Joy of playing soccer returns for Canada's Jordyn Huitema after harrowing U.S. home invasion

Social Sharing The smile was wiped from Jordyn Huitema's face as quick as the forward's stride on a soccer pitch. She was discussing her and the Canadian national women's team's long-standing rivalry with the United States when a Toronto reporter asked Huitema about being victim to a home invasion last month. With a night off on May 1, the fourth-year member of the National Women's Soccer League's Seattle Reign FC locked all doors of her home in Mercer Island, Wash., at 8:30 p.m. PT and went to bed. Soon, Huitema heard noises downstairs but the home alarm didn't sound. She quickly entered survival mode, grabbing clothes, her phone and barricading herself in the bathroom by hiding in a locked water closet. "But then … there was one person that came into the bathroom with me, and his flashlight was shining, and I could see it going under the door. I knew he was right beside me, and I was just hoping that he didn't touch the door. "That's when I put my hand over my mouth and nose and was just trying to hold in all the tears, trying to hold in all the sounds, just trying to be as quiet as possible." Huitema called 911 and eventually reached a dispatcher, whispering details in a bid to stay hidden. She doesn't know whether the robbers realized she was home but was never spotted. They intruders stole nearly $200,000 US worth of belongings, according to court documents. Weeks later, Huitema and her Canadian teammates are preparing for Friday's Pride Celebration friendly against Costa Rica, a 7:30 p.m. ET start at BMO Field in Toronto. 'It's a journey' Huitema now has more jump in her step. She's having fun hanging out with her teammates on the national squad. And she's excited to play before a home crowd. "A work in progress," is how the 24-year-old Huitema described her return to soccer in a Zoom call this week with Signa Butler of CBC Sports. "It's a journey. I've got my routine back of sleeping and eating; the basics to be a professional [athlete]. "The joy being on the field brings me is something you don't feel anywhere else. I feel like a different person than where I was at [a few weeks ago]." Following the home invasion, Reign head coach Laura Harvey gave Huitema the option to sit out, but she chose to play. "I tried to give everything," the player said, "and that wore me down more without realizing I was slipping away from myself. I was exhausted. "I was struggling so much that when it was time to step on the field my head was in a different world. "I'm very bad at choosing myself in situations where I should," continued Huitema, "but I'm learning." After an "amazing" conversation with Casey Stoney, first-year head coach of Canada's national women's team, Huitema returned to Chilliwack and spent about a week with her parents and siblings. "She agreed I should step away," Huitema said of Stoney, the 42-year-old former England captain hired by Canada Soccer in January. "I never like to wave the white flag and say that I'm down. Had I let [the situation] spiral, it could have turned into something where it needed to be a longer-termed [absence] but all I needed in that moment was a week." These days, Huitema is excited about the number of fresh faces with the national team. In March 2017, she made her debut with the senior club as a 15-year-old in Canada's 1-0 Algarve Cup final loss to Spain in Portugal. She was the third-youngest woman to play for Canada behind only record-holder Kara Lang and Jessie Fleming, who were also 15. "We need to start developing the future of Canada soccer," said the five-foot-10 Huitema, who won 2021 Olympic gold in Tokyo and was a member of last year's team in Paris. "You see yourself in [the younger players]. You can relate to them, so you try to give a helping hand or be supportive to make them feel comfortable." After Friday's friendly, the eighth-ranked Canadians travel to Washington to face the top-ranked U.S. on July 2 at Audi Field. Canada, which hasn't won in America since Nov. 11, 2000, has a 4-53-9 record against the U.S. that dates to 1986 when the Canadian women's program was established. "Yeah, we all hate [the U.S. team]," said Huitema, smiling. "It's the rivalry we have. It's funny because I've been playing with so many of [their players] the last three, four years. I'm close friends with 95 per cent of them. "I'll have brief conversations with them, and they'll say, 'We hate you guys. You're so nice, and we love you as people, but we hate you.' It's probably the most exciting game we get to play. It's the [one] you want to win, for sure."

