Cambodian general 'dies during clash'
Cambodian general Srey Duk, a close confidant of former Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, has reportedly been killed during the recent Thai-Cambodian border clashes. A Second Army Region source on Tuesday confirmed the death of Gen Srey Duk, deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Army and commander of Cambodia's 3rd Support Division, during one such skirmish. Gen Srey Duk had engaged in bilateral talks with Maj Gen Sompop Paravej, commander of Thailand's Suranaree task force, regarding encroachments in the disputed border area near Chong Bok in Ubon Ratchathani. These discussions, aimed at de-escalating the tension, led to the backfilling of trenches and the withdrawal of some troops from the zone on June 8. The general was involved in an earlier conflict at the Preah Vihear temple, a World Heritage Site, in 2011. Jakrapob Penkair, adviser to the secretary-general of the Thai prime minister, took to Facebook in response to the death of Gen Srey Duk. "Let this be recorded before it is forgotten that Gen Srey, who died in the Thai counterattack, was the instigator of this bloodshed between the two countries," he posted. "It was his wife who organised a musical performance at the Tri Muk Pavilion -- located in the disputed Emerald Triangle area -- that crossed into the overlapping border zone." The action of the general's wife led to the warnings from Thai military officials, said Mr Jakrapob. Instead, Gen Srey Duk reacted with hostility, initiating provocations that included the digging of trenches in restricted Thai territory, showing a premeditated Cambodian plan to provoke and escalate tension, Mr Jakrapob added.

Thai Army postpones border committee meeting as Cambodian shelling continues
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has announced the indefinite postponement of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting due to ongoing cross-border attacks by Cambodian forces, while reaffirming its intent to proceed with the meeting when conditions allow. Army spokesman Maj Gen Vinthai Suwaree (pic) said on Tuesday (July 29) that the Second Army Region had postponed the scheduled RBC meeting, originally set to begin at 7.00am. The meeting was to involve Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, Commander of the Second Army Region, and Lt Gen Amarit Boonsuya, Commander of the First Army Region, who is responsible for operations in Sa Kaeo province, along with their Cambodian military counterparts. The start time was first delayed to 10.00am due to continued clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, before being postponed indefinitely. Maj Gen Vinthai noted that efforts to arrange the meeting are ongoing, despite the lack of a confirmed date and time. The RTA has received reports from the Second Army Region indicating that Cambodian forces have violated the ceasefire agreement, engaging in multiple acts of provocation and armed attacks across various areas. Thai forces have responded in accordance with the evolving situation on the ground. Following Thailand's adherence to the ceasefire from midnight onward, Thai troops have closely monitored frontline developments. Throughout the night and into the morning, multiple reports emerged of Cambodian military activity involving harassment and the use of supporting fire into Thai territory. Incidents have been reported in several border zones, including Chong Bok, Chong An Ma, Sam Tae, Prasat Ta Khwai, and Phu Makua. Thai forces responded proportionately using frontline personnel and supporting firepower to suppress the ongoing provocations. - The Nation/ANN

Cambodia escalates border attacks with heavy weapons, cyber warfare: Thai military
Cambodia has intensified its attacks along the Thai border, deploying additional troops, launching artillery strikes, and using cyber tactics, according to a report from Thailand's Second Army Region. The military region, which oversees the northeastern provinces, released an update on the border situation from Sunday night through noon on Monday. It stated that Cambodia had used BM-21 multi-barrel rocket launchers to strike several locations, including Hill 677, Phu Phee, Pha Mor E-Daeng, Phra Wiharn and Phu Makhuea. Movements of PHL-03 rocket launchers were also observed at Samraong Airport in Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province, which borders Thailand's Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket and Surin provinces. In response, Thai forces returned fire at strategic targets near the Chong Bok and Chong An Ma crossings, as well as around the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom temple ruins. Heavy fighting broke out in areas around Chong An Ma, Phu Phee, and Phu Makhuea, leaving several Thai soldiers injured. Cambodian troops have taken firm control of the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom temple ruins in Surin and continue to reinforce their positions there. Additional Cambodian forces were deployed, and in some instances, reports said they mistakenly fired on each other in the Chong An Ma and Pha Mor E-Daeng areas. The Second Army Region warned that intense clashes are expected to continue in the areas of Chong An Ma, Phu Makhuea, Phu Phee, Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom. During area surveys for troop positioning, Thai soldiers also discovered Cambodian landmines. In a further escalation, Cambodian hackers attempted to breach the computer systems of Thai government agencies, the report added. Meanwhile, 28 Cambodian rockets struck villages in Ban Kruat district of Buri Ram and Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket, injuring two people and killing one. At 4.30pm on Sunday, Thailand repatriated the bodies of 12 Cambodian nationals who were killed in fighting at Phu Makhuea. The transfer was carried out on humanitarian grounds, the Second Army Region said.

Thai Foreign Ministry condemns Cambodia's repeated attacks on communities, lies
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday said it 'condemns in the strongest terms' Cambodia for repeatedly attacking Thai communities and lies that Thailand fired first. The ministry issued its statement concerning artillery attacks on people's homes in the northeastern province of Surin early Sunday morning. 'This morning (27 July 2025) around 4.30 hrs., heavy artillery shots were fired into civilian homes in Surin province in Thailand by Cambodian armed forces, followed by a disinformation campaign launched by Cambodia falsely alleging Thailand fired the first shots,' the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the statement. 'Thailand condemns in the strongest terms this egregious and repeated violation of international law and calls on Cambodia to immediately cease attacking civilian targets,' the ministry said. It blamed Cambodia for lacking honesty and continuously violating human rights. 'Any cessation of hostilities cannot be reached while Cambodia is severely lacking in good faith and repeatedly violating the basic principles of human rights and humanitarian law,' the ministry's statement read. 'Thailand reserves the inherent right to self-defence enshrined in Article 51 of the UN Charter and has responded at limited military targets to neutralise the threats to our national sovereignty and territorial integrity,' the ministry said. It urged the international community to condemn 'these inhumane, reprehensible acts being committed by Cambodia which have no place in a rules-based international order.' The Foreign Ministry's statement came as border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia continued for the fourth day, just after United States President Donald Trump's call for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Second Army Region said Cambodia fired rockets from multi-barrel rocket launchers at Ta Muen Thom temple ruins in Surin on Sunday, and that the attack was "a clear violation of Thai sovereignty".

Cambodia prepares counterattack at Phu Ma Kua — plans heavy use of indirect munitions
PHNOM PENH: Cambodia is reportedly preparing a military counteroffensive at Phu Ma Kua in Ubon Ratchathani border provice, with the Second Army Region warning of potential heavy use of indirect fire weapons by the opposing forces, following Thailand's recapture of 90% of the area and the raising of the Thai national flag. At 12.15pm, the Facebook page of the Second Army Region reported that, following Thailand's recent recapture of Phu Makua, Cambodia is preparing to deploy significant military force and a large number of projectile munitions fired from either mortars or artillery. The public is urged to remain cautious, follow official updates, and maintain trust in the Thai military. Earlier in the morning, Thai troops raised the national flag atop Phu Ma Kua after clearing 90% of the area, which had previously been seized by Cambodian forces. The military stated it is ready to respond immediately should Cambodian troops attempt to re-enter or escalate hostilities. - The Nation/ANN
