Pokemon and Sonic actor dies after cancer battle as tributes flood in
James Carter Cathcart, who voiced characters in both Pokemon and Sonic, has died at the age of 71. Also know as Jimmy Zoppi, James died in Forest Hills, New York two years after being diagnosed with throat cancer. James provided the voice for a number of Pokémon characters, including Team Rocket's James, Meowth, Professor Oak, and Gary Oak. He also voiced Vector the Crocodile in Sonic X as well as in the Shadow the Hedgehog video game. His last voice actor work was doing the English version of Pokémon: Ultimate Journeys, which happened in 2023. He was then forced to retire due to his ill health. Sadly, despite having aggressive chemotherapy, his condition worsened. Tributes have flooded in from the community he worked alongside, including Sonic star Erica Schroeder, who wrote: "Rest in peace dear sweet man. I will miss you. The community will miss you. The world will miss you. One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls no longer walks with us. "James Carter Cathcart you were one of a kind, a gentle, beautiful, playful genius and I was happy to call you my friend. Master of the pen, piano and microphone. Friend to many. Loving father and husband. Thank you for your gifts."

Despite undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, Cathcart's condition worsened after initial treatments failed to take. The battle forced him into retirement in 2023, shortly after wrapping up his final project: the English dub of Pokémon: Ultimate Journeys. In the late 1970s, he released two albums with his band The Laughing Dogs, and since 1981, served as lead vocalist in The Carter Cathcart Band. He also co-wrote 'Remember Me' with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley — a track featured on Frehley's 1989 solo album Trouble Walkin'. Cathcart made his mark across media platforms for decades. He lent his voice to everything from ABC Weekend Special to commercials for KitKat and Coors Light. It comes after Beloved actress Renée Victor also found fame on the landmark show Weeds as tributes continue to pour in for the TV and film icon. Victor died peacefully surrounded by her family at her Sherman Oaks home in California, her agency told Her cause of death was lymphoma - a form of cancer which targets the body's immune system. Her heartbroken daughters Raquel and Margo left a touching tribute to their mom which read: 'Renee is perhaps best known as the voice of 'Abuelita' in Disney's 2017 blockbuster Coco. He was 71. His wife Martha Jacobi confirmed in a social media post that he died at Calvary Hospital in New York City. His ex-wife Jeanne Gari said in an interview that the cause of his death was throat cancer. For more than two decades, Mr Cathcart was the voice of several popular characters in the Pokémon series and movies, including the genial Professor Oak, his grandson Gary, the antagonising James and the wisecracking feline creature Meowth, one of the few Pokémon who could speak. Mr Cathcart joined the cast of Pokémon in 1998, just as the franchise exploded into a global craze. While many of the characters cycled in and out through the series' more than 1,000 episodes, his voice remained a steady presence. Mr Cathcart also had roles in an array of other anime series, video games and animated shows, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece and Shadow the Hedgehog. He retired from voice acting in 2023 after he was diagnosed with cancer. Mr Cathcart appeared in more than 100 roles, according to the entertainment database IMDb, but his work in Pokémon is his best known. James Carter Cathcart, who was best known for his voice acting work in animation and video games, died of throat cancer at 71, Variety reports. The actor, who was frequently credited as "Jimmy Zoppi" and "Carter Cathcart" throughout his career, played a variety of Pokémon 's most memorable supporting characters. Alongside Professor Oak, Cathcart voiced his grandson Gary Oak and Team Rocket's Meowth and James across over 700 episodes of the animated series and 15 movies. That includes Pokémon: The First Movie, Cathcart's first feature film credit. His work wasn't exclusive to animation, either. Cathcart also voiced Vector the Crocodile in the game Shadow the Hedgehog, and provided voices for multiple Pokémon that appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl . Beyond voice acting, Cathcart was a talented musician and writer. He's credited with writing and adapting multiple English-language versions of Pokémon TV movies. After 25 years in the entertainment industry, Cathcart decided to retire from voice acting in 2023 due to his cancer diagnosis, Kotaku writes.
