The founder of Alamo Drafthouse is debuting a swanky new movie theater in Chelsea

How to get Tim League, the founder of the famously strict Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chains, to allow phones and chatter during a screening? Metro Private Cinema, his upcoming venture in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, is the unique, if pricey, solution. Opening sometime this summer (late August or early September is the current target), the 20-screen complex will allow cinephiles to rent plush screening rooms for groups of four to 20 people. Each four-hour booking includes a pre-movie dinner and your pick of flick. Recent releases are prioritized, with a rotating selection of classics (all-timers like Jaws and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and off-beat ones, like Donnie Darko and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, are first on the slate) available. Want to screen an even deeper cut? Metro will find it for you, for an extra fee. Speaking of fees, experiences range from $200, for the smallest room, to $1,000 for the 20-count. Meals are $100 per person with alcoholic drinks upping the bill an extra $50 or more. But League maintains this is a way to eventize moviegoing at a time when the practice is in peril of disappearing, and when social media is filled with complaints about bad behavior, service and quality at most multiplexes. On par with Alamo's creative upscale cuisine, menus will be seasonal, and some films will get their unique culinary adventures. (Look out for special Paddington 2 and Goodfellas menus, and Les Blank's 1980 documentary, Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers, will have a particularly pungent pairing.) And, from the looks of the theater's website, rooms will have vibe-setting features like vinyl record players and a variety of seating options, for those who prefer a spine-correcting stool over a comfy couch. Stationed near many of New York's most accessible subway lines, this first iteration will serve as a pilot for future Metro Private Cinemas.

The Running Man Trailer: Glen Powell Stars in Sci-Fi Movie

The first official trailer is here, previewing director Edgar Wright's remake of the iconic 1987 film. 'In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben's defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall,' says the synopsis. The trailer highlights Wright's remake, which is led by Glen Powell. In it, he's participating in a real-life survival reality program, trying to win money while being hunted down by a team of elite hitmen. The Running Man is set to be released in United States theaters on November 21, 2025. Check out the trailer below (watch other trailers): The Running Man remake will be led by star Glen Powell, with other cast members including Josh Brolin, Michael Cera, Colman Domingo, Katy O'Brian, Lee Pace, William H. Macy, Sean Hayes, and more. The Running Man, which is based on a novel by Stephen King, takes place in a dystopian America in 2025. The story revolves around a man named Ben Richards who competes in a deadly reality show to win enough money to help heal his daughter. Powell is playing Richards, while Brolin is believed to be playing the person behind the reality show. A 1987 adaptation of the novel was directed by Paul Michael Glaser, and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, and Richard Dawson. The script for the movie was co-written by Wright — known for making movies such as 2004's Shaun of the Dead, 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 2017's Baby Driver, and more — and Michael Bacall. Wright produces the movie alongside Nira Park and Simon Kinberg. Originally reported by Anthony Nash at ComingSoon.

Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' trailer puts Glen Powell on the run

Edgar Wright is back with a vengeance in the first official trailer for The Running Man, his bold reimagining of the Stephen King dystopian novel. Scheduled to hit theatres on November 7, 2025, the film stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a man thrust into a deadly TV game show to secure funding for his sick daughter. Unlike the 1987 version, this adaptation hews closely to King's original story. Set in a grim near-future, the plot centres on contestants hunted for 30 days by paid assassins as millions watch. Desperate, Richards steps into the arena, becoming an unexpected symbol of resistance. Powell brings intensity to the role, reportedly pushing himself in physically demanding stunts, including explosions and jet-engine roar scenes, a process he described as the hardest of his career. His performance earned high praise, especially with Wright and his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World collaborator Michael Bacall handling the script. Joining Powell is a powerhouse ensemble: Josh Brolin plays ruthless producer Dan Killian, Colman Domingo hosts the deadly show, and other competitors include Katy O'Brian and Daniel Ezra. The cast is rounded out by Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Jayme Lawson, William H. Macy, and Sean Hayes. Wright's signature style is on full display in the trailer, seamlessly blending dark humour, kinetic action, and social satire echoing his work in Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver. Cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, fresh off Last Night in Soho, captures the high-adrenaline sequences with sharp precision. Powell even secured Arnold Schwarzenegger's blessing for the role, reaching out through Schwarzenegger's son Patrick, earning praise from the original 1987 'Runner' himself. With its high stakes, physical thrills, and biting commentary on televised violence, The Running Man promises to be one of 2025's most provocative action hits. Fans eager for a fresh yet faithful take on King's classic have plenty to look forward to this fall.

