Man pleads guilty in 2022 intentional crash, stabbing

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A man has pleaded guilty in connection with a crash and stabbing incident that happened nearly three years ago in west Wichita. Julian Gonzalez appeared in Sedgwick County District Court Monday, where he pleaded guilty to the following: Attempted second-degree murder Aggravated battery, a level 4 person felony Aggravated battery, a level 5 person felony Two counts of aggravated endangering a child Criminal possession of a firearm These charges stem from an incident that occurred on Sept. 28, 2022, at the intersection of Murdock and West Street. Gonzalez was accused of ramming a vehicle with his car with a 30-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman, and two children ages 4 and 5 inside. He then reportedly busted out the windows of the car with a pair of nunchucks and then stabbed the 30-year-old man as he tried to get the women and children to safety. One in critical condition after assault near downtown Wichita Two witnesses intervened to stop the assault, including a driver who drove towards Gonzalez to get him to stop, and another with a concealed carry permit who held him at gunpoint until police arrived. Other witnesses rushed to provide first aid to the victims. 'I'll tell you that one citizen at least took off their belt and a shirt and were applying tourniquets,' Lt. Jason Waite, WPD, said at the original crime scene. 'So, citizens of Wichita stepped up tonight, really helped the police department out and probably saved this guy's life, honestly.' Sentencing for Gonzalez is scheduled for Aug. 29. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Wichita toddler dies from injuries, stepfather arrested

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 2-year-old boy has died after being hospitalized with severe injuries earlier this week, and his stepfather has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. Wichita police were first called to Wesley Medical Center on Thursday after the child was brought in with injuries reportedly sustained from a fall. But investigators say the explanation given by the adult caregiver at the time — the boy's stepfather — did not match the nature of the injuries. Wichita man dies after beating, police arrest suspect Due to the severity and suspicious circumstances, detectives from the Wichita Police Department's Exploited and Missing Children's Unit and Homicide Unit took over the investigation. That same day, officers arrested the 32-year-old stepfather on charges of alleged aggravated battery and child abuse. Police said the boy — identified as John Landon Delano — died from his injuries on Saturday morning. Following the child's death, police said the stepfather was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for formal charging. Police said no additional information is being released at this time due to the nature of the case. Stepfather charged with murder in death of toddler

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A man has been formally charged following the death of his 2-year-old stepson. Shawn Lewis, 32, appeared in court Wednesday for his first appearance in the case. He is charged with first-degree murder, along with one count of child abuse. The charges stem from the July 3 death of John Landon Delano, who was hospitalized last week with severe injuries. Police initially responded after the child was taken to Wesley Medical Center with injuries said to be caused by a fall, but investigators said that explanation did not match the extent or nature of the boy's injuries. Fire leaves extensive damage at Wichita tire shop Lewis was arrested the same day on suspicion of aggravated battery and child abuse. After the child died on Saturday morning, the case was referred to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for formal charges. Court documents filed Wednesday show Lewis is being held on a $2 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 21. For more Kansas news, click here. Sedgwick County firefighters weigh in on schedule change

PARK CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — A major schedule shift at the Sedgwick County Fire Department is giving firefighters more time with their families. The county switched from a 24-hour shift and 48 hours off to a 48-hour shift and 96 hours off rotation. Firefighters at Station 32 tell me that with the schedule change, there's more time to recover and feel ready to come to work, thanks to more consistent nights of sleep. A couple of months ago, the fire department surveyed its team and found 92 percent of firefighters favored the new schedule. Captain Don Boone for Sedgwick County Fire District 1 has worked under the old schedule for over 20 years. Donors sought for Newton employee facing leukemia 'So you really didn't realize it until we changed to this new schedule. And now it's like after those four days, that first day, I'm ready to go. It kind of refreshes you,' Boone said. Firefighters are at home more mornings since they're at the station two days in a row and get four days off. 'We're seeing right now that overall, a lot of benefits of it. Our personnel are liking it. They get to not commute as much and travel in and out of the station,' Williams said. That's what Boone says he experiences in his day-to-day life. 'With this new schedule, you end up with two days in the in between where you're actually you get to wake up with your family and spend mornings at home with your family. So it's been really beneficial in that way,' Boone said. Leadership says this schedule change does require flexibility in their daily work schedule to not affect response time. 'We've realized when we went to the schedule that we had to be real cognizant to be better at rotating our crews out so that they weren't on long-duration scenes without being switched out,' Williams said. A small price to pay for Boone. Without even the thought of being woken up in the middle of the night. It kind of relaxes you more, and you are able to get better sleep more consecutively at home. That's the big piece of it, you know, because everybody sleeps better at home,' Boone said. The fire chief says he's seeing a reduction in sick leaves in the short amount of time the schedule change has been in effect, as well as an improvement in morale. He also says it's all being done without adding to the budget. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
