Fadnavis says firm on full implementation of trilingual policy
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday firmly reiterated his government's commitment to implementing the three-language formula across the state in school. He said the policy would be enforced '100 per cent'—though with flexibility on the choice of third language. Speaking at the Mumbai Tak Baithak, a YouTube interview series of India Today group's regional Marathi YouTube channel, Fadnavis clarified the government's stance on the much-debated language issue, saying the earlier resolution (GR) mandating Hindi as the third language was reviewed following widespread consultations. 'The initial concern raised was—why make Hindi compulsory? We accepted that concern and amended the GR. Now, if a student wishes to choose Hindi, they may, or else any other Indian language can be selected. We are even open to teaching the language online if there are not enough students for a dedicated class,' he said. The CM's comments come in the wake of a joint rally by Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray on July 5, where the Thackeray brothers voiced concern over the imposition of Hindi but maintained they were not opposed to the language itself. 'We won't tolerate forced imposition,' Uddhav had warned during the event. Fadnavis, however, countered the criticism by stating that the issue was being politicised unnecessarily. 'This is not a matter of prestige for us, but one of inclusive education. Whether the Trilingual Formula starts from Class 1 or later, that will be decided by the expert committee chaired by Narendra Jadhav. But the Three language formula will be implemented in Maharashtra 100 percent. We are not here to undermine any Indian language in favour of English,' he said. Addressing concerns around feasibility, especially with low enrolment in certain languages, Fadnavis pointed out logistical challenges: 'What if only two students opt for Telugu—where do we find teachers? That's why we are open to hybrid or digital solutions.' Fadnavis also took a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray, calling his current opposition a 'policy U-turn.' 'It was the previous MVA government that first proposed mandatory Hindi and English from Class 1 to 12. Uddhav Thackeray not only backed that decision but even formed a committee to implement it. His party's deputy leader was part of that very panel. Now they're opposing it. I am surprised by the flip-flop,' he remarked. The three-language formula GR, which mandates the study of three languages in school—typically Marathi and English as compulsory and Hindi as a third language—had become controversial in the state with Sena UBT and MNS terming it as an imposition of Hindi over Marathi. After the public backlash, just ahead of monsoon session on June 28, Fadnavis had announced that they are withdrawing the GR on the three-language formula and formulating a committee to take a decision on it.

Fadnavis terms Dubey's remarks ‘improper': Nobody can deny contribution of Marathi people
Responding to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's comments against MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Sena UBT president Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday said that the remarks were not aimed at all Marathi people but it was improper to say such things. 'Though he hasn't said it to all Marathi people, it is improper to say such things as it leads to different interpretations,' the CM told mediapersons outside the Vidhan Bhavan. In the wake of the language row in Maharashtra, Jharkhand MP Dubey had said that if the Thackerays step out of Maharashtra, 'they will be thrashed repeatedly'. 'You people (Marathis) are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? If you are brave enough to beat Hindi speakers, then you should also beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu,' he had said. Reacting to the comment, Fadnavis said that Marathis have always stood against foreign invaders and have kept the Indian culture alive by fighting against them. Praising the battle history of Maratha warriors, the chief minister said, 'Nobody can deny the contribution of Marathi people and nobody should even try to do it.' Speaking about police denying permission for the MNS march in Mumbai's Mira Road on Tuesday morning, Fadnavis said that it was denied as the party leaders insisted on a particular route for the protest, which could have led to law and order issues. Several MNS workers were detained in this connection since last night. The MNS had called the protest to counter a stir organised by traders after a shop owner was recently thrashed by party workers for refusing to speak in Marathi. 'I inquired with the police as to why permission was denied for the MNS protest march. I was told that they were insistent on a route which would lead to conflict. The police also said that they had inputs about some people who wanted to indulge in some other activities,' Fadnavis said, adding that the police repeatedly requested them to change the route, but they did not accept it. So the permission was denied. Fadnavis added that permission can be given to anyone to hold protest marches, but if someone wants to hold it on their terms and disturb law and order, then it is not good.

Delayed opening of Carnac Bridge leads to first united protest by Sena UBT–MNS
The Sena UBT and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by the estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, respectively, held their first joint protest Wednesday against the prolonged delay in opening the newly reconstructed Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai. Workers from both parties reached the bridge and attempted to open the crucial link in South Mumbai. However, their attempts were thwarted by the Mumbai police, who detained the protestors and took them to the Pydhonie police station. The joint protest came on the heels of Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray's announcement of a 'victory rally' planned for July 5 after the Maharashtra government scrapped the orders over the three-language policy. Both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray had earlier signalled openness to an alliance between the two parties. Meanwhile, Sena UBT MLA Aaditya Thackeray, in a social media post, said that their attempts to open the bridge were prevented by the police, on orders from the state government. 'The police today, on orders from the state government, prevented our local unit from opening the Carnac Bridge for Mumbaikars today. The bridge is finally ready and has been so for a week. Why does the government not open a fully ready bridge for people?,' wrote Aaditya. Speaking to The Indian Express, Arvind Gawde, MNS vice-president, said, 'While initially there were some pending works such as installation of lights, the structure has been completely ready for past 10- 15 days. However, the structure remained closed, leaving people to wait for hours in traffic as all the load comes on the freeway. Three days ago, we had written a letter to the traffic police, appealing to them to open the bridge.' On Wednesday, the delayed opening was also flagged in the Maharashtra Assembly by Congress MLA from Mumbadevi Amin Patel. Built at Rs 60 crore, the Carnac Bridge runs between Masjid and CSMT stations in South Mumbai, providing a direct link to motorists commuting towards P D'Mello Road. The new structure was constructed after the old Carnac Bridge, a 154-year-old structure, was razed in 2022 after a structural audit deemed the British-era bridge unfit for daily usage. The construction work of the bridge concluded in June. However, the opening remained delayed owing to pending clearances from the Central Railways as the bridge passes above the railway tracks. Responding to questions, senior BMC officials alluded that the bridge is likely to open for vehicular movement over the next few days.
