Cricket-West Indies recall Hope, drop Roach for home series v Australia

The three-test series, which begins in Barbados on June 25, marks the start of the team's new World Test Championship cycle. Limited-overs captain Hope has played 38 tests, the last of which came in Sri Lanka in late 2021. Kevlon Anderson earned a first test call-up while Brandon King was also included in the squad to strengthen their batting order against World Test Champions Australia's formidable pace attack. "Brandon King's inclusion fits a role we have identified that needs special focus to take our team to those closer to the top of the rankings," head coach Daren Sammy said in a statement issued by Cricket West Indies on Tuesday. With Roach dropped from the squad, which is captained by Roston Chase, the pace bowling duties will largely fall to Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph. Sammy asked fans to be patient with the team, which currently ranks eighth in tests. "I am truly looking forward to this series because we want to start off strongly and make our home turf a fortress during this cycle, while having our passionate and proud fans behind us," Sammy said. "The matches will be challenging but I believe in this core of players, and they are eager to wear the maroon and make our fans happy." Cricket-UK visa issues rule Hosein out of West Indies' T20 opener in England

The first T20 match takes place at the Riverside Ground in Durham on Friday and the players could potentially miss the entire series. West Indies Cricket (CWI) said on Friday that the updated UK visa entry requirements for Trinidad and Tobago citizens, which came into effect on April 23 and May 12 required both players to submit visa applications and attend mandatory in-person appointments. CWI director Miles Bascombe explained that Hosein, who was selected for both the England and Ireland legs of the tour, could not fulfil the new visa requirements in time as he was playing in the Pakistan Super League, which wrapped up late due to the India-Pakistan conflict last month. Goolie, who was a late addition to the squad, "was unable to secure the required visa waiver, as the transition period for Trinidad and Tobago residents had already expired." "These processes are ultimately governed by UK immigration authorities and remain outside of CWI's control," the board said. Maxwell took the decision to prioritise his preparation for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, and his commitment to franchise leagues, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement. "I think back to right at the start I was picked ahead of my time and out of the blue. I was just proud just to be playing a couple of games for Australia. I thought I was just going to have that," the two-time World Cup winner said in the statement. "Since then, I have been able to go through the up and downs of being dropped, being brought back, playing in a few World Cups and being a part of some great teams." The 36-year-old has played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7 - second only to Andre Russell's 130.22. Maxwell's 201 not out from 128 balls while battling cramps in a 2023 World Cup match against Afghanistanis considered the greatest knock in this format. Maxwell, who played the last of his seven tests in 2017, told the Final Word Podcast that the toll of 50-overs cricket, especially after a leg injury he suffered in 2022, affected his fielding ability during the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how (the) body was reacting to the conditions," he said. "I had a good chat with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward," he told the Final Word Podcast. "We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'." CA chief executive Todd Greenberg congratulated Maxwell for "one of the most exciting and influential one day international careers in the format's history". "Glenn's ballistic batting has lit up the cricket world and been one of the cornerstones of Australia's continued success in the 50 over game, including his heroic role in the 2023 World Cup triumph," Greenberg said. Root's masterly 166 off 139 balls helped England, who won the first ODI by 238 runs at Edgbaston, chase down a target of 309 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Root, 34, overtook Eoin Morgan to become England's leading ODI run-scorer and also the first Englishman to score more than 7,000 runs in the format. The victory also ensured England's new era under Harry Brook began on a flying note. He succeeded Jos Buttler after the wicketkeeper-batter stepped down following their group stage exit from the ICC Champions Trophy. "As long as I have the motivation, want to get better every day, want to be there at the end, you are always adding to the group," Root said. "If I keep contributing, I will keep putting myself forward." England opened their run chase in disastrous fashion, reduced to 2-2 after both openers, Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, were dismissed for ducks. Dropped on 30 by Hope off the bowling of Jayden Seales, Brook went on to make 47 as he tried to stabilise their innings before falling to Alzarri Joseph, who ended with figures of 4-31. With Buttler out for a duck and Jacob Bethell trapped lbw, Root anchored the innings, putting together a 143-run partnership with Jacks (49). But after Brydon Carse (2) was dismissed, Rashid (10) provided Root help on the other end as England chased down the target with seven balls to spare. "We certainly did (lose our way)," Hope said. "With the position we were in around that 35-over mark, we should have put on 30 to 40 more runs at least. "But we just fell away at the end and didn't give ourselves the best chance of dominating the game with the bat. "I have to commend the bowlers for the fight they showed to keep us in the game.
