ANZ businesses urged to prioritise AI readiness & strategy

As AI Appreciation Day approaches, industry leaders are reflecting on the remarkable advancements artificial intelligence has made and emphasising the urgent steps required to ensure its responsible, effective integration into business and society. With AI transitioning from experimental stages to become central in strategic planning, experts highlight both the transformative opportunities and the key challenges now facing organisations, particularly in Australia and New Zealand. Jeremy Pell, Area Vice President for ANZ at Elastic, stresses that AI has reached what he describes as a "critical inflection point." "AI has evolved from basic automation to intelligent systems that can connect enterprise applications and workflows," Pell explains. The success of such systems, however, depends on their ability to access structured and unstructured data rapidly and accurately. This evolution, he asserts, is visible in daily life through applications such as Uber's ride-matching and food delivery platforms, which leverage Elastic's Search AI technology to provide faster, more personalised, and context-aware services worldwide. Pell also notes AI's increasingly critical role in cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity teams must leverage generative AI to strengthen defences against threats like deepfakes and phishing," he maintains. Enhanced search powered by AI is enabling organisations to reduce false positives in threat detection, accelerating both the identification and resolution of incidents. This, Pell believes, is shifting the security landscape and offers a major advantage to proactive businesses willing to embrace these tools. As the technology becomes more integrated and influential, Pell points to the growing responsibility that comes with such progress. The Business Council of Australia's AI Agenda, for instance, sets forth ambitious goals to position the country as a global AI leader by 2028, focusing on digital infrastructure, skills, and the safe adoption of AI across industries. While AI's potential to reshape industries and improve quality of life is significant, Pell believes its true value will only be realised on open, adaptive platforms capable of offering real-time, holistic data insights. "At Elastic, we're proud to empower organisations to harness this new era of AI with confidence and agility," he says. A complementary perspective comes from Kumar Mitra, Executive Director, CAP & ANZ, ISG, at Lenovo. Mitra heralds AI Appreciation Day as a "timely reminder that AI is no longer a distant frontier – it's a business-critical priority." Citing Lenovo's CIO Playbook 2025, developed with IDC, Mitra notes that more than 63% of Australian CIOs view aligning AI to business strategy as their top priority. Despite this, he points out, 58% of those surveyed identify data infrastructure as their principal barrier to advancing AI programmes. "It's clear that scaling AI isn't just about capability – it's about readiness," he insists. Lenovo sees the path forward in what Mitra terms "Hybrid AI" – a distributed, flexible approach to running AI workloads wherever they deliver the greatest value, whether in the cloud, on-premises, or at the edge. Such agility addresses both security concerns and varying business needs. "AI done right can drive both economic and human progress," he adds, citing examples from transforming supply chains and accelerating healthcare diagnostics to enabling inclusive solutions for people with disabilities. For Mitra, it is essential for organisations to move beyond small-scale pilots and instead embed AI as a core component of their growth and inclusion strategies, realising its potential for "sustainable growth, inclusion, and real-world impact." Both Pell and Mitra agree that the promise of AI lies not only in innovative applications but in strategic vision and robust infrastructure. As organisations in Australia and around the world mark AI Appreciation Day, the industry emphasis is on collaboration, responsible stewardship, and investment in systems that will enable AI to drive meaningful progress well into the future.

Google Search AI Mode Now Available In India And You Can Try It On Mobile Or Web

Last Updated: Google AI mode for search is now rolling out in India as an experimental feature that you can manually enable from the Google app or website. Google's AI Mode in Search is now rolling out for users in India this week, who can try out the new version of AI-powered Search both on mobile and the web. Search AI is going to be a big part of Google's own push in the arena as it looks to reinvent the Search wheel for many years to come. Search with AI mode has been available in the US since its release at the I/O 2025 in May and now Google is offering it as a part of the Labs catalogue for its users in India. The new AI Mode experiment in Search uses advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities from Gemini to help with even your toughest questions. Google says, you can ask whatever's on your mind and get an AI-powered response with the ability to explore further with follow-up questions and helpful web links. This is where the AI mode differs from the traditional search responses that Google has offered for decades. 'AI Mode does the heavy lifting for you, intelligently organizing information and gives you easy-to-digest breakdowns," the Google blog post shares. You will find the new AI Mode for Search listed in the Google Labs section which you can open by clicking on the Beaker icon on the top-left of the Google mobile app, and top-right if you have Google Search open on the desktop. You are greeted with the 'Meet AI Mode' message at the top of the screen and below that you have the dialog box where you can ask anything. However, there is a reason why Google is offering the AI Mode as an experiment, which means mistakes can happen with the information shared. 'This new mode is rooted in our core quality and safety systems, but it's still an early experiment and may make mistakes. Your feedback will help make it better," Google highlights the early days for this AI search option. In the next few months, Search AI will also be able to read images and content from your phone's camera. Search Live is going to do all that by giving you the usual search results on the screen. You will see a Live icon in the Google app on Android and iOS and by tapping on the icon you can start conversing with Search and the AI-generated model will respond to any of your queries. The new feature is available in AI mode for people in the US and you have to sign up for the Labs program that Google offers for its unreleased tools. First Published: June 24, 2025, 14:31 IST

A subtle UI tweak in Android 16 hints at Google's next big AI push

Google is quietly rolling out two notable design changes as part of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2: a redesigned Pixel Launcher search bar and a new Gemini launch animation. Both features appear to be part of Google's ongoing effort to better integrate AI and streamline the visual experience across Android. The new Pixel Launcher search bar now looks more like the Search widget found in the Google app and Circle to Search. The previous layout, which featured a gradient "G" logo, a voice search mic, and a Google Lens shortcut, has been rearranged. These elements have been shifted to the left side of the bar, making space for a new circular AI Mode button on the right. This updated layout is housed within a pill-shaped container, giving the bar a more modern look. The new Pixel Launcher search bar. | Image credit — PhoneArena Users with Themed icons enabled will see the search bar adapt to Material You's Dynamic Color system, replacing the traditional four Google colors. However, the search bar itself remains static in functionality. In this beta, there is currently no way to remove or customize the color or transparency of the new design. It's important to note that this updated design is currently limited to users in the United States who have access to Google's Search AI Mode. Users outside the U.S. will still see the older, fuller version of the search bar, at least for now. Google is expected to bring the redesign to more regions as AI Mode becomes more widely available. In addition to the search bar changes, Google is also rolling out a new animation when launching Gemini via the power button. When users long-press the power button, the screen shrinks slightly with black borders appearing around the edges, before the Gemini overlay slides up and returns the screen to full size. This animation also brings back vibration feedback, which had been missing in some recent builds. Both the Pixel Launcher redesign and the Gemini animation are being released as server-side updates, meaning availability may vary depending on region, device, and user settings. Google has not yet shared when these changes will reach stable versions of Android. These small but noticeable updates continue to shape how Pixel users interact with AI features on their devices, suggesting more user-facing tweaks could be on the way as Android 16 continues to evolve. It's unclear if these will also show up on non-Pixel Android devices with the Google Search widget and Gemini installed, but it will interesting to see how these play with other Android skins such as OneUI. We will have to wait and see as Android 16 and Material 3 Expressive gets refined further. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
