Calls for 20mph limit on Newhaven road after girl hit by car

Residents have called for a 20mph speed limit and pedestrian crossing on an East Sussex road where a four-year-old girl was hit by a car.A petition calling for improved safety measures on Lewes Road, Newhaven, launched after the child was injured on Monday, has more than 400 was taken by air ambulance to King's College Hospital in London where she Sussex County Council wished the girl a speedy recovery and said it will consider the petition when it is received. James MacCleary, MP for Lewes, said at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday that the girl was recovering well in hospital but that residents living in the area have been "warning how unsafe these roads are" around Seaford and Porritt, who has lived on the 30mph road for 40 years, said: "It's very busy, especially in rush hour times it's a nightmare. There's nowhere to cross."There's been a few accidents on this road. It's just a race track, it's not safe for children or the elderly." Carol White, another resident, said the road was used as a "cut through instead of the A26"."I was walking to my allotment on Sunday and a car was doing 70mph in a 50mph [road] leading into the town," she said. "No-one stops to let pedestrians cross."Mark Bunker, who has lived in the road for two years, said: "It's a very busy road, it's fast. "There's a blind spot at the top which is a high risk [area] for an incident."There was a really sad incident the other day. If there was a measure that could be looked at to reduce the speed, I think that would be a good idea."MacCleary asked Prime Minister Keir Starmer if he would intervene to unblock the funding needed to make the A259 and surrounding areas PM gave his "sympathies" to the family and the added that he had heard "a lot about this road" [the A259] and knew "it needs addressing".

Terminally ill sailor from Sussex completes 2,000 mile voyage

A terminally ill sailor has completed her solo voyage around the British Isles, becoming the first disabled person ever to complete the feat without any Turner, an engineer from Seaford, East Sussex, arrived back at Brighton Marina this afternoon at 12.30 BST, exactly four weeks after setting off on 2 completing the course Ms Turner told BBC South East: "It's been a hell of a journey and I'm just so grateful for everyone because I couldn't have done it alone, it may have been a solo trip, but it's taken a small army."She battled through huge waves, heavy winds and even ran aground in Folkestone, Kent, days before completing her 2,070 mile (3,331km) trip this afternoon. The 26-year-old lives with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a debilitating genetic condition that affects connective tissue, but this did not stop her from raising £45,000 for charity."The best point was rounding the northern most part of Scotland and just screaming out because I didn't think I'd get that far, then it was a bit of a scramble to plot the second leg," She said. Her parents Chris and Carolyn Turner said they were "incredibly proud but very tired".Mr Turner said: "I think the worst part for her was the thunder and lightning, as well as going against the 35 knot (40mph) winds in Scotland and Falmouth."She's pretty much sailed non-stop for four weeks."Ms Turner, a full time wheelchair user, completed the voyage without any support, so had to use her anchors and the Spring tide to get off the rocks in Folkestone on Sunday has been using her 27ft (8m) boat named Fear for the solo, non-stop and unassisted navigation and said the journey was physically exhausting at times, but that it feels "unreal" to have done it. "With a lot of imagination and a rather large army to help and although you might have to do things differently, but if you can dream it, you really can do it," she said. Ms Turner was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which causes fainting and seizures, when she was to complications, doctors have told her that her condition is now originally hoped to complete the trip in four to eight weeks. Ms Turner has raised more than £45,000 for her charity Sailability, which helps people with disabilities access sailing.

