Bihar electoral roll revision: Voter roll cleanup or votebandi? Top focus on To The Point

This edition of 'To The Point' delves into the contentious voter roll revision exercise in Bihar ahead of state elections, initiated by the Election Commission to eliminate bogus voters. This move has sparked a political storm, with the opposition labelling it 'votebandi' and the government calling it 'Operation Clean Up.' RJD MP Manoj Jha raises concerns about transparency, timing, and lack of consultation, while BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain defends the exercise. The debate centers on allegations of illegal voters and the potential impact on disenfranchisement, with the matter now before the Supreme Court. Additionally, Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan defends Hindi as a unifying national language, urging people to learn and embrace it, invoking former President Abdul Kalam's love for Hindi. TDP leader Nara Lokesh also supports Hindi as a link language, while YSR Congress opposes Hindi imposition and Congress maintains an ambiguous stance. This issue highlights the divides among southern politicians over language policy.

Only Biharis will get to vote in Bihar, says BJP

BJP has said that Bihar residents need not be worried about reports of Bangladeshi, Myanmar and Nepali citizens in Bihar's voters' list found by the block level officers (BLOs). The party clarified that no outsider would be allowed to cast their vote in the upcoming assembly elections. "Rohingyas, Bangladeshis, Burmese and Nepalis have been found in the voters' list. Biharis will vote in Bihar to elect the next government. There is no need for the voters of Bihar to be afraid," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told ET. "No outsider can cast their vote in Bihar. Being a border state, Bihar has had infiltration problems for many years. The ECI is verifying it now." Hussain said the Opposition has been trying to spread the rumour that Muslim votes would be removed from the electoral rolls . "This is baseless. Valid voters need not be worried. BLOs are visiting every house and genuine voters should present their credentials as sought by ECI. The Opposition in Bihar knows they have lost the election before voting. Now, they are trying to find an excuse for their failures and blaming the EC," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Barefoot Shoes are Going Viral with Seniors - For Good Reason Barefoot Vitality Learn More Undo Meanwhile, the Opposition rebuffed the report questioning its authenticity. "Who are these sources? These are the same sources that said that Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore have been captured. SIR was conducted for the last time in 2003 under the UPA government. Since then, we have seen many elections. In those elections, we lost by three to four lakhs. Does that mean all these foreigners voted for PM Modi?" RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said. "This means the NDA are at fault for any dubious elements' names getting added to the voters' lists. That means all the elections they have won have been a fraud. SIR is a complete eyewash. ECI is working as a cell of a political party." Live Events

"They have made Election Commission a soft target": BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain slams Rahul Gandhi's "vote theft" remarks in Bihar

New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): After Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged that the NDA government is attempting a 'vote theft' in Bihar, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that the people of INDIA Bloc and Mahagathbandhan have made the Election Commission a 'soft target' and are continously targeting it. Speaking to ANI, Hussain also alleged that since the 'Bihar Bandh' has started, the party workers have harassed people. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav participated in Bihar Bandh today. 'These people of the INDI alliance and people of Mahagathbandhan are targeting the Election Commission. They have made the Election Commission a soft target. Today, a Bihar bandh on the verification of voter rolls is called. Since morning, they have started this work by harassing people on the road, burning tires, and causing trouble to the people. People are not with them, but only workers of Congress and RJD are doing all these things,' Hussain said. The BJP leader further claimed that the people of Bihar have 'completely rejected' the Bihar Bandh, and that both the Congress and RJD leaders have joined the rally for a 'photo shoot.' 'The public has completely rejected the Bihar bandh. Rahul Gandhi and Tejaswi Yadav will definitely go for this photo shoot, but the common people have rejected their Bihar bandh. Nobody is with them. Everyone knows that the Election Commission is a constitutional body that has been conducting elections for so many years,' Shahnawaz Hussain said. Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi warned that the pattern of electoral manipulation seen in Maharashtra could be repeated in Bihar. Speaking at the Bihar Bandh rally, Rahul Gandhi said, 'The way there was vote theft in the Maharashtra elections, a similar attempt is being made in Bihar.' Gandhi also raised questions over the rise in voter numbers between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra, alleging that all newly added votes went to the BJP. He claimed that the INDIA alliance's poor performance in the Maharashtra Assembly polls, despite a Lok Sabha majority, prompted a deeper data review that revealed suspicious voting patterns. He also said that between the Lok Sabha and assembly elections, one crore new voters were added, and in the assembly elections, 10 per cent more people voted. Speaking at the Bihar Bandh rally, Rahul Gandhi said, 'Shortly after the Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections were held in Maharashtra and Haryana. In the Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA alliance got a majority in Maharashtra. But just a few months later, in the assembly elections, the INDIA alliance did poorly. We didn't say much at the time, but we started working and looking into the matter. The 21st century is the century of data, so we started studying the data. As we looked into it, we discovered that between the Lok Sabha and assembly elections, one crore new voters were added. In the assembly elections, 10 per cent more people voted. When we checked where these new voters came from, we were surprised. In every constituency where voter numbers increased, the BJP won. All the new votes went to the BJP.' (ANI)

The former Union Minister said he prayed for Bihar and the nation's prosperity. Talking to ANI, he wished everyone a happy Eid. He said, 'Eid al-Adha is a festival of sacrifice. BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also offered prayers and while extending Eid-al-Adha greetings and urging citizens to uphold harmony and follow government guidelines, also remarked on the completion of one month of Operation Sindoor, stating that Pakistan, a 'territory of terrorism', must eliminate the executioners of oppression and crime who, he said, are a threat to both humanity and Islam. Speaking to reporters after offering Namaz at Imamia Hall, Shia Jama Masjid, Naqvi said that everyone should respect the government's guidelines and ensure that the spirit of unity and brotherhood is maintained across the country. 'Everyone should respect the government guidelines, and we should all take care that the thread of harmony and brotherhood does not weaken from anywhere. Best wishes to all countrymen on the occasion of Eid al Adha...' Naqvi said. Speaking on Operation Sindoor, which has completed one month, the BJP leader said, 'Pakistan, which is the territory of terrorism, will have to sacrifice the executioners of oppression and crime. It will have to be completely wiped out because these people are a threat not only to humanity but also to Islam. The country will never accept those who are playing the role of stooges of Pakistan...' (ANI)

Nation ready to respond to Pak, mock drill is part of our preparedness: Shahnawaz Hussain

New Delhi: BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain has said that India is fully prepared to give a strong and fitting response to Pakistan in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, emphasising that the upcoming mock drill is part of national preparedness against any nefarious designs by the enemy. Speaking to IANS, Hussain stated, 'Pakistan conspired in the Pahalgam terror attack to divide us. Our country is confident in its Prime Minister, its military, and its government. The nation must stay ready. A mock drill is being conducted tomorrow so that if the enemy attempts any misadventure, we know how to respond swiftly. This mock drill is part of that preparedness. Pakistan will get a strong, strict response.' According to the Ministry of Home Affairs notification to the states, the mock drill will be held across the country's 244 Civil Defence districts on Wednesday. "The conduct of the exercise is planned up to the village level. This exercise aims to assess and enhance the readiness of Civil Defence mechanisms across all States and Union Territories," said the notice. Hussain also took aim at Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani for his recent remarks suggesting that India should not stop Pakistan's water. 'Madani should know that Pakistan has shed our blood, and yet he says we should not even stop their water? Not just water, we will stop the wind! Now, no plane can cross through the air. No trade can take place through the sea. We will also teach Pakistan a lesson on land,' Hussain said. Reacting to Congress leaders mocking the Rafale jets, Hussain accused the party of acting irresponsibly. "The Congress party is compromising national interests. After the heinous incident in Pahalgam on April 22, where people were killed based on their religion and recitation of the 'Kalma', it is clear that Pakistan's conspiracy to divide India on religious lines was thwarted by our strong response. While the Congress claims to stand with the nation, leaders like Siddaramaiah oppose war, and ministers mock the Pulwama attack and our retaliation. Ajay Rai mocked Rafale, it's the language of Pakistan. The country is angry at the Congress, and if they don't stop, the people will teach them a lesson,' he warned.
