Sys Group sets sights on €1bn in client assets with two additions

Sys Group, the fast-growing Irish financial services group, has announced the acquisition of two financial planning firms as it sets its sights on having assets of €1 billion under management this year. Founded by Tony Delaney, the Nenagh, Co Tipperary -headquartered group has agreed to add Qifa Financial Planners in Mallow, Co Cork , and Efficient Financial in Arklow, Co Wicklow , to its growing stable of brokerages. Combined, the two transactions will add €126 million to the value of Sys Group's assets under management, which now stand at more than €650 million, the group said in a statement on Monday. Qifa, which was founded in 2006 by managing director Sean Lynch, manages some €76 million of client assets. READ MORE Efficient Financial, meanwhile, was founded in 1976 by Henry Crummy and is now operated by his sons Harry and Derek. The firm manages client assets of €50 million and, like Qifa, provides specialist financial planning, wealth management and other services. Mr Delaney, the chief executive of Sys Group, said the transactions are a 'landmark moment' for the group. 'These acquisitions strengthen our presence in key regional markets and reinforce our ambition to be the leading provider of client-focused financial planning in Ireland,' he said. 'I'm particularly pleased that Sean and Harry will take on senior roles within SYS Financial. Their involvement ensures continuity for clients and adds significant leadership depth to our team.' Mr Lynch said joining the Sys stable will allow Qifa to continue its growth path 'with the backing of an exceptional organisation'. Mr Crummy said the deal will give Efficient Financial access to 'enhanced resources, cutting-edge technology, and broader expertise'. Sys Group has grown rapidly in recent years, acquiring the likes of Cork-based Global Life & Finance last year, which added €100 million to its asset base. The deal was one of four transactions completed by the group last year, which Sys Group said would position it 'as one of the leading Irish financial services businesses'. The group, which Mr Delaney founded in 2015, is aiming to have €1 billion in assets under management by the end of 2025, through further acquisitions. Sys Group employs 67 people across its four offices nationwide.

Indian-origin man sentenced for life in UK for child rape, attempted assault

UK: A 24-year-old Indian origin man has been sentenced for life in the UK following what the Scotland Yard called a 'significant' investigation into an attempted rape and rape of a child in London. The man, Navroop Singh was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years by Isleworth Crown Court on Friday. He was convicted on five charges, including rape, the Metropolitan Police confirmed, reported news agency PTI. Acting Chief Superintendent Sean Lynch of the Metropolitan Police said that officials used a combination of forensics, CCTV and witness accounts to track down Navroop Singh, in order to build a file of evidence against him. The Indian-origin man had previously pleaded guilty to three offences – possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, rape of a girl under 13 and assault of a girl under 13 by penetration, as per news agency reports. Navroop Singh was additionally convicted of the attempted rape of a woman in west London in October 2024 following a four-day trial at Isleworth Crown Court. Police officials began the investigation after a woman in her 20s reported a rape attempt in October 13 last year. Police were alerted by the victim, who, by chance, was met with two off-duty officers near the gates of Southall Park in Ealing, west London, and then accompanied her to the nearest police station. Navroop Singh had been sitting on a bench in Southall Park during the early hours of October 13, deliberately waiting for a potential victim to pass by, according to the Metropolitan Police. He was armed with an imitation firearm — which he had ordered and assembled — and used it to threaten a woman while attempting to rape her. In the days that followed, officers reviewed hours of CCTV footage in an effort to identify the suspect. However, before Singh could be apprehended, a second incident occurred — the rape of a child in another park on October 23, 2024. Investigators quickly identified striking similarities between the two cases and 'immediately made a link between the offences,' the Met Police said. 'Using the increased resources which were made available, officers secured additional forensic evidence. Officers were able to trace the offender to within a few doors of his home address where they delivered leaflets to appeal for witnesses and carried out increased patrols of the area,' the Met Police said. Navroop Singh was arrested on October 27, 2024 with each of the victims supported by specialist officers throughout the investigation and court process.

West Lothian singer's performance of Prince's Purple Rain strikes the right chord in Cyprus

