Prankster wins the lottery. Wife tells him to take out the garbage

Eugene Brown of Menifee is known as a prankster. He once told his wife that one of her favorite singers had died so he could record her reaction. So you can understand why she might not believe him when he showed her his $5 million lottery ticket. She's also a teacher, hence the low tolerance for nonsense. He eventually convinced her that it wasn't a gag —the family had really become one of California's latest lottery millionaires. Brown bought the winning ticket when he was recently out with their toddler so his wife could take a little breather. The pair headed out for breakfast and a walk, according to California Lottery officials. The ARCO ampm in Menifee, at Newport and Menifee roads, is a regular stop for Brown, who picks up Scratchers there. On this day, Dad and the tyke stopped together and he bought a ticket. 'If she hadn't asked me to go out, I might not have gone to the store,' Brown said. 'Somebody else would've gotten that ticket. But everything lined up in the universe.' When the pair got home from their amble, Brown scratched his tickets. He won $75! Then he won what he thought was $5,000. But he wasn't sure, so he showed his Maximum Millions ticket to his wife. She told him it was $5 million. Then, sure it was a prank, he said, she asked him calmly to take out the garbage. It took some convincing, but Brown persuaded his wife they were a few million dollars richer. He told lottery officials he planned to pay off his house then put the rest into a trust. Winning a big prize in the lottery is extremely rare. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292 million; Mega Millions, about 1 in 290.4 million; SuperLotto Plus, 1 in 41.4 million. Scrachers odds vary depending on the game, according to the California Lottery, with the odds of winning any sort of prize across all Scratchers at about 1 in 5. Southern California has been on a roll with — again, exceedingly rare — jackpot prize winners. Two of the four Powerball jackpot winners in 2025 were from SoCal, with a winner picking up $204.5 million at an Arleta 7-Eleven in early June and a $515 million Powerball ticket sold in Anaheim.

San Francisco man wins $2 million on Lottery Scratchers ticket

A San Francisco man won $2 million on a California Lottery Scratchers ticket purchased at a downtown convenience store, lottery officials announced Tuesday. Rwhi Zeidan bought the Instant Prize Crossword ticket from Discount Cigarettes and Cigars, located at the corner of Kearny and Commercial streets. He said he was scratching the ticket to pass the time on March 5 when he realized he had won the top prize. 'I didn't read the number correctly. Twice, I read it was $2,000. Maybe the third time I read it, I found too many zeros, so I counted them one by one,' Zeidan said in a statement. 'That's when I got really shocked.' The ticket revealed a $2 million prize. Zeidan said he texted his children to share the news. 'They said, 'Who was that, you?' and I said yes,' he said. 'Until that moment, it was hard to believe.' Zeidan said he plans to use the winnings to pay off his home. The California Lottery announced several recent winners this week, including a $1 million Scratchers winner in the city of Winters. McKinley Nelson claimed the prize after purchasing a Loteria Grande ticket while picking up pizza with his wife. Nelson, a 72-year-old retired veteran, also plans to pay off his home and buy a camper van. He said he had been playing since the California Lottery started 40 years ago this year. 'It took a long time to win,' Nelson said.

Winning $15 million lottery scratcher sold in Los Angeles

A California Lottery player has become the first top-prize winner of the state's 40th anniversary-themed Scratchers game, taking home a staggering $15 million. Israel Martin Rodriguez scored the jackpot with a 40 Years of Play! Scratchers ticket purchased at a 7-Eleven on the corner of Oxnard Street and Woodman Avenue in Van Nuys. The winning scratcher, which was purchased in February, also netted the store a $75,000 bonus for selling the ticket. California Lottery official Nancy Weimer presented a celebratory poster to 7-Eleven franchisee Karam Singh and store employee Massi Singh earlier this year. The special edition scratcher game was launched on Jan. 20 to commemorate four decades since voters created the California Lottery in 1985. The $40 ticket features prizes ranging from $40 to $15 million, with overall odds of winning better than 1 in 3, California Lottery officials said. Only five top prizes are available, and just two have been claimed so far. The winner and selling location of the other jackpot winner have yet to be announced. The California Lottery said that information will be released 'soon.' Players interested in playing the 40th anniversary-themed game but who don't want to spend $40 can opt for a $2 version, which offers a top prize of $40,000. Other recent winners during the Lottery's anniversary year include Margarito Gonzales Cortes, who won $1 million with a Triple Red 777 ticket in San Jose; Enrique Baldoni, who claimed $5 million with a Cash King ticket in Seal Beach; and Fidencio Duran Macias, who picked up a $7.5 million prize from a Crossword Extreme ticket in Huntington Beach.