Ji So-Yun shines in Reign FC rout of Royals

June 22 - Ji So-Yun had one goal and two assists and Emeri Adames scored two second-half goals to help Seattle Reign FC post a 4-1 victory over the Utah Royals on Saturday afternoon at Sandy, Utah. Maddie Dahlien also scored as Seattle (6-4-3, 21 points) stretched its unbeaten streak to three matches (2-0-1). Bianca St-Georges scored on a rebound for last-place Utah (1-10-2, 5 points), which lost its fourth straight match and fell to 0-7-1 over its last eight games. Ji put the Reign on the board in the sixth minute when she sent a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net. Ten minutes later, Dahlien tapped a right-footed shot toward the net that Royals defender Ana Tejada was unable to keep from going in. Utah scored in the 31st minute when Ally Sentnor's right-footed shot from outside the box was partially stopped by Seattle's Claudia Dickey and hit the left goalpost. The unchecked St-George easily knocked it in. Seattle pulled away in the second half as Ji was surrounded by three defenders in the 66th minute and slid a pass to the wide-open Adames, who drilled a left-footed shot into the net. The 19-year-oid Adames added a left-footed penalty-kick goal in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Gotham FC 2, Bay City FC 1 Geyse scored the tiebreaking goal and Esther Gonzalez also found the back of the net as Gotham rallied to knock off Bay City at Harrison, N.J. The go-ahead goal came in the 55th minute after Nealy Martin sent a long pass upfield. Geyse and Gonzalez were both chasing the ball and Geyse got there first and lifted a short right-footer over the hand of Bay City goalkeeper Emmie Allen. The win was the second in a row for Gotham (5-5-3, 18 points). Penelope Hocking scored for Bay City (4-6-3, 15 points), who lost their second straight game. A wide-open Hocking had a chance for her second goal in the 76th minute, but she sent a right-footer just wide left of the net. Hocking's goal in the 11th minute gave Bay City a 1-0 edge. She chased a ball close to the net and tipped it past Gotham goalie Ann-Katrin Berger and then tapped it into the net. Gotham tied the score in the 30th minute after Sarah Schupansky stole the ball inside the Bay City box. She immediately fed Gonzalez, who sent a right-footed shot past Allen. Gonzalez extended her NWSL goal-scoring lead to 10. Courage 2, Dash 1 Jaedyn Shaw scored the tying goal in the 71st minute and Hannah Betfort provided the winner 10 minutes later as North Carolina rallied for the victory over Houston at Cary, N.C. Avery Patterson scored for the Dash (3-8-2, 11 points), who lost their third straight match and stand 0-4-1 over their past five games. Both North Carolina goals came after Houston's Sarah Puntigam drew her second yellow card of the match, exiting in the 69th minute with the automatic upgrade to red and leaving the Dash with just 10 players. First, Malia Berkely dribbled forward and sent a pass over to Shaw, who drilled a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net. In the 81st minute, Manaka Matsukubo sent a cross toward the net and Betford tipped in into the net as the Courage (5-5-3, 18 points) won their second straight match. Houston struck in the opening minute as Patterson drove a left-footed shot to the left of North Carolina goalie Casey Murphy. --Field Level Media

Rose Lavelle return headlines USWNT roster for summer friendlies against Ireland, Canada

