Speeding? Phone use? Sharjah says no discounts for dangerous driving
The Sharjah Executive Council has identified the traffic violations that are exempted from the discount that apply to regular violations. The council, on Tuesday, issued a resolution that regulates the exemption rate for traffic violations in the Emirate of Sharjah. Traffic offenders will have 35% of their fine waived if they pay it within 60 days of committing the offence. The discount does not apply to the critical violations, according to Colonel Abdulrahman Mohammed Khater, Deputy Director of the Security Media Department at Sharjah Police. In his statement to the "Direct Line" programme, Colonel Khater explained that the decision issued by the SEC concerning the regulation of traffic violation exemptions in the emirate excludes critical traffic violations from any exemptions. He explained that the violations that are classified as critical include: - Driving at excessive speeds. - Driving recklessly in a way that poses safety road users and property to danger. - Failing to stick to rules of driving trucks - Pedestrians crossing the road in the wrong places. - Failing to abide by traffic lights. - Stopping in the middle of the road for no reason. - Using mobile phone while driving. Previously, these violations were subject to a deduction. However, it should be noted that, at present, significant violations are not subject to the aforementioned cut. The list was expanded in the latest decision due to traffic analysis, which identified violations directly related to traffic accidents. Consequently, these violations were exempted from the aforementioned discount.

Sharjah cuts traffic fatalities by 24% amid ongoing safety campaigns
Sharjah Police significantly reduced traffic accident fatalities by 24 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, achieving a rate of 1.76 deaths per 100,000 people. This success highlights the effectiveness of their proactive strategies in enhancing road safety and preventing accidents. The Traffic and Patrols Department, in collaboration with the Security Media Department, conducted 12 targeted campaigns against dangerous driving behaviours, including: Distracted driving Improper parking Jaywalking Speeding Unsafe motorcycle use Sharjah traffic safety These programs reached nearly 905,895 individuals across the emirate. Additionally, the Traffic and Patrols Department supported road safety by securing 272 events and activities. They also provided traffic assistance for 1,976 maintenance and development projects on roads and infrastructure, improving traffic flow and boosting overall safety readiness. Brigadier General Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, Director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, attributed these positive results to community engagement and increased public awareness and compliance. He thanked the public for their cooperation, emphasising that these achievements reflect Sharjah Police's vision to enhance road security through integrated efforts in prevention, awareness, and control, ultimately aiming to protect lives and improve traffic safety.

Traffic Law reboot off to smooth start
KUWAIT CITY, April 22: Enhanced road discipline and compliance among motorists were noticeable on Tuesday -- the first day of implementing the revised Traffic Law. Motorists are obligated to use seatbelts, abstain from mobile phones usage by hand while driving, respect traffic signals, and refrain from parking in restricted zones. Issued in January, Decree-Law No. 5/2025 amended certain sections of Decree-Law No. 67/1976 on traffic regulations. These amendments were published in the Official Gazette and took effect after a three-month grace period. Director of the Security Media Department at the Ministry of Interior Colonel Othman Al-Gharib affirmed the extensive preparatory efforts of the ministry, including a six-month public awareness campaign to educate citizens and expatriates about the new traffic legislation. He said the objectives of the revised law are to guarantee public safety and prevent traffic accidents that result in fatalities and serious injuries. Al-Gharib informed the newspaper that comprehensive awareness campaigns in multiple languages on various platforms preceded the implementation of the law. He disclosed that these campaigns aimed to inform road users about the updated regulations, associated penalties and the importance of compliance for their safety. He added that his department continues to carry out such awareness campaigns. Director of the Technical Department at the Traffic Affairs and Operations Sector Brigadier General Khaled Al-Adwani urged motorists to pay attention to road signage. He clarified that the posted speed limits are the primary criterion for issuing violation citations, with fines ranging from KD70 to KD150. He warned that exceeding the stipulated speed limit, even by a single kilometer per hour, is considered a violation. In a statement to Al-Akhbar TV, Al- Adwani warned the public about the legal consequences of driving vehicles that make excessive noise, which is punishable by imprisonment. He added that reckless driving is subject to vehicle confiscation through a court order, indicating that parental oversight is vital to prevent minors from committing such infractions. Officer in the Central Control Unit at the General Traffic Department Lieutenant Colonel Ali Al-Qattan affirmed the decline in the number of traffic violations and accidents upon the implementation of the new law. He said the areas that previously experienced high rates of parking violations witnessed a reduction. He also told Al-Akhbar TV that prior to the enactment of the law; the ministry conducted multilingual awareness campaigns, which contributed to increased compliance among motorists.

Kuwait empowers and enhances women's role in maritime security
KUWAIT CITY, April 12: Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, Sheikha Jawaher Al-Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, visited the General Directorate of the Coast Guard to strengthen efforts in supporting and empowering women and to review the department's achievements in this area, the Ministry of Interior said in a press statement issued by the Security Media Department on Friday. The visit is part of a series of tours conducted by Sheikha Jawaher in her capacity as Chairperson of the National Committee for the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, the ministry explained. During the visit, Sheikha Jawaher was presented with a visual briefing highlighting the key achievements of the Coast Guard Directorate, particularly the significant role women have played across various roles and specialties. The presentation also outlined the practical measures taken to empower women and enhance their participation in maintaining maritime security. The ministry added that Sheikha Jawaher toured several key facilities, including the operations department and the logistical support units. She also visited the flagpole, a national symbol of sovereignty, and took part in a sea tour to observe field operations in progress. Sharjah Police launch Ramadan campaign against begging

The campaign, which will run until Eid Al-Fitr, includes dedicated police teams working to monitor and address these issues.