Sean Lynch from Fauldhouse took the You're a Star 2025 title A West Lothian man seems to have hit a purple patch after moving to live on an island in the Mediterranean popular with tourists. Sean Lynch, who is from Fauldhouse, recently hit all the right notes with the judges when he won the You're a Star 2025 competition in Cyprus with an incredible performance in the final of the classic Prince song, Purple Rain. ‌ The 30-year-old was singing in pubs and clubs around West Lothian before moving to Paphos in 2017. ‌ The former pupil at St Kentigern's Academy in Blackburn now resides in Paphos on the island's southwest coast but the final of the competition was in the country's capital, Nicosia. 'I was 22 when I first came over to work in one of the Louis Hotels as singer. I moved back to Scotland in 2018 and then returned to Cyprus in February 2020. 'I love Motown music but when I'm performing I cover everything and anything.' The Lynch family from Fauldhouse was already well-known in and around West Lothian for music, performing, and entertaining. Before moving Sean's jobs in Scotland included working as an assistant events manager for VPZ, before that he worked in Schuh Warehouse at J4 for many years. ‌ 'Sean continued: 'At the weekends I'd be out singing, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I travelled all over Scotland to different venues – pubs, clubs and holiday parks. He now performs at a wide range of events in Cyprus including, corporate functions, private parties, and weddings. The Cyprus-wide competition was organised by New Music School and Recording Studios. ‌ 'I applied online for the You're a Star singing competition and made it into the last 40 contestants,' said Sean. 'I made it to the semi-final and then into the final. 'There were 15 singers in the final and I won. There was a cash prize and also a holiday courtesy of the competition sponsor, SeeYou Travel. ‌ 'I will be going into the studio to record and will be releasing Purple Rain as the 'winners single'. It will be available on all music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music etc. "I'm then hoping to start releasing some of my own stuff too.' Despite enjoying his life in the sun, Sean hasn't forgotten his roots and comes home to Scotland once a year in March for Mother's Day and performs a show at Fauldhouse Miners' Welfare club, which always sells out in advance. ‌ 'I've been performing the show there for a number of years,' said Sean. 'I'll be back for it again next year on Sunday, March 15'.

Dreamtime Ireland review – Blockbuster show tied together by piquant focus on nationhood

Dreamtime Ireland Visual Centre for Contemporary Art, Carlow ★★★★☆ I first encountered Sean Lynch around this time last year, at the Banana Accelerationism exhibition at the Complex gallery in Dublin. A collaboration with Laura Ní Fhlaibhín , that show was notable for the degree of interdependence it fostered. The artists abstained from naming individual pieces, encouraging the visitor to experience the overall composition, much as one would experience instruments in an orchestral score, aware of each player only as part of the symphony as a whole. Lynch's sensitivity to the ensemble-like effects of artworks appears to be an essential characteristic of his artistic vision, evident here in this blockbuster show at Visual Carlow. Curated by Lynch, Dreamtime Ireland features dozens of artworks, ranging across painting, sculpture, film, photography, sound and even video game, and featuring contributions from the 1990s to the present day. What ties this wide diversity of work together is a piquant focus on the political and social articulation of Irish nationhood. Dreamtime, let's not forget, is the name of the well-known collection of mythological, philosophical and historical writings by the mystic John Moriarty, for whom 'dreamtime' was a mode of cultural exploration, a means to heal the culture of our present day, by re-engaging with and interpreting the culture of our past. Dreamtime Ireland. Photograph: Ros Kavanagh In line with this approach, one of the most striking works in the exhibition is John Carson and Conor Kelly's Evening Echoes, from 1993-95. An assemblage of photography, text and, crucially, sound, the work permeates every gallery space in the sprawling exhibition. The artists recorded newspaper vendors on the streets of Ireland and Britain; incomprehensible shouts, trills and cries fill Visual, creating an inchoate auditory patchwork that is somewhere between mating call and human song. READ MORE Beyond its distinctive form, Carson and Kelly's installation has a sociological component, powerfully evoking what is lost in our era of digital media. Raymond Griffin's wooden sculpture Reconstruction of the Christmas Crib at Dublin Airport in 1964 (from 2025) is another reminder of the recent past, though its commentary is more explicitly critical. The work is a faithful refabrication of a Nativity scene created by the artisan Fergus O'Farrell. The scene consists of minimalist shapes: by divesting the characters of their personal, human traits, O'Farrell sought to elicit Catholicism's articles of faith – God, heaven, eternal life, the Messiah, forgiveness and redemption – more directly. Dreamtime Ireland. Photograph: Ros Kavanagh Dreamtime Ireland. Photograph: Ros Kavanagh His effort ran aground when Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, displeased by the abstract forms, ordered its removal. An editorial from the Irish Independent accompanying the piece criticises the 'insufficient qualities' of the Nativity 'to constitute sacred art.' Other notable works that employ a sharp critical lens are Léann Herlihy's autofictional bureaucratic odyssey The Long Internecine Quarrel, Paul Gregg's fascinating Reconnaisance and Delivery (Waterford Parachute Project), which features a curator being grilled on daytime television for her gallery's support of public art, and Namaco's epic DIY video game about the Irish housing crisis, Mega Dreoilín. Dreamtime Ireland is at Visual Carlow until Sunday, August 31st, 2025
