Faridabad woman booked for repeatedly slapping, abusing cook on casteist lines

The Faridabad police Friday booked a woman for allegedly slapping her cook eight times, and verbally abusing her, including hurling casteist insults, earlier this month inside her house. The Faridabad police said a First Information Report (FIR) was registered in the evening last Friday at the Sector 17 Police Station against Deepali Jain for allegedly slapping her cook, Shyama Devi. The FIR invoked Section 3 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 133 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour), 351(3) (criminal intimidation by threatening grievous hurt), and 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Vinod Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Old Faridabad, said Monday, 'The investigation is underway. We do not have any updates at this stage. We will take necessary action after going through the CCTV footage and other evidence.' A spokesperson told The Indian Express Monday that the police have issued a notice to Jain to join the investigation, adding no arrests have been made so far. The incident was captured on CCTV footage, which has since gone viral online, and occurred at around 10.30 am on June 17 in Sector 17. CCTV footage shows Jain coming down a staircase, and slapping Delvi, who was speaking to a family member. Jain slaps her six more times as family members gather. She also attempts to hit Devi with a mop, but discards it after a family member intervenes. Jain then slaps her again before being led away. Devi, who has been working for the family for two-and-a-half years, claimed that Jain assaulted her 'for no reason' after she opened the door for the driver, who had rung the bell repeatedly. She stated in her complaint that her nose started bleeding, her cheeks were swollen, and her head hurt even as she allegedly faced casteist insults. She also alleged prior mistreatment.

Why a proposed Ambedkar statue in Gwalior HC is raising a political storm

A proposed statue of Dalit icon Dr B.R. Ambedkar has become a raging debate in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior, with the Congress joining forces with those in favour of its installation at the high court premises and holding a daylong fast in the city to protest over the installation of the statue has been a point of conflict among the city's lawyers, with one group in support and another opposing it. The issue appears interconnected with the deep caste divisions in the Gwalior-Chambal belt, which also dictates the region's February, a group of lawyers had petitioned with the Gwalior High Court for a statue of Ambedkar to be installed in the premises. The court gave permission, but another group of lawyers protested vehemently. Nevertheless, a platform was created and a statue brought to the high court bench Bhim Sena jumped in, pushing for installation of the statue. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati supported the move. But as differences persisted in the lawyers' fraternity, a clash erupted in May between two groups. The protesting group of lawyers demanded that instead of the statue, the national flag be hoisted from the erected platform. The matter reached the high court again and the registrar reiterated that the statue would be installed. The Opposition Congress has been raising the issue time and again. In May, state Congress president Jitu Patwari wrote to chief justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai for the statue to be installed. And this month, the Congress decided to hold a three-day protest, starting June the first day, a meeting was held in Dalit settlements in Gwalior to raise the issue of delay in installing the statue. On June 24, similar programmes were held across the state. On June 25, a daylong symbolic fast was organised by the party at the Surya Namaskar Square in is pertinent to note that the Gwalior region has been the ground zero of major caste tensions. In 2018, violence between upper castes and Scheduled Castes had left six people dead in Gwalior, Bhind and Morena during a shutdown called to protest against 'dilution' of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) the assembly elections that year, the Congress swept the Gwalior-Chambal region. However, after the exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia to the BJP in 2020, the Congress' seats in Gwalior-Chambal reduced in the legislative Congress has blamed the BJP for not doing enough to get Ambedkar's statue installed. 'The prime minister praises Dr Ambedkar while the home minister has a different view,' said Patwari at a protest meeting in Bhopal on June 24, his reference being to an alleged derogatory remark on Ambedkar in the home minister's statement in Parliament in the past. The BJP, on the other hand, has accused the Congress of paying lip service to the ideals of Ambedkar and questioned its track-record in uplift of to India Today Magazine- Ends

Congress's 3-day campaign for Ambedkar statue in Gwalior, MP chief shares meal with Dalit family

The Congress leaders are scheduled to reach Gwalior the next day and hold a fast demanding installation of the statue. On Tuesday, the second day of the protest, Patwari along with senior Congress leaders including former MLA Sajjan Singh Verma and former minister reached the Buddha Vihar in Bhopal's Panchasheel Nagar and shared a meal with a Dalit family from Buddha Vihar. Bhopal: The controversy surrounding the installation of the Ambedkar statue in Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken a political turn with Congress state chief Jitu Patwari embarking on a three-day 'Samvidhan Satyagrah'. The controversy began in February a group of lawyers had approached the Madhya Pradesh Chief Justice for approval to install the statue at the premises of the court. The proposal was met with opposition from another faction of lawyers, who alleged that the decision to install the statue was taken without consulting the larger bar association of the state and that it lacked basic building permission. In May, arguments broke out with one faction demanding hoisting of the national flag to commemorate Operation Sindoor, while the other seeking the installation of the Ambedkar statue. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati had written to MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in May, urging him to ensure that there is no hiccup in the plan. Earlier this month, the Bhim Army Bharat Ekta Mission, too, had demanded the statue be installed at its designated spot. Patwari, meanwhile, referred to Amit Shah's remark in Parliament that had put the Union Home Minister in a tight spot in December. 'On one hand, the Prime Minister does 'Jai-Jai kaar' (hail) of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and then on the other hand, his Home Minister says, 'Ambedkar-Ambedkar-Ambedkar, itna bhagwaan kaa naam lenge toh bhagwaan mil jaate' (Ambedkar-Ambedkar-Ambedkar, if you take God's name so much, you will meet God'). … But Ambedkar is God for us,' the Congress state chief said in his address to party workers. He then went on to highlight the involvement of BJP workers and leaders at the district- level in atrocities against the Scheduled Castes (SCs). Between 2023 and 2025, Patwari alleged, there was at least 50 cases of murder and rape in which the victime were Dalits. He sought accountability from Mohan Yadav for the 'failure' of the police to protect the SC communities. 'When there is a crime, instead of protecting the victims, the police and the administration get busy in protecting the perpetrators,' he alleged. In response, BJP state president accused his Congress counterpart of indulging in vote bank politics and using the Scheduled Caste community for the purpose. 'What has the Congress party done for Ambedkar, apart from using his name? It was the BJP who honoured Ambedkar's legacy by honouring him with Bharat Ratna posthumously,' he told ThePrint. BBMP zonal commissioners monitor SC survey in city

BENGALURU: As part of the comprehensive survey of Scheduled Castes (SC), the BBMP teams are visiting households across all eight zones in the city, affixing verification stickers. This survey aims to collect scientific data on the representation of 101 communities listed under the Scheduled Castes. The deadline for completion of the survey has been extended to June 30. To confirm participation in the survey, BBMP teams are actively involved in affixing stickers at the entrances of households. As teams visit each household, they ensure the survey has been completed and then place a sticker on the front door or wall of the residence to indicate participation. Zonal Commissioners and Joint Commissioners are visiting homes to monitor and supervise the process. So far, the BBMP has surveyed approximately 1.84 lakh SC households and 32 lakh general households through a workforce of nearly 11,000 enumerators. As a result, 6.72 lakh individuals belonging to Scheduled Castes have been identified. BBMP has appealed to those who have not yet participated to do so promptly. At Mahadevapura, the largest Zone, Joint Commissioner K Dakshayini visited houses and pasted the stickers. 'We paste stickers if the respondents say they belong to the SC communities and have been enumerated. In cases if the houses belonging to SC communities have been left out, the officials include the details in the mobile application of the social welfare department,' said Dakshayini.