Rose Lavelle is back with the U.S. women's national team for the first time in six months, joining a national team roster of mostly domestic players for a trio of friendlies as head coach Emma Hayes makes good on her promise to give most of the team's European-based players a break this summer. Hayes announced her 25-player roster on Wednesday for three friendlies spanning June and July. The team will first travel to Commerce City, Colo., and then Cincinnati, Ohio, for a pair of matches against Ireland on June 26 and June 29, before heading to Washington, D.C., to face continental rival Canada at Audi Field on July 2. Advertisement Hayes continues to find ways to deepen the USWNT player pool, tapping a quartet of players who are being called into this national team environment for the first time. Six players on this roster have yet to be capped. Lavelle brings veteran leadership to the squad, returning to the international stage for the first time in 6 1/2 months after recovering from ankle surgery. The veteran midfielder recently returned to the pitch for Gotham, subbing on in the 74th minute in her team's 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Current. The USWNT manager said 23 players will suit up for each of the three games. USWNT June and July friendlies roster GOALKEEPERS (3): Angelina Anderson (Angel City FC), Claudia Dickey (Seattle Reign FC) Mandy McGlynn (Utah Royals) Advertisement DEFENDERS (10): Kerry Abello (Orlando Pride), Jordyn Bugg (Seattle Reign FC), Naomi Girma (Chelsea FC), Lilly Reale (Gotham FC), Tara McKeown (Washington Spirit), Avery Patterson (Houston Dash), Izzy Rodriguez (Kansas City Current), Emily Sams (Orlando Pride), Emily Sonnett (Gotham FC), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC) MIDFIELDERS (6): Croix Bethune (Washington Spirit), Sam Coffey (Portland Thorns FC), Claire Hutton (Kansas City Current), Rose Lavelle (Gotham FC), Sam Meza (Seattle Reign FC), Olivia Moultrie (Portland Thorns FC) FORWARDS (6): Lynn Biyendolo (Seattle Reign FC), Michelle Cooper (Kansas City Current), Yazmeen Ryan (Houston Dash), Emma Sears (Racing Louisville), Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals), Alyssa Thompson (Angel City FC) Lavelle's anticipated return Hayes recently teased Lavelle's return to the national team, alluding to the veteran midfielder's value as one of the most experienced players on her roster. 'She's had, as she calls it, a very lengthy layoff,' Hayes told ESPN last week, joking Lavelle was 'bored senseless' at home. 'We miss her experience, and very much looking forward to her coming back.' Advertisement The World Cup and Olympic champion has 110 caps under her belt, as well as 24 international goals, including in the 2019 Women's World Cup final. She last played for the USWNT in the last match of 2024 against the Netherlands. It's likely that Lavelle's return to the pitch will be measured, with a near guarantee she'll feature in Cincinnati. The 30-year-old is considered one of the most popular local athletes from the region in the last decade, and a product of Notre Dame High School. Lavelle is also one of only six players on this roster to have played in a world championship at the senior level, offering Hayes a chance to blend varying experience levels across these three upcoming friendlies. Other players with similar international experience include midfielder Bethune, forward Biyendolo, defender Sonnett, midfielder Coffey and defender Girma. Like Lavelle, fellow midfielder Bethune, the 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year, returns to the national team roster a long recovery from surgery. Bethune, who is returning from a knee injury, last played with the USWNT at the Olympics in France. A roster of mostly NWSL talent Hayes' decision to rest most of her European-based talent offers those players, including regular starters like Arsenal's Emily Fox and Lyon's Lindsey Heaps, a much-needed break as the USWNT looks ahead to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil and Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. Advertisement Many of these players haven't had significant time off in two years as they pushed through long seasons and various international competitions in that time. Chelsea's Girma, who made her return to the USWNT in the last FIFA window, is the only European-based player to be called into this upcoming window. Hayes is continuing to test the depth of USWNT's player pool during this window, the former Chelsea manager has stressed. 'We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool, and those are some of the key goals of this three-game window,' Hayes said in her announcement. 'On this roster, we have players with a varied amount of experience, and my priority is to deepen the exposures required for international soccer. These are three challenging matches and as always, we want to win, but also to make sure we are ready for the next steps.' Hayes' roster features four players earning their first call-ups in defenders Bugg, Reale and Rodriguez, and midfielder Meza. That brings the number of players receiving first-time callups under Hayes up to 27. Bugg, Reale and Rodriguez all played in the U-20 Women's World Cup, while Meza was on the U-17 WWC roster. Advertisement While this roster features 19 players with fewer than 10 caps, a handful of these players have become regular call-ups for Hayes in recent windows, especially as the team remains without some of its biggest stars up front, including the entirety of the Triple Espresso. (Hayes said last week she anticipates Trinity Rodman's return to the NWSL in July, while Sophia Wilson and Mal Swanson have announced their pregnancies.) That's not to say that Hayes is without strong attacking options, however. Utah's Ally Sentnor notched her first brace on June 3 against Jamaica in the most recent window and is a player Hayes has expressed extreme confidence in. She and the other five forwards on this roster (Biyendolo, Cooper, Ryan, Sears, Thompson) have a combined 19 goals in the NWSL so far this year. Houston's Ryan is also returning to the fold after being unavailable in the last FIFA window because of an injury. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. NWSL roundup: Reign score two late to tie Stars

June 15 - Lynn Biyendolo and Jordyn Bugg scored within a two-minute span late in the match to allow the Seattle Reign FC to pull off a 2-2 tie with the host Chicago Stars on Saturday. The late scoring for Seattle (5-4-3, 18 points) extended Chicago's winless streak to eight matches. Ludmila scored both goals for the Stars (1-8-3, 6 points) in the first half. Ludmila's scoring also came in rapid fashion, with her goals in the 11th and 13th minutes. Both tallies came at the end of fast breaks, with Maitane Lopez and Sam Staab collecting assists. Biyendolo converted on a shot from outside the box in the 87th minute. Two minutes later, Bugg found the net from outside the box on the right side, with the ball going into the opposite side of the goal off Maddie Dahlien's pass. The Reign went right back into scoring position, with Stars goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz stopping Maddie Mercado's attempt to keep the score tied. The Stars scored more than one goal for the third time this season. Kansas City Current 4, Racing Louisville FC 2: The host Current scored three goals in the first 20 minutes on the way to remaining undefeated. Kansas City began with an own goal two minutes into the game and then got goals by Michelle Cooper and Bia Zaneratto. Temwa Chawinga added the final goal in extra time for Kansas City (10-2-0, 30 points). Racing Louisville (5-5-2, 17 points) received second-half goals from Janine Sonis and Uchenna Kanu.