WATCH: Seagull cops a falcon in local footy match

In one of the strangest events to be captured on the footy field, a seagull met an unfortunate ending after being hit by a footy. A match between Somerville and Seaford in the Mornington Peninsula Football League came down to the wire, with Sommerville getting up by two points — however the story of the game wasn't the scoreline. The headline of the match came during a Sommerville player's set shot, as he launched the pill from inside 50 towards the goals and struck a seagull that was flying past. The bird immediately dropped out of the sky and hit the deck, but the game didn't stop as players swarmed the ball that was still in play. A Sommerville player was captured picking up the lifeless seagull and carrying it off the pitch, before running back into the game. Vision of the incident was posted to social media by X user Carteagle, noting that it wasn't his footage, with the caption: 'I've seen some stuff in footy, but this is probably up there with the weirdest…' The crowd was stunned by what they had seen. 'That hit a f***ing bird... I got that on video!,' the person behind the camera shouted. 'The bird's dead on the ground,' a bystander can be heard yelling. Viewers were equally shocked by the footage, with many finding humour out of the situation. The bizarre moment was captured on camera as the bird went down during the match. Credit: X / Carteagle 'Surely he's gets another kick for that,' an X user replied. 'Great smother,' another joked. ''On baller' C. Gull will enter HIA protocols,' one person said. A player was captured picking up the lifeless seagull and carrying it off the pitch Credit: X / Carteagle 'Bird sacrificed its life to defend that goal,' a comment on Instagram said. Others condemned the crowd for laughing off the incident. 'Yuk, shows how little empathy they have!,' a viewer wrote. Another said: 'Seriously, couldn't have given the animal a bit more care. That's pathetic.' The video has drawn comparison to times when birds have met fowl endings on the big stage, including Scott Pendlebury bouncing a footy on top of a pigeon in a 2018 AFL match and the iconic moment MLB pitcher Randy Johnson sent a fast ball straight into a oncoming seagull — causing the bird to explode on impact.

The 3 Sussex beaches that are among the UK's best to visit during the summer

With the hot weather arriving in force this weekend, beaches across the country will be full of Brits ready to soak up the sun. Sussex is home to a number of great beaches to visit, with some even being suggested to be among the best in the country. With a heatwave on its way to the South East this weekend, we have picked out three beaches in Sussex that are highly rated. From one with "superb views" to another great for sandcastles, these are worth visiting. In the spring, Condé Nast Traveller revealed 56 of the best beaches in the UK. Among those named on the list were three beaches in Sussex. First was Cuckmere Haven, in Seaford. Cuckmere Haven beach is part of the Seven Sisters area (Image: Tripadvisor) CNT said this beach was "one of the top picks for the best beaches near London". It described it as "one of the wildest beaches on the south coast, with superb views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs". The publisher added: "At low tide, the adventurous can explore the foreshore eastwards all the way to the Birling Gap, or head west for sea caves." This beach has a 4.7/5 rating on Tripadvisor from more than 200 reviews, with one saying: "The cliffs are blindingly white and the beach and surrounding countryside is so pretty". Also making the list was West Wittering beach. This is a hugely popular spot for locals and travellers alike, with CNT saying it "draws a crowd from all over the south coast". It added: "Low tide brings the promise of shallow lagoons to paddle in and creates a blank canvas for sand-castles. "There's a grassy patch ideal for picnics behind the beach huts that fringe the beach." West Wittering is rated 4.1/5 on Tripadvisor, but has received more than 1,400 reviews, proving its popularity. One reviewer said: "Must be one of the best beaches in the south east. Amazing large sandy beach, very dog friendly in the winter months." The final beach making the list was Seven Sisters, which is home to a number of beaches, including Cuckmere Haven, as mentioned previously. Seven Sisters is known for its tough walking routes, providing some of the best views along the coast of the famous white chalk cliffs. There is a beach in front of the cliffs to explore, which is another great option for hikers or day-trippers looking for somewhere to cool off. On Tripadvisor, there are a number of other beaches in Sussex that are also highly rated. In East Sussex, these include Camber Sands, Brighton, Bexhill, Winchelsea and Pevensey Bay. In West Sussex, some of the best beaches include Pagham, Littlehampton, Worthing and Lancing. Camber Sands is regularly recognised as one of, if not the best, beach in Sussex. It has the most reviews on Tripadvisor, with just less than 2,000, still enjoying a 4.3 rating. Lovely dunes that must be protected. Clear water is not too cold. "Plenty of activities and sports. Areas for dogs. Lovely place with both low and high tide." Another said: "It is a golden sand beach when the tide is out. Great for children to build sand castles and great for walking and, at this time of the year, letting your dog run free."
