocate M.T. Nanaiah, supporting the CNC's legal initiatives, emphasised the community's peaceful advocacy over decades. 'Codavas have not resorted to agitation. They have used democratic and legal means. That alone deserves attention from the Centre,' he said.
