Habitual drug user in Kuching gets five years' jail, one stroke for drug abuse

KUCHING (June 30): The Sessions' Court here today sentenced a 42-year-old habitual drug user to five years in jail and one stroke of the cane for abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi handed down the sentence against Senawi Abang after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1) of the same Act.
The section provides for a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than seven years, along with up to three strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
In delivering the sentence, Saiful also ordered Senawi to undergo supervision for two years after completing his custodial sentence.
Senawi committed the offence at the Padawan District Police Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department office at around 1.30pm on Nov 7, 2024.
He has three previous convictions for the same offence framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA 1952, in September 2020, November 2020 and January 2023.
