Kanwar route eatery staff stripped to ascertain faith
1 2 3 4 5 6 Agra: Members of a Hindu outfit allegedly tried to forcibly verify the religious identity of a dhaba worker by attempting to strip him during an 'identity campaign' near the Kanwar Yatra route on Saturday at Pandit Ji Vaishno Dhaba along Delhi-Dehradun National Highway 58 in Muzaffarnagar. The confrontation began when the team scanned the eatery's QR code and claimed, erroneously, that the owner belonged to the minority community. The employee at the receiving end of the assault, Gopal, said, "I work here and live at the hotel. These people tried to take off my pants. First, they asked for my Aadhaar card, but I don't have it. They were intent on stripping me naked. I'm unwell. I told them I'm not a Muslim, I am a Hindu. I didn't lie." Police soon reached the spot and brought the situation under control. This is not a Hindu-run establishment and is misusing the name 'Pandit'." He referred to state govt directives requiring eateries to display the owner's name and warned of legal action under Section 420 for misrepresentation. Multiple dhabas operate along NH-58 in Muzaffarnagar, many of which shut during the Kanwar Yatra if they serve non-vegetarian food. Last year, similar pressure was applied on fruit sellers and dhaba owners to display their names. However, in July 2024, Supreme Court issued an interim stay on such directives from the UP and Uttarakhand govts. The court held that eateries and shops could only be required to indicate whether they serve veg or non-veg food, not display names of owners or staff. The directive, which had emerged during last year's Yatra, had led to harassment of Muslim shopkeepers and staff. Several establishments were reportedly forced to shut, dismiss Muslim workers, or alter names to avoid targeting. Opposition leaders and rights activists termed the orders discriminatory and said they risked marginalising specific communities economically. Muzaffarnagar borders Uttarakhand and serves as a key passage for lakhs of devotees from UP, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana, who collect Ganga water from Haridwar during the Shravan month. When asked about the ongoing identity campaign, SP (city), Satyanarayan Prajapat, said, "The guidelines of the Supreme Court will be followed."

Businessman loses RM932,300 in college tender scam in Kemaman
KUALA TERENGGANU: A 52-year-old businessman lost RM932,300 after being deceived by a syndicate offering a fake tender for a college procurement project in Kemaman. Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the victim received a WhatsApp message on May 28 from a man posing as a college representative. The suspect offered a closed tender to supply portable generator sets. 'The victim transferred RM932,300 into two bank accounts using company funds and personal savings. Later, he found out the college had no such tender,' Azli said in a statement. The victim lodged a police report late last night, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Kuantan High Court reverses acquittal of two friends in RM66,300 fraud case
KUANTAN: The Kuantan High Court today overturned a Sessions Court decision that had acquitted and discharged two friends accused of deceiving a businessman out of RM66,300 some six years ago. The court upheld a 12-month jail sentence and RM5,000 fine, or six months' jail in default, against Rosli Awang Ngah, 62, a settler. Shahrul Azizul Musa, 44, and Muhammad Azman Zainal Hamzah, 36, were initially acquitted by the Sessions Court on Sept 13, 2023, while Rosli was convicted. High Court judge Datuk Mohd Radzi Harun allowed the prosecution's appeal against the acquittal of Shahrul Azizul and Azman, and dismissed Rosli's appeal against his sentencing. The three had previously been jointly charged with deceiving a 53-year-old man into surrendering RM66,300 as a deposit for leasing an oil palm plantation at Sungai Cherabang. They committed the offence between Feb 15 and June 19, 2019, through three transactions made to bank accounts belonging to Rosli and Shahrul Azizul in Kuala Lipis and Raub, respectively. The money was allegedly meant to help secure a deal with the authorities and government, leading the victim to hand over the cash. The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. The prosecution was led by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry, while the three were represented by Shamsul Akmar Yusof. In delivering the verdict, Radzi said the Sessions Court had erred in acquitting Shahrul Azizul and Azman. Fadhly urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing the rise in fraud cases and emphasising that the verdict should serve as a lesson not only to the accused but also to the public. In mitigation, Shamsul Akmar pleaded for a minimum sentence, saying that the accused have families to support. Radzi sentenced Shahrul Azizul and Azman to 12 months in prison and one stroke of the rotan each, while Rosli's sentence of 12 months' imprisonment and a RM5,000 fine was upheld. He ordered the sentences to commence immediately and denied a stay of execution.

SEREMBAN: A Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) Land Scheme officer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of cheating a senior citizen in relation to repair works at a rubber collection centre two years ago. Eddy Khirin Bunaim, 45, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Darmafikri Abu Adam. He is accused of deceiving a 68-year-old man into signing a Felda Lui Selatan 1 Village Development and Security Committee cheque, supposedly for a RM12,000 payment to a supplier. The payment was purportedly intended as an advance for repair works at the Felda Lui Selatan 1 and 2 Rubber Collection Centres, even though the said supplier had not been appointed to carry out the works. The offence was allegedly committed at a bank branch in Bahau on March 16, 2023. He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of between one and ten years' imprisonment, with caning, and a fine upon conviction. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Zainab Yahaya proposed bail at RM15,000, with an additional condition requiring the accused to report to the nearest MACC office monthly until the conclusion of the trial. The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for minimal bail on the grounds that he is the sole provider for four school-going children and is currently pursuing further studies. The court allowed bail at RM5,000 with one surety and imposed the additional conditions. The case has been fixed for mention on August 14.
