Horrifying moment road rage killer shoots toddler in the head after family car honks at him to move out of their way

This is the horrifying moment a driver shot a 23-month-old girl in the head in a road rage attack. The killer, identified as pick-up truck driver Alex de Oliveira Nunes, had seconds earlier pulled over to let a family saloon pass him when it honked at him to get by. But grim CCTV footage filmed in Areia Branca, in Sergipe, in Brazil, on June 24 shows how 28-year-old Nunes then began tailgating the tiny hatchback. As he pulls closer, a hand with a pistol emerges from the driver's window and fires twice at the car in front. Terrified, the hatchback driver tries to get away but is followed by Nunes' pick-up truck as the clip comes to an end. Toddler Layla Sofia Santos Menezes died instantly when one of he bullets hit her in the head, police told local media. He reportedly fled the scene, and was arrested hours later at his home. Nunes, who was drunk at the time, later told the police that he had opened fire to 'scare' the other driver. Police spokesperson Miguel Maximino said Nunes has neither a gun licence nor a driving licence. Maximino added: 'He says he was drunk and that he didn't know who was in the other vehicle.' Nunes is being held in custody while police investigate the killing. He reportedly told cops that he bought the gun from another truck driver two years prior. The child's family told local media that they were less than 100m (330ft) from their home when she was killed. Valéria dos Santos, the child's mother, said: 'We stopped next to a church, I got out with her in my arms asking for help, she was already sighing.' She was buried on June 25 in Povoado Rio das Pedras, in Itabaiana.

Brazil's Unigel approves deal with Petrobras on fertilizer plants, sources say

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 9 (Reuters) - The board of directors of Brazilian chemical firm Unigel on Friday approved a deal proposed by oil giant Petrobras ( opens new tab to settle legal disputes over fertilizer plants in northeastern Brazil, two sources familiar with the matter said. The deal would allow state-run Petrobras to work on resuming operations of the two plants in the states of Sergipe and Bahia, as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's administration seeks to reduce Brazil's reliance on imported fertilizer. Petrobras leased the two nitrogen fertilizer plants to Unigel in 2019 under a 10-year agreement, but both facilities have been shut down since 2023, with Unigel citing unfeasible operating conditions due to high natural gas prices in Brazil. The deal would reestablish Petrobras' possession over the two plants, according to a securities filing released by the oil firm in April, with operations set to resume after a bidding process to contract services to run and maintain them.
