Five detainees plead guilty to escaping Pasir Mas court lockup

KOTA BHARU: Five detainees who escaped from the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup last week pleaded guilty today to charges of fleeing lawful custody. The accused, Mohd Safiuddin Hanif Mohd, 38, Muhamad Norshamzee Mohd Noresan Shargawi, 32, Mohamad Akmal Mohd Zahari, 31, Mohd Haris Zakaria, 37, and Muhammad Alif Izham Hussim, 23, entered their pleas before Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid. The first charge stated that the five escaped from the Pasir Mas Sessions Court lockup at 10.20 am on June 22, an offence under Section 24 of the Penal Code. They were also charged with breaking into a house in Kampung Kubang Bongor, Pasir Mas, at 10.30 am the same day to steal a mobile phone, violating Section 457 of the Penal Code. Additionally, Mohd Safiuddin Hanif faced a separate charge under Section 332 for causing harm to a police officer during the escape. Deputy public prosecutor Syazalia Che Suhaimi opposed bail, citing ongoing drug cases and prior escape records. Defence lawyer Nur Amira Mat requested minimal bail, citing the accused's low-income jobs and family responsibilities. The court denied bail and set August 13 for case re-mention.

Melaka police bust ‘Yoe Gomen Gang' targeting schools, govt offices

MELAKA: Police in Melaka have dismantled the 'Yoe Gomen Gang' following a series of break-ins at schools and government offices in Melaka Tengah since April. Three suspects, aged 35, 36, and 40, were arrested in a raid at a resort condominium in Tanjung Kling early on June 21. Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the unemployed suspects primarily targeted school offices, district education departments, and other government premises, stealing cash amounting to RM9,200. Their method involved prying open office doors, usually the backdoor, using a screwdriver between 1 am and 4.30 am. 'Initial investigations and confessions reveal that six of the eight cases involved school offices, while the other two targeted government buildings,' Christopher said during a press conference. The gang was also linked to similar crimes in Alor Gajah, Jasin, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, and Kuala Lumpur. The stolen funds were reportedly used for motorcycle down payments, which were then used in further criminal activities. The gang leader, known as Yoe, has 27 prior criminal records, mostly under Section 457 of the Penal Code for break-ins and theft. Another member, Fadil, 36, has 15 similar records, while his 40-year-old brother, Awe, has six, including one break-in case. Urine tests showed one suspect tested positive for methamphetamine. All three have been remanded until tomorrow for further investigation. In a separate case, police are investigating the death of a nine-year-old disabled girl suspected to be a victim of abuse. A post-mortem conducted by Melaka Hospital's Forensic Department has yet to determine the exact cause of death, pending lab results. The girl's mother and stepfather are currently under remand for negligence investigations.

Burglary gang targeting schools, govt offices for cash busted

MELAKA: Melaka police have busted the 'Yoe Gomen Gang' after eight cases of breaking into schools and government offices in the Melaka Tengah district since April, with the arrest of three members recently. Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said all the men, aged 35, 36 and 40, were arrested in a raid on a resort condominium in Tanjung Kling at about 1.50am on June 21. He said all the suspects, who are unemployed, targeted school offices, district education offices and several other government offices to steal cash found on the premises, involving a loss of RM9,200. "The modus operandi of the Yoe Gomen Gang is to break into the premises involved between 1am and 4.30am by prying open the office doors, usually the backdoor, using a screwdriver. "Based on initial investigations and the suspects' confession, six of the eight cases committed by the 'Yoe Gomen Gang' were school offices while the other two were other government offices," he said at a press conference here Thursday (June 26). He said the gang of burglars was also involved in two similar cases in the Alor Gajah and Jasin districts (one each) as well as one case each outside Melaka, in Kelantan, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur. He said the stolen money was used to pay down payment for motorcycles which were then used to commit the crimes. Christopher said a check of the criminal records of the gang leader, known as Yoe, found that the suspect had 27 prior records, with 24 under Section 457 of the Penal Code for breaking, entering and theft. He said another gang member known as Fadil, 36, has 15 criminal records under Section 457 of the Penal Code besides two drug cases while his 40-year-old brother known as Awe has six criminal records including one case of break-in and theft. "On urine screening of the three suspects, one tested positive for methamphetamine," he said. He said all three suspects were remanded until tomorrow to assist in further investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code. In another case, Christopher said based on the detailed interrogation conducted by police on the parents of a nine-year-old physically disabled girl who was suspected of being abused and died on Monday, there is strong evidence linking the two suspects to negligence that led to the victim's death. "We conducted a polygraph test yesterday and the results were quite positive regarding what the suspects told the police, especially their admission to beating the victim. "There were indeed old bruises on the victim's body in addition to a broken leg which likely occurred over a month ago, but it was not the main cause of the victim's death," he said. He said a post-mortem on the victim was conducted by the Melaka Hospital Forensic Department on June 24 and as of now, the cause of the child's death issued by the hospital is 'pending laboratory investigation'. He said the police would continue to question the two suspects from time to time. On Monday, media reported that a nine-year-old girl had died at a private hospital here, suspected to be due to abuse. Following that, on the same day, a couple, who are the victim's biological mother and stepfather, were remanded for seven days from June 24-30 to assist in the investigation. - Bernama

Couple held for series of housebreaking, robbery cases since January

MELAKA: Police have arrested a couple suspected of involvement in seven housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka and neighbouring states since January. Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the unemployed couple, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. "On May 28, police received two reports involving housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district, linked to the couple. "Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture," he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four others in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items were seized, including electrical appliances, furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 for robbery. In a separate development, Christopher said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot from an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. "Following intelligence gathering and a public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The case is still under investigation, and police urged the public not to speculate, as it could interfere with ongoing efforts. – BERNAMA
