MyLesen B2 gives 663 Miri students safer ride to school
Lee (eleventh left) poses for a photo with JPJ officers, driving academy representatives and students. MIRI (July 13): A total of 663 secondary school students from 18 schools across Miri have successfully participated in the MyLesen B2 Programme, organised by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri at Dewan Dato Permaisuri in Permyjaya here. The special programme enabled eligible students to undergo the required tests and obtain a B2 motorcycle licence at a subsidised fee of only RM250 – a significant reduction from the original cost of RM750, with RM500 covered by the government. Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who officiated the event, said the programme was initiated out of concern for the students' safety- especially those who ride motorcycles to school without a valid licence or proper safety gear. 'I am deeply worried when I see students going to school on motorcycles without a licence or safety equipment. This endangers both themselves and other road users,' said Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman. 'That's why I brought this issue to JPJ at both the state and federal levels to find a solution,' he added. Lee also reminded students of the serious risks involved in traffic accidents and urged them to prioritise road safety. 'Everyone wants to be safe – who doesn't? When you follow traffic rules and ride carefully, you are not only protecting yourself but others as well,' he said, emphasising the importance of both theory and practical training in the licensing process. Students were given a traffic regulation briefing and required to sit for a theory test, and those who passed would proceed to practical motorcycle training and a final test conducted by JPJ. Lee noted that the programme is also open to B40 community members and others without a motorcycle licence. He added that the Ministry is evaluating the possibility of expanding the initiative to other areas if demand continues to grow. 'A driving licence is more than just a document; it symbolises awareness and responsibility. I truly appreciate the cooperation of JPJ, schools, and parents in making this programme a success,' he said. The MyLesen B2 Programme is part of a wider national effort to enhance road safety and reduce the number of unlicensed and underage motorcyclists on Malaysian roads. Also present at the event was JPJ Miri chief enforcement assistant Abdillah Mohamad, who represented Miri JPJ chief Fifi Suhesty Asmuni. lead miri motorcycle MyLesen B2 Programme students

Extra funds needed to fix Desa Indah basketball court before July 19 tourney
Lee (second right) points at cracks on the basketball court at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 3C Recreational Park. MIRI (July 11): Additional funding is needed to repair surface cracks and repaint the basketball court at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 3C Recreational Park in Desa Indah here, said Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. The state Minister of Transport said efforts are underway to secure the necessary allocation to repair and repaint the basketball court floor. He also urged for the electricity supply to the court to be expedited so that the facility can be used at night. 'We hope the lighting system can be operational before the Under-18 and Open 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament scheduled for July 19,' he said after visiting the site yesterday morning. Lee noted that a previous RM350,000 grant was used for the construction of the court's roof, as well as drainage and irrigation works around the perimeter, including the installation of four culvert crossings outside the court area. 'The floor repair works should have been included in the original project scope. We will now work on securing additional funds to address this,' he explained. The project, carried out by Miri City Council (MCC), commenced in January and was completed on May 9. The recreational park has since become a popular spot for residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods, featuring not only the basketball court but also a football field and a combined badminton/sepak takraw court. Separately, Lee reported the completion of a drainage project at Jalan Dato Permaisuri 2C, which started on Jan 6 and was completed on May 5. The RM300,000 project involved constructing a 2.5-meter-wide covered concrete drain spanning more than 200 meters. Lee expressed hope that the improved drainage system will help reduce flash flooding in the area, which had previously been prone to water stagnation – a key contributor to mosquito breeding and dengue problems.

Road safety must be daily, not just festive seasons, says S'wak Transport Minister
Lee puts on a safety helmet on a rider during the road safety campaign, while Ariffin (to his left) and the others look on. MIRI (May 31): Road safety must be embraced as a daily responsibility, not just during festive seasons, and every life saved is the result of a collective effort, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. While the government continues to improve infrastructure and run awareness campaigns, the real impact depends on the commitment and responsibility of all road users, he said. Lee, also the Senadin assemblyman made the remarks during a road safety campaign held in conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration at Permy Mall here today. As part of the campaign, regulated helmets, safety vests, and reflective straps, sponsored by Sarawak Petroleum Berhad (Petros), were distributed to riders and drivers to encourage safer road practices. Citing statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police, Lee said Miri recorded 1,120 road accident cases from January to April this year, marking a reduction of 48 cases or 4.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2024. 'Fatal accidents dropped from 19 to 14, while serious and minor injury cases also decreased,' he said, urging motorists to remain alert, especially along Miri's top five accident-prone roads – Jalan Pan Borneo, Jalan Miri–Bintulu (near Borneo Medical Centre), Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Miri–Pujut, and Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass. 'Every accident is a tragedy, whether it involves the loss of life or damage to property,' he stressed. On a related note, he encouraged eligible secondary school students to sign up for the MyLesen programme, which offers affordable and legal motorcycle licences. 'We want the younger generation to be safety-conscious from an early age,' he said, adding that the programme eases the financial burden on families while ensuring youths receive proper training and education before getting on the road. Lee also extended his Gawai greetings to all Sarawakians, calling on the public to make road safety part of their daily habits. Also in attendance were Miri deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad, and Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah. Gawai Lee Kim Shin miri road safety
