Malaysian tour agent arrested in Sepang for allegedly assaulting, threatening couple in Japan over ‘turf' dispute
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — A 36-year-old Malaysian tourism agent was reportedly arrested at a restaurant in Sepang yesterday evening for allegedly threatening and assaulting a Malaysian couple while they were in Japan earlier this year. According to a report in Berita Harian, Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman said the arrest was made following a police report lodged by the victims on January 28, after they returned from Japan. 'This case is believed to have been motivated by dissatisfaction over the management of tourist arrangements to Japan,' he was quoted as saying. The victims are also reportedly tour guides. The suspect, who is said to be an acquaintance of the couple and operates from a different travel agency, is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both. 'The arrest was made at around 5pm today. A remand application will be submitted to the Sepang Magistrates' Court tomorrow,' Norhizam was quoted as saying yesterday. One of the victims, 36-year-old tour guide Noornabilla Azemi, reportedly claimed that the suspect assaulted her by hitting her head against a bed frame and issued death threats during an incident at a friend's rented house in Japan on January 24. She alleged that the attack was witnessed by her husband, Mohamad Zhaza Mohamad, 34. At the time, the couple had reportedly been in Tokyo to lead a Malaysian tour group under a local agency's assignment. Noornabilla reportedly said she had known the suspect for two years and had previously accepted guiding jobs from him. 'I did not expect him to resort to violence just because he was unhappy that I had allegedly entered an area in Japan he considered his turf,' she was quoted as saying. She also reportedly claimed that the suspect assaulted her husband and another Malaysian friend, stole 75,000 yen (approximately RM2,300) in cash, and ordered them to immediately return to Malaysia.

Man arrested for threatening couple in dispute over Japan tours
Police said the suspect is known to the victims, a couple who run a travel agency, and is from a different travel agency. PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly threatening a couple who operate a travel agency after a business dispute about tour packages to Japan. Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman said the incident took place at a restaurant in Dengkil on July 22 last year. Norhizam said the suspect is known to the victims and is from a different travel agency. 'The couple lodged a police report, and we have opened an investigation paper,' he said in a statement. Police will apply for a remand order tomorrow. When contacted, Norhizam confirmed that the suspect was linked to a part-time tour guide who claimed she was threatened with death and beaten by a fellow Malaysian tour operator at a rented house in Japan on Jan 24. However, the man was not the same person involved in the incident in Japan. Harian Metro reported today that the woman said the tour operator slammed her head against a bed frame, pulled her hair, and stomped on her with his boots, leaving her covered in bruises. The woman said she lodged a police report in Japan and reported the matter to the Malaysian high commission in Tokyo. She subsequently filed a report at the Sepang police headquarters and underwent medical examinations upon returning to Malaysia.

Teenage couple charged with murder of Malaysian university student in campus housing
SEPANG, Selangor: Two people - both aged 19 - were charged on Thursday (Jul 10) with murder and abetment by a Malaysian court over the death of a 20-year-old university student in Cyberjaya last month. Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a physiotherapy student from the University of Cyberjaya, was found dead in her condominium unit in the Sepang district of Selangor on the morning of Jun 24, with injuries on her body, reported local media. At the Sepang Magistrate Court on Thursday, M Sri Darvien was charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or jail of between 30 and 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted. According to the charge sheet, Darvien was accused of murdering Maniishapriet between 9.11pm and 11.31pm on Jun 23 at Block A of Mutiara Ville, Free Malaysia Today reported. Mutiara Ville is a shared unit provided by the university located about 1.5km away from the main building. Darvien's girlfriend, D Thineswary, who is also a student at the university, was charged with abetting him in committing the offence, under Section 109 of the Penal Code which was read together with Section 302 carrying the same penalties, reported local media. The couple nodded after the charges were read before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani. The two had arrived at the court under tight police supervision. No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. No bail was granted and the court has set Sep 11 for the next mention of the case for the submission of the post-mortem and chemical analysis reports, according to local media. Darvien's lawyer M Manoharan appealed for the case to be transferred to the High Court for trial as soon as possible since his client was not eligible for bail. Lawyers Mohamed Baharudeen Mohamed Ariff, Abu Bakar Isa Ramat and Joel Ruben John - all of whom were representing Thineswary - also urged the Attorney-General's Chambers to expedite the process. In response, Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin said the prosecution required time to obtain and serve the relevant documents to the defence before the case could be transferred. 'Only once these documents are in order can consent be granted to move the case to the High Court,' said Zaizul when requesting the date for the next case mention, as quoted by the New Straits Times. Earlier, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman said that Maniishapriet's death was due to blunt force of trauma to the head. Maniishapriet lived with five other students but they had returned home for the holidays on Jun 21, leaving her alone at the condominium at Mutiara Ville used as a hostel as she was scheduled to sit for an upcoming examination, local media reported earlier. A total of four people aged between 19 and 20, including Thineswary and Darvien, were arrested during the course of the investigations, according to local media. It was also reported that the main suspect had allegedly spent the night at the condominium unit several times prior to the incident. Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan previously said that investigations revealed that the victim's housemate, who is also the suspect's girlfriend, had handed him the access card and keys to the condominium unit before the incident. At the time, Hussein did not name the suspects.