Weezer's first show was opening for Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar. Now the John Wick star is set to play a villain in the Buddy Holly hitmakers' forthcoming mockumentary

The lovable alt-rock rogues in Weezer used their recent Coachella show to announce to the world that a Weezer movie was in the works – and now, completing what might be one of rock n' roll's wildest full circle moments, Keanu Reeves has been cast as the film's villain. Details about the feature length film have been few and far between so far, with the band's ever-charming frontman Rivers Cuomo simply stating the band were working on a 'Weezer movie back in L.A.' However, a report from film insider Jeff Sneider has since surfaced with more details. A la This Is Spinal Tap, which is set for a sequel later this year, the film is set to be a mockumentary. It's also been described as a cross between cult classic rock flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Weird Al Yankovic biopic, Weird. As for the barmy full-circle moment Reeves' casting creates, it can be traced right back to the beginning of the band's journeyman career. Weezer's first-ever show saw them supporting bassist Reeves' power trio Dogstar way back in 1992. Over 30 years later, the tables turned when the reformed Dogstar opened for Weezer in 2024, when Cuomo and co celebrated the 20th anniversary of their self-titled LP, also known as the Blue Album. Weezer also featured on the soundtrack to the third Bill & Ted film, which stars Reeves and counts Mastodon and Lamb of God among those who contributed to the film's aural drama. Reeves even confessed to having jams on set with his co-star Alex Winter, who plays Bill. The three-decade spanning 'rivalry' between the two bands is believed to form a key part of the plot, with the band set to star on the silver screen alongside Reeves, and other musically inclined actors like Juliette Lewis, and Eric Andre, as well as Jackass star Johnny Knoxville. It will be co-directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and David Leitch has been tapped up as the film's producer. As per website Vinyl Me Please, band historian and unofficial member Karl Koch is also playing a key role in production. He recently organized a private merch signing event from which genuine fan interactions may be weaved into the film's narrative. After getting his old band back together, Reeves linked up with Fender for a stunning custom Precision bass loaded with a one-of-a-kind wiring feature that Fender chiefs couldn't believe hadn't been thought of before. Discussing his love for the low-end with Guitar World last year, he said, 'Whenever I would listen to music, I was attracted to the bass and lower registers. I loved the physicality of the bass, the weight, the strings. And just trying to sit in with the drums and guitar.' There is no slated release date for the film at the time of writing, but when it's out, you can bet Guitar World will be first in line.

Images show stunt academy plan for Victorian site

Artist's impressions show what a stunt training and film facility proposed for a Victorian foundry could look like. Damien Walters, whose film credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and Kingsman: The Secret Service, is behind a full planning application for a permanent film and stunt academy in Derby. The derelict Aida Bliss factory in City Road would also become a new home for Derby City Gymnastics Club should the scheme be approved by city council planners. In application documents, Sigma Architects, which has drawn up the plans, said: "The large open spaces within the foundry provide the perfect setting for building film sets and testing stunt scenes." Damien Walters Ltd bought the 80,000 sq. ft site from Derby City Council in 2023. The site has previously been used as a location for stunt work. The firm wants to transform the former ironworks, which has stood empty for more than 20 years and suffered from vandalism and fire damage, in three phases. The first phase of work, if given the go-ahead, would see the newer warehouse converted into a gymnasium, including a large gym space, performance studios and a cafe. This would provide a new home for the Derby City Gymnastics Club, whose current base at Lancaster Sports Centre within the Chapel Street multi-storey car park is set to be demolished. The foundry conversion would follow to create set areas for filming, stunt work and acting. Sigma Architects said this will add a "high-profile opportunity" for Derby to become "a hub for film-making and gymnastics". A gym and rehab facility in the foundry buildings for athletes and actors, including a small swimming pool, would follow as phase three. The documents describe the site as "a heritage asset" and state the external appearance of the building would "largely be unaltered" by the conversion. Sigma Architects added in a statement: "The proposals can breathe new life into the building in order to retain the history and heritage of the industrial era of the city." Mr Walters, whose film credits also includes Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, said the aim was to complete phase one of the project in the first half of 2026, and added: "We are thrilled to have reached this milestone and to be moving forward with our full vision for the site." Russell Rigby of Rigby & Co, advisors for Damien Walters Ltd, said: "This project will bring a long-term redundant space back to life, benefitting the local community, and playing a significant role diversifying Derby's economy going forward." Derby City Council will consider the application in due course. Follow BBC Derby on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Send your story ideas to eastmidsnews@ or via WhatsApp on 0808 100 2210.
