‘Last Supper' sculpture dedicated to local church

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — You can find works of sculptor Timothy Schmaltz all around downtown Youngstown. Wednesday, a new one was dedicated on the property of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Schmaltz's newest sculpture is a depiction of the 'Last Supper.' It sits behind the Basilica at the corner of Watt and East Wood Streets. Bishop David Bonner presided over the dedication attended by 80 people under a tent in the pouring rain. Noticably missing on the sculpture are the 12 apostles — though 12 seats surround the table. Smaltz said that was intentional. 'Showing that we have to become involved in our lives, in our spirituality. We can't just sit back and be passive observers,' Schmaltz said. Schmaltz lives in the Toronto area of Canada and said what he loves about public artwork like the 'Last Supper' is that it's always out there sending a message and is always turned on, so to speak. Bill would rename a portion of US-127 after Jackson Tuskegee Airman

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A in the Michigan House of Representatives would rename a section of highway in Jackson County after a missing Tuskegee Airman who grew up in the city of Jackson. Under the proposed bill, the section of U.S.-127 between mile markers 39 and 40 near the I-94 interchange would be named after 2nd. Lieutenant Roosevelt Stiger, a Tuskegee Airman and Purple Heart recipient who remains unaccounted for. 'It is a real privilege to advocate on behalf of a true American hero,' said State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, who represents Jackson County and introduced the bill. '2nd Lt. Stiger served our country with courage, broke barriers, and gave his life fighting for freedom. This memorial is a small but meaningful way we can ensure his legacy lives on in the community he once called home.' Schmaltz says Stiger was born in Tennessee in 1919 and moved to Jackson with his family during his childhood. He trained as a pilot through the Tuskegee Aviation Cadet program. He graduated in 1944 and was the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces. According to the , on Oct. 7, 1944, Stiger was piloting one of 68 fighters on a bomber escort mission over the Adriatic Sea. Around 10 minutes before reaching land, Stiger reported his oxygen was low, and he and his flight leader flew down to a lower altitude, almost colliding due to low visibility. When Stiger appeared to be heading into the water, his flight lead ordered him to pull up. Within seconds of the two planes becoming level with each other, Stiger's plane went into a steep dive and crashed into the water. After the crash, the flight leader attempted to radio Stiger while circling the crash location, but could not contact him. He was not recovered, and remains unaccounted for, memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy. Schmaltz says the road dedication proposal has seen strong local support, and specifically credited student researchers from the Heritage Center at Jackson College for bringing attention to Stiger's story. 'These students have shown remarkable initiative and respect for our shared history,' Schmaltz said. 'Their work has helped shine a light on a Jackson native who made the ultimate sacrifice. It's because of their efforts that this legislation has taken shape, and I'm incredibly grateful.' HB-4145 was approved by committee and has advanced to the full House for consideration. Michigan House approves Republicans' tax cut, pulling votes from seven Democrats

Michigan Capitol | Susan J. Demas Members of the Michigan House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a 0.2% reduction to the state income tax rate, as Republicans continue to blame Democrats for increased rates in 2024. In 2023, Michigan Treasurer Rachel Eubanks announced the state's income tax rate would fall from 4.25% to 4.05% due to a 2015 law signed by GOP former Gov. Rick Snyder which reduces the income tax rate when revenues outpace inflation, though Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel determined the reduction would only apply for the 2023 tax year, drawing the ire of Republicans. While the Michigan Court of Appeals rejected arguments from Republicans and the free-market Mackinac Center for Public Policy that the cut should have been permanent, Snyder told the Advance in October that was the policy's original intent. 'They said it wasn't permanent, and believe me, it was intended to be permanent. I was there. I did the spreadsheet that made the calculation to do it,' Snyder said. The House voted 65-43 to reduce the income tax rate, with full support from House Republicans. The bill also received support from seven Democrats; Reps. Kelly Breen (D-Novi), John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming), Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens), Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Twp.), Angela Witwer (D-Delta Twp.) and Mai Xiong (D-Warren). State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson) who sponsored the bill said it would allow Michiganders to hold onto more than $700 million in income each year. 'Families across Michigan are struggling to afford basic necessities — groceries, gas, housing, and child care costs are stretching budgets thinner than ever,' Schmaltz said in a statement. 'People need relief, and they need it now. With the state collecting more than enough tax revenue, it's time to give money back to the hardworking families who earned it.' However some Democrats argued the cut would have a minimal effect on the Michiganders who need it the most 'This bill is a wolf in sheep's clothing, the wolf being the wealthy receiving yet another tax cut,' said. Rep. Morgan Foreman (D-Pittsfield Twp.) 'Almost 64% of the tax cuts for this legislation would go to the wealthiest 20%. This bill does not provide breathing room for hard working Michiganders.…The average amount back for those who make less than $27,000 per year would be an average of $11. $11 can't even buy baby formula. It doesn't make a dent when it comes to the rising prices and helping people make ends meet,' Foreman said. Schmaltz's House Bill 4170 faces an uncertain future as it heads to the Democratic-led Senate for further consideration. 'Our caucus is focused on lowering costs and supporting Michigan's middle class families — I'm not sure this is the strongest way to do that,' Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) told the Advance on Wednesday.
