New York Giants' Jameis Winston named a trade candidate

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was given a mandate by management this offseason to solve the quarterback dilemma. The Giants have been one of the NFL's weakest offensive teams the past two seasons, mainly due to poor play under center. Schoen got to work quickly and decided to throw a lot of resources Gone are the likes of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tim Boyle, replaced by veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart. The moves have been well-received thus far, leading to the question: Did Schoen do too much? Wilson is the starter and Dart the future. Where does that leave Winston? In a recent piece for Pro Football Focus, Bradley Locker identified Winston as a possible trade candidate. After spending the start of his NFL career as the Buccaneers' primary signal-caller, Winston is deep into his second act as a journeyman backup. That road may include another stop soon. While with the Browns in 2024, Winston tallied a 69.5 PFF passing grade with 11 big-time throws and 18 turnover-worthy plays. The 31-year-old displayed that he's still capable of slinging the ball at a high level in spurts, producing 82.0-plus PFF passing grades against the Steelers and Bengals last year. The Giants are likely to start either Russell Wilson or first-round pick Jaxson Dart, leaving Winston as the team's presumptive QB3. New York could keep the former first overall pick in that role, but Winston figures to be most teams' top trade target when a quarterback injury inevitably happens. The reason Schoen went full overkill on the quarterback situation is that the Giants have had an unusually high number of injuries at the position over the past two seasons. He wants to make sure he never runs into that issue again. The Giants still have Tommy DeVito under contract and are surely not going to carry four quarterbacks. Winston is signed for two seasons at $4 million per. As stated, he would be an attractive option for a team looking for an experienced starter due to a sudden injury, but probably not someone the Giants will move.

New York Giants' Joe Schoen already gearing up for cutdown day

Training camps around the NFL opened this week, and the clock is ticking for many hopefuls attempting to catch on with one of the 32 teams. Teams are mandated to reduce their rosters from 90 players to 53 by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 26. Needless to say, there's a lot of work to be done by the front office and personnel people between now and then. During his media session on Tuesday, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen outlined what his team will be doing for the next month. "Once the preseason starts and there's other games again, there's going to be roughly 1,200 to 1,300 players cut that Labor Day weekend," Schoen told reporters. "So the pro staff does a fabulous job, led by Chris Rossetti, Brandon Brown, Tim McDonnell, Dennis Hickey, and they do a great job canvassing the entire league, and we divvy up the league, and they're in charge of teams as if they're the GMs of the team. So whether it's trade candidates, whether it's cap casualties, injuries that you're talking about, we will track all that stuff." Schoen is never done forming his roster. Final cuts mean very little to him. He's made plenty of pickups, adjustments, and changes after cutting his roster down to 53. "From a roster procurement standpoint, we're third in the claiming order, so this will be a big preseason for us in terms of when players are released during that time. If the first two teams don't claim a player, now it comes to us, and we've had some success claiming some players since we've been here at the, we call it the second draft, that time of year. It's a busy time of year," he said. "It's a lot of players to work through, a lot of film to watch. We will evaluate that, and then, as Dabs was just talking about, there are injuries, and the roster may look different a week from now just because of injuries. And we made a transaction yesterday with bringing in K'Von Wallace. There are injuries, you're trying to keep everybody fresh, so you need everybody out there on the field to take the reps. "We've got an emergency list that's ready to go if a player gets hurt at a certain position. We have workouts during this time; it's a busy time of year, but it's fun, it's great. We're glad to be back to work and excited for the season." The NFL never stops, it seems. After the claiming period, the front office will be working on forming the practice squad, which can be as large as 16 players.

Schoen, Bryant miss practice following bye week for Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back from their second bye week of the season, but receiver Dalton Schoen and offensive lineman Stanley Bryant both missed a second straight day of practice with injuries. According to the official injury report, Schoen has another knee injury and Bryant is dealing with a sore ankle as the team prepares for Friday's rematch against the Calgary Stampeders who now lead the West Division with a 4-1 record. While one would think Schoen's injury would finally open the door for free agent acquisition Dillon Mitchell to make his long-awaited Bombers' regular season debut, it appears the club is leaning towards Kody Case instead. Case ran with the first team offence in place of Schoen in Monday's practice. Case is in his second season with the club and had just one catch in three games as a rookie while also handling some returner duties. He started the 2025 season on the Bombers practice roster. 'So, that would require moving a couple pieces to fit one in. But he is a more of an on-the-ball receiver. Doesn't mean he can't waggle. Doesn't mean he can't do that, but all of our guys, especially if you're in the slot, if you're in a waggle position, you got to know all the positions, right, to move around. It's a little more challenging for sure. 'Dillon Mitchell is a very good football player. You know a little bit behind when it came through training camp in terms of some fitness. But he's back in good shape. He's moving around well. And we got some very talented depth.' With Bryant's status in question, American Micah Vanterpool was occupying his spot at the left tackle position in practice. Gabe Wallace was with the number one offence at left guard after backing up Vanterpool last game. The loss of Bryant would be significant, but last season's starting right tackle Eric Lofton returned to practice this week after missing the first four games with a knee injury he suffered early in training camp. 'That's one of things we have always liked about our team is the depth,' O'Shea told reporters after Monday's practice. 'And the options we have when we need to make a change because of a possible injury situation that necessitates a change. But yeah, they both can play. Eric obviously has a ton of experience.' Story continues below advertisement Lofton appeared in all 18 regular season games with the Bombers last season. Running backs Peyton Logan (thigh) and Michael Chris-Ike (knee) along with long snapper Mike Benson (hip) also missed Monday's session. The Bombers host the Stamps on Friday starting at 7:30 p.m. at Princess Auto Stadium.

