Indonesian rescuers try to reach Brazilian after fall at volcano
Hikers flock to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, for its stunning panoramic views. (File pic) JAKARTA : Indonesian rescuers tried Tuesday to reach a Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at a volcano popular with hikers after spotting her unmoving body, authorities said. The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbours Bali. Authorities think Marins fell and believe they sighted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather. 'Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location, but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather,' Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok's Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday. 'When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving.' Rescuers said they were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. 'One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool,' said Hariyadi. 'This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched, and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location.' An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers. 'Hang in there, Juliana! Help is on the way!' read a post on the account. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

The Ōpihi River. Photo: Creative Commons Two men were rescued by helicopter after they became stranded on the rooftop of their car in a flooded river in southern Canterbury. The men got stuck in fast flowing water near the fork of the Ōpihi and Temuka rivers at around 9.30pm on Saturday night, a police spokesperson said. "They climbed onto the deck of the vehicle [as it] slowly sank but couldn't swim to safety due to the speed of the water," police said in a statement. "As the vehicle sank to its bonnet, a Search and Rescue team was brought into help, along with a helicopter." The men were stranded for almost two hours when, at 11.20pm, they were finally winched to safety. "They were assessed at Timaru Hospital and later released to their very relieved family," the police spokesperson said. UAE: 4 rescued in Abu Dhabi after jet skis run aground in shallow water
Four people have been rescued after their jet skis ran aground in shallow waters off the coast of Abu Dhabi. When marine vehicles run aground, it means they have hit the seabed, with the vehicle occasionally getting stuck. The National Search and Rescue Centre, in coordination with the Coast Guard of the National Guard, rescued those individuals and transported them to the nearest hospital. The National Guard Command urged all seagoers to ensure their marine vessels are safe and in good working condition, to conduct regular maintenance checks, and to follow safety protocols strictly. It also emphasised the importance of carrying essential rescue equipment and contacting the maritime emergency line (996) in case of any emergencies.

6 dead, 2 missing after boat capsizes on Lake Tahoe
Six people died, two people were hospitalized and two others remain missing after a boat capsized on Lake Tahoe Saturday night. Just before 5 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office received multiple reports of a capsized boat carrying 10 people near D.L. Bliss State Park. The lake was reportedly experiencing large swells and waves were reaching 6 to 8 feet high. Witnesses told South Tahoe Now that around 3 p.m., the winds suddenly picked up, creating dangerous conditions on the waters. Local agencies, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and California State Parks, responded to the lake where witnesses reported seeing a group of people in the water near the overturned vessel. Six people, identified only as adults, were found dead. Two survivors were rescued from the water and transported to a local hospital. Two others remain unaccounted for on Saturday night, Coast Guard officials said. Conditions on the lake were harsh, the Sacramento Bee reported, with 30-knot winds, an air temperature of 38 degrees and a wind chill that was near freezing, according to National Weather Service data. There are reports the boat was a Chris-Craft, but authorities have not confirmed that detail. The circumstances surrounding the deadly incident remain under investigation. No further details, including the victims' names, were released. The sheriff department's Search and Rescue team, along with a Dive Team, will return to the area on Sunday morning to resume search operations. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
