'Rubiah' a medium to teach cultural values, morality

'Rubiah' carries an important message about the boundaries of interaction between men and women according to Islamic teachings. 05 Jul 2025 02:01pm Noorkhiriah (right) as Mak Alang and Didi Astillah as Rubiah perform their respective roles during the staging of the classic musical theatre Rubiah at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Auditorium, Section 14, Shah Alam. - Bernama photo SHAH ALAM - The staging of the classic musical theatre production 'Rubiah' serves as an important medium to educate the younger generation about Malay-Islamic cultural and moral values, which are increasingly eroding in the wave of modernisation. Its director Associate Prof Dr Aminah Abd Rhapor, a lecturer at the College of Creative Arts Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), said the decision to revive the legendary folklore of Selangor was timely and in line with the current need to strengthen cultural identity and instill noble values in society. Noorkhiriah (right) as Mak Alang and Didi Astillah as Rubiah perform their respective roles during the staging of the classic musical theatre Rubiah at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Auditorium, Section 14, Shah Alam. - Bernama photo "'Rubiah' carries an important message about the boundaries of interaction between men and women according to Islamic teachings, and it highlights love that exalts the glory of God, which is something highly relevant to today's society. "This story doesn't just showcase folklore; it also serves to introduce and cultivate an understanding of Malay culture among the younger generation, many of whom are unfamiliar with or disconnected from their cultural roots," she said when met by Bernama after the musical theatre's opening performance recent. The three-night musical is being staged at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) auditorium at 8.30 pm by Persona Mentera Theatre Association and the National Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN), Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture; in collaboration with UiTM's Faculty of Theatre, Film and Animation and MBSA. In addition to UiTM students, school pupils and JKKN dancers, the production also features actress Didi Astillah as Rubiah and Noorkhiriah as Mak Alang. The play was previously staged at Istana Budaya in 2005 under the direction of Datuk Ahmad Tarmimi Siregar and featured actress Fauziah Latif among others. It relates the story of Rubiah, a young religious woman who faces a dilemma in choosing between romantic love and a higher love - one that not only brings happiness in this world but also brings divine blessings. "The love in 'Rubiah' is a love that glorifies God. It teaches morality, social boundaries and purity... values that are increasingly forgotten today,' the director said. Aminah admitted facing significant challenges in restaging 'Rubiah', which had been staged twice before but expressed her gratitude that the fresh perspective and approach taken this time received positive feedback from the audience. "My approach was a little different and I had never seen the previous versions myself, which allowed me to build a fresher interpretation without being constrained by past portrayals. "We didn't change much… we just adapted it through our own lens. If a piece is already good, there's no need to alter it drastically,' she said. She also said guiding the lead cast was quite challenging too as most of them were young students with no experience in acting. "These students underwent 14 weeks of intensive training. We also paired them with professional artistes and dancers from JKKN so they could gain hands-on experience and improve the quality of their performance,' she said. - BERNAMA

Works on Shah Alam sports complex expected to start in November

The demolition of the old Shah Alam Sports Complex was completed on June 30, ahead of schedule. — Filepic CONSTRUCTION drawings for the Shah Alam Sports Complex are expected to take six months to complete before they are submitted to the city council for approval. Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M Yusop said groundwork for the sports complex will begin in early November once Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) gives regulatory approval. 'We are currently in the early stages of preparing the construction drawings for the Shah Alam Sports Complex. 'In accordance with Phase 1 of the development, we are putting up hoarding that complies with MBSA's building regulations,' he said when met at the launch of Sungai Klang's waste sorting facility. Phase 1 of the project will include the construction of a new stadium, parking facilities, open spaces and Jubilee Park, a public recreational area. The Shah Alam Sports Complex redevelopment plan has three phases and will reportedly cost RM3.28bil. Saipolyazan also clarified that there was no delay in the demolition of the old Shah Alam Stadium. 'There is no truth to the speculation that demolition works were delayed. 'The demolition, originally set for completion by June 30, was finished three to four days ahead of schedule.' Plans to replace the iconic stadium with a modern sports complex was first announced by the Selangor government last year. The new facility is anticipated to be completed in 2029, with construction led by Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd, following a memorandum of understanding with the Selangor government. Hanif Basree Abdul Rahman, acting director of MBSA Engineering Department, confirmed that it is awaiting detailed construction drawings before proceeding with the next steps. 'The overall plans for Shah Alam Sports Complex have been approved. 'However, we must review the detailed drawings to verify if there are any changes,' he said. — By EDWARD RAJENDRA

