Kuberaa director on why Dhanush's film is failing in Tamil: Thought it would catch on

Director Sekhar Kammula's crime drama 'Kuberaa', starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna Akkineni, has had a decent run at the box office. While the film has been performing well in the Telugu-speaking states and overseas, its reception in the Tamil Nadu market has fallen short of expectations. During a recent interview, director Sekhar Kammula opened up about the box office performance of the film and his surprise at 'Kuberaa' not working in a conversation with OTTPlay, director Sekhar Kammula said, 'In Telugu, it has been exceptional. Even the overseas Tamil circuit is going well. But the domestic Tamil market, I was expecting a lot more, and I hope it will catch up, because the word of mouth is strong, but it is not converting into box office.'Despite the lukewarm reception in Tamil Nadu, Kammula had full of praise for his lead star, Dhanush. 'I was in awe of him and thought it was a moment of pride. So, I thought it would catch on in Tamil and really hope that it happens,' the director added, commenting on Dhanush's performance and commitment to the role. In 'Kuberaa', Dhanush plays Deva, a beggar who is drawn into a high-stakes world of financial crime by former CBI officer Deepak, portrayed by Nagarjuna. The ensemble cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh, and Dilip Tahil in pivotal According to tracking platform Sacnilk, the film has earned Rs 81 crore nett in India in eleven days. The makers also claimed that 'Kuberaa' crossed the Rs 100 crore-mark at the worldwide box office within its first week. However, in Tamil Nadu - despite Dhanush's strong fan base - the response has not matched the work front, Dhanush will next be seen in 'Idly Kadai', a drama film he has directed himself. Scheduled for release on October 1, 2025, the film also stars Arun Vijay and Nithya Menen. Nagarjuna, meanwhile, will be seen in Lokesh Kanagaraj's upcoming film 'Coolie', headlined by Rajinikanth. - Ends