‘We've got a lot of choices we can make'

Depending on which lens you were looking through, Dalton Schoen standing in street clothes during Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice on Sunday could've been a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand, sitting for the first session after a bye week would typically indicate his injury is more serious than the other bumps and bruises that accumulate during a season. On the other hand, it opens up a world of hope for Bombers fans that he avoided the worst. The star receiver exited Winnipeg's Week 5 loss against the Calgary Stampeders in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a non-contact injury to his left knee. An ordinary play saw Schoen leap off his left foot to catch a pass and land on his right foot momentarily before his momentum took him to the turf. Ethan Cairns / THE CANADIAN PRESS Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Dalton Schoen has 17 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown this season. The one note of optimism at the time was that he walked off the field under his own power, but that didn't rule out the possibility of an injury that could cost him multiple games. Schoen took part in warm-ups but gingerly walked around the field, favouring his left leg for the rest of practice. 'I'm not concerned,' said head coach Mike O'Shea, who tends to keep his true feelings about an injured player under wraps. 'It's football. We'll see. We'll give him every opportunity and see.' Schoen, who has appeared in all four games, has 17 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown this season. The 28-year-old missed most of last season with a torn ACL. When Schoen exited the game, the optics of the aftermath on the sideline weren't promising. There was concerning body language from some teammates, including receiver Nic Demski, who embraced his running mate and quietly shared a few words with Schoen. 'We exchanged some words,' said Demski, who couldn't remember all the details of that moment. 'We always just try to keep a high, positive mindset around here, so probably put out a prayer, but at the end of the day, it's just two buddies being positive.' Second-year receiver Kody Case ran with the first team offence in Schoen's place. Rookie pass-catcher Joey Corcoran also saw a few snaps with the top unit. The 26-year-old Case, who has one catch for five yards in his professional career, was the Bombers' primary returner for three games last season before spending the rest of the year on the practice roster. 'It's great anytime you're on a football field, you just feel at home. So just ready to get back out there, if that's what's gonna happen,' he said. Case is currently on the practice roster, meaning a spot would need to open up on the active roster for him to play against the Stampeders at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday (7:30 p.m.). While Case got some runs, perhaps the more notable takeaway was who wasn't on the field with the top offence. Veteran American receiver Dillon Mitchell remained with the scout team, as his tumultuous stint with the Bombers continued. The 28-year-old was the club's prized free-agent signing during the off-season, but a disappointing training camp pushed him down the depth chart, and he has yet to suit up for a regular-season contest. 'Everybody's an option. We've got a lot of choices we can make, and where a guy runs on Day 1, I don't think is a real indicator of everything that goes on.'– Blue Bomber head coach Mike O'Shea One reason Mitchell might not get a serious look is that he profiles as a perimeter weapon rather than a slot receiver. The 6-1, 185-pounder primarily lined up out wide to the weak side of the formation during his three seasons with the Edmonton Elks, so reclaiming that position would mean Keric Wheatfall or Kevens Clercius comes out of the lineup. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. On the other hand, Mitchell was paid like a premier weapon (around $155,000), so thrusting him into the lineup shouldn't depend on the position. 'Everybody's an option,' said O'Shea. 'We've got a lot of choices we can make, and where a guy runs on Day 1, I don't think is a real indicator of everything that goes on. 'Kody Case, if you watched training camp, had an excellent camp and unfortunately got nicked up. We liked him as a returner. As a receiver, he came in and showed that he put the work in in the off-season and was really comfortable with the playbook. I mean, all these things add up to him taking some reps today, too.' Offensive line named New York Giants' biggest remaining need

Since Joe Schoen took over the reins as the New York Giants' general manager in January of 2022, his main focus has been on fixing and building the offensive line. Four drafts and free agency periods later, he's still far from done. Schoen has used high draft picks and spent a boatload of money on the unit, but it is still lacking. In a recent evaluation by Josh Edwards of CBS Sports, identifying each team's largest remaining need heading into the 2025 NFL season, the offensive line was at the top of the list for the Giants. Time will tell if New York made the correct decision to trade up for Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, but to its credit, the team had a conviction and made the move up the board. As far as the offensive line is concerned, who is a part of the long-term vision aside from Andrew Thomas and, perhaps, John Michael Schmitz? The group should be better when completely healthy, but the sample size has not been large enough to prove that theory. Linebacker and cornerback come to mind next. Schoen has had a flurry of misfires and bad luck in his efforts to improve the line, the biggest being the selection of Alabama tackle Evan Neal with the seventh overall pick in 2022. Neal has been a bust thus far, and the team has decided to try him at guard. Injuries have befallen All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas even since signing a five-year, $117 million deal before the 2023 season. Thomas has missed 18 games over the past two seasons, sending the Giants' line into disarray. It is still not known if he'll be ready for the regular season this fall. The selection of center John Michael Schmitz has also not worked out as hoped. He has been average at best. The Giants thought he'd be better; a player who would anchor their line for 8-10 years. He hasn't gotten there yet. The line has some veteran free agents, such as Jermaine Eluemunor, Jon Runyan Jr., and Greg Van Roten, holding it together for the moment, but they are far from where Schoen had hoped they'd be at this point.