Malfunctioning water pumps to blame for Taman Bukit Kemuning floods

Mohd Fauzi wants agencies to ensure water suction pumps are in working order. DRAINAGE network in Taman Bukit Kemuning have been desilted to maximise water capacity, which will improve water flow and prevent flooding in the neighbourhood. Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) stepped up coordination with agencies dealing with drainage networks and water suction pumps. 'The council has told the agencies to clean up the drainage networks and ensure water suction pumps under their purview are in working order,' he said after the city council's full board meeting at Wisma MBSA in Shah Alam, Selangor. A water pump that was supposed to channel rainwater out of the area was reported to have failed, resulting in flooding in several areas from Section 25 to Section 36 on June 20 after heavy rain. On MBSA's Golden Parking initiative introduced in conjunction with the city's 25th anniversary, Mohd Fauzi said only 1,150 seniors age 60 and above out of 1,305 applicants were selected. 'Applicants must be a ratepayer without outstanding assessment tax payments, and the applicant's residence and vehicle must be registered under the same name. 'Only one car can be registered for the free parking benefit via the Smart Selangor Parking system or Flexi Parking,' he added. Mohd Fauzi said unsuccessful applications were due to having outstanding assessment tax, unpaid compounds or MBSA traffic fines. 'All these must be settled before reapplying for the initiative,' the mayor said. He said over 20,000 seniors living in Selangor's capital city were eligible for MBSA's free parking initiative. The Golden Parking, valid for two years, aimed to make the city more inclusive to the elderly and was a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the community. Applications need to be renewed every two years. Application form for the initiative can be downloaded from the MBSA portal at or drop by the Revenue Management Section, Finance Department at Level 21, Wisma MBSA, Shah Alam. For enquiries, call the Revenue Management Section at 03-551 33919 (direct line), extensions 1540 or 1521.

MBSA offers free petrol to motorcyclists as part of 25th anniversary

SHAH ALAM: Hundreds of motorcyclists in Shah Alam were given free fuel as the city council marked its 25th anniversary with a community outreach initiative aimed at easing the burden of rising living costs. The initiative, dubbed Jom Isi Minyak Motosikal Percuma (Let's Fill Up for Free), was organised by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) and saw 500 riders receive RM10 worth of petrol each at a Petronas station in Section 15. The one-day event targeted food delivery riders, public sector workers, factory staff and students, groups that frequently rely on motorcycles for their daily transportation. MBSA's Community Development Department chairman Shahrin Ahmad said the effort was part of a broader commitment to building stronger community ties and supporting vulnerable segments of society. 'This is more than just a handout, it's about connection and compassion. It reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering unity and building an inclusive city,' he told reporters at the event here today. Shahrin added that the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), underscoring MBSA's ambition to be a socially conscious local authority. For many, the gesture had a practical impact. Mohd Sidek Asmoin, 40, a food delivery rider, said the assistance, though modest, was significant. 'It may not sound like much, but for someone like me who depends on petrol daily, it helps. I hope more councils follow MBSA's lead and come closer to the ground to understand what communities are facing,' he said. Senior MBSA officials, councillors and representatives from the Selangor Road Transport Department, including deputy director Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat, were present to assist riders and interact with the public. Other community-focused initiatives planned as part of MBSA's Silver Jubilee celebrations include the distribution of mobility aids and a public competition to design a commemorative logo and slogan.
