Phillies Demote Rookie Abel After Struggles
Phillies Demote Rookie Abel After Struggles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mick Abel's first start in Major League Baseball looked like the stuff of a future Philadelphia Phillies rotation regular. Advertisement Things didn't go so swimmingly in each subsequent appearance and on Friday, the Phillies demoted the rookie right-hander back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. They called up Seth Johnson in his stead. Abel pitched six innings of five-hit ball with nine strikeouts and zero earned runs in his debut May 18 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was sent back down to the minors shortly after because of the nature of the spot-start, but he returned in early June and wasn't the same pitcher. In his last outing, Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, Abel worked just 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on two hits and five walks. For the season, Abel carried a 5.04 ERA with a 1.360 WHIP over his six starts. A lanky, 6-foot-5, 185-pound right-hander, Abel was taken 15th overall by the Phillies in the 2020 Draft out of Beaverton, Oregon. He ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the organization ahead of this season and pitched to a 2.53 ERA over 10 starts this year at Lehigh Valley. Advertisement Johnson, a compensatory first-round pick in 2019, was the Phillies' No. 13 prospect entering the season. He's had two previous stints in the bigs this season in Philadelphia, the second of which just two days ago when the Phillies were allowed to use a 27th player because of their double-header. The Phillies entered Friday's Independence Day games leading the National League West by 1 1/2 games over the New York Mets. Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues
Phillies Option Mick Abel to Triple-A, Recall Seth Johnson to Major Leagues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of baseball's best starting rotations. But, even with a strong rotation, one of the pitchers has been struggling lately. Ahead of their Fourth of July weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, the team made a roster move. Advertisement The Phillies announced that they have optioned starting pitcher Mick Abel down to Triple-A and brought up Seth Johnson to the Major League roster. Abel started strong but now heads back to the minor leagues after a rough stretch of starts. In his latest outing, he couldn't complete two innings. In his sixth game in the Majors, Abel went just 1.2 innings, allowing five earned runs against the San Diego Padres. He also gave up five walks and two hits, while striking out three. That was his worst start in the Majors, and one of his worst this season overall. He started hot, going six shutout innings in a pitchers' duel against Paul Skenes. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) walks off the field against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images But, after allowing nine earned runs over the last two starts in 4.2 innings of work, his ERA jumped to 5.04, and his numbers took a nosedive overall. The beginning was promising, but the last two starts were concerning. In his place, Johnson gets a longer-term spot on the Major League roster. He went two innings against the Padres, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner in his best outing in the Majors. The 26-year-old Johnson takes the 23-year-old Abel's place on the roster. It's a tough blow to the Phillies, as initially, Abel looked to be another star in the rotation. After this roster move from the Phillies, Abel will look to rekindle what he displayed at the beginning of his MLB career. After a strong start, Abel struggled and now needs a reset in the minor leagues. Phillies demote rookie pitcher Mick Abel to Triple-A 2 months after 9 strikeouts in his debut
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies demoted rookie right-hander Mick Abel, who has struggled since he struck out nine in his major league debut, to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies also recalled reliever Seth Johnson from Lehigh Valley ahead of Friday's game against Cincinnati. The 23-year-old Abel made six starts for the Phillies and went 2-2 with 5.04 ERA with 21 strikeouts and nine walks. 'Mick needed to go down and breathe a little bit,' manager Rob Thomson said. 'Just get a little reset. It's not uncommon.' A 6-foot-5 right-hander selected 15th overall by the Phillies in the 2020 amateur draft, Abel dazzled against Pittsburgh in May when his nine strikeouts tied a Phillies high for a debut, set by Curt Simmons against the New York Giants on Sept. 28, 1947. He hasn't pitched beyond the fifth inning in any of his last four starts and was rocked for five runs in 1 2/3 innings on Wednesday against San Diego. Abel was 3-12 with a 6.46 ERA last year for Lehigh Valley, walking 78 in 108 2/3 innings. He improved to 5-2 with a 2.53 ERA in eight minor league starts this year, walking 19 in 46 1/3 innings. 'This guy's had a really good year,' Thomson said. 'His poise, his composure is outstanding. He's really grown. We just need to get back to that. Just attack the zone and get through adversity.' The Phillies will give Taijuan Walker another start in Abel's place against San Francisco. Walker has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen over the last two seasons. He has made eight starts with 11 relief appearances this season and is 3-5 with one save and a 3.64 ERA. Thomson said he had not made a final decision on who will be the fifth starter after the All-Star break. Top prospect Andrew Painter has two more scheduled starts in Triple-A before the MLB All-Star break and could earn a spot in the rotation. ___ AP MLB:
