Amit Chavda appointed Gujarat Congress president, Tushar Chaudhary to lead legislature party

Weeks after Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Shaktisinh Gohil stepped down following the party's poor performance in the recent Assembly bypolls, the Congress on Thursday appointed senior leader Amit Chavda as the new state unit president. The party also named former Union Minister Tushar Chaudhary as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the Gujarat Assembly, replacing Mr. Chavda in that role. 'Congress president has appointed Mr. Chavda as the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect. Congress president has also approved the proposal for the appointment of Dr. Chaudhary as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Gujarat, with immediate effect,' said K.C. Venugopal, AICC general secretary (organisation), in a statement. 'The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC president Shaktisinh Gohil,' the statement added. Mr. Gohil had resigned after the Congress failed to secure a win in either of the two Assembly constituencies that went to bypolls last month. He was appointed GPCC president in June 2023, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Reacting to his appointment, Mr. Chavda said in a post on X: 'This is not just a post — it is a solemn responsibility to fight for every Gujarati and uphold the values the Congress Party stands for.' He added, 'As a devoted soldier of the party, I will work day and night to strengthen @INCGujarat, fulfill the aspirations of our people, and realise the vision of @RahulGandhi ji in Gujarat.' Power struggles: Gujarat Congress in turmoil

After Shaktisinh Gohil stepped down as the Gujarat Congress chief, the hunt for a successor turned murky. Soon, a viral message on social media platforms claimed that a former president, an OBC leader, was reappointed, sparking confusion. Congress insiders suspect this was a planted move by his rivals to sabotage his chances. While no one has claimed responsibility, the damage was done to his succession. Meanwhile, more than 15 Congress leaders rushed to Delhi to lobby with Rahul Gandhi, triggering buzz that one of them might land the top post. The misleading social media message declaring a new state chief only deepened the internal chaos. BJP ex-dist chief's graft claims on MLA sparks row The simmering internal rift in Gujarat's Vallabhipur BJP in Bhavnagar district has burst into the open, with its former district BJP president Mukesh Langaliya launching a scathing attack on the local MLA. The flashpoint came during a felicitation event for 37 village sarpanches in Limda, where Langaliya openly criticised the way of working of the BJP legislator. He accused the MLA of protecting a coterie of corrupt aides and alleged rampant corruption in causeway construction, Mamlatdar office projects, and National Highway works. The fact that such charges come from a BJP leader against his own MLA has sparked a row.

Best MLA award winner, party's Dalit face: All about Shailesh Parmar, Congress's ‘interim' in-charge in Gujarat

Though tendering their resignation by owning moral responsibility for electoral defeats is nothing new for party chiefs, as a norm, the post-holders would wait for a word from the top leadership before relinquishing charge. In what can be seen as departure from the rule, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Shaktisinh Gohil chose to leave the top job in the state party unit on his own on Monday by 'appointing' Shailesh Parmar, the party's Dalit MLA from the reserved Danilimda constituency in Ahmedabad city, as the in-charge of the party 'till the AICC appoints a new president'. This comes in the backdrop of the Congress's dismal performance in the Kadi and Visavadar bypolls. Gohil's decision has put Shailesh Parmar, 56, under renewed spotlight. Among the seniormost MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly, Shailesh Parmar has been winning the seat since 2012. Politics runs in the legislator's family as his father, the late Manharbhai (Manubhai) Parmar, was a formidable Dalit leader in Gujarat and a state minister in a previous Congress-run government. Before Danilimda, Shailesh Parmar also represented Shaher Kotda constituency, which was represented by his father till 1998. Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the seat in 2002, Shailesh Parmar wrested it back in 2007. In the last Assembly elections, Shailesh Parmar defeated the BJP's Naresh Vyas by a margin of over 13,000 votes. Shailesh Parmar is the party's deputy leader in the Assembly where the Congress's numbers have shrunk to 12. Shailesh Parmar has completed his Bachelor of Education from Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag, in Uttar Pradesh. By vocation, he is a farmer who is also involved in construction business. In the last Gujarat Assembly, Shailesh Parmar won the Best MLA award along with the BJP's Jitu Sukhadia. Shailesh Parmar had recently accompanied the team that represented Gujarat in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association meeting held at Sydney in November 2024. Besides Shailesh Parmar, Anirudh Dave from the BJP joined Speaker Shankar Chaudhary as observers.

Gujarat state Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil resigns following party's defeat in bypolls

Gujarat Congress chief Shaktisinh Gohil resigned following the party's defeat in Kadi and Visavadar assembly seats during the bypolls on Monday. In the bypolls, the Aam Aadmi Party's Gopal Italia clinched the Visavadar assembly seat, while BJP retained the Kadi assembly seat. Meanwhile, AAP state president Isudan Gadhvi declared victory and said, 'If there is anyone who can defeat the BJP, it is AAP… AAP is going to form the government in 2027. A foundation has been laid today.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo He was speaking shortly after AAP candidate Italia won the Visavadar by-election by a margin of over 14,000 votes. 'This is a victory of the people of Visavadar, of the farmers, of labourers and unemployed youth. This is a victory of the people of Gujarat,' Gadhvi said, adding, 'You must have seen that the BJP is not popular here. It does poaching with money, with power... But it poached one leader of AAP and the leaders of the party got the seat back.' Live Events The Visavadar seat was vacant since December 2023 after AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the BJP. In the bypoll held on June 19, Italia, former state AAP president, secured 65,295 votes after 18 of 21 rounds of counting, leading BJP's Kirit Patel, who got 51,222 votes, by 14,073 votes. Congress candidate Nitin Ranpariya finished third. Despite its dominance in Gujarat, the BJP hasn't won Visavadar since 2007. It had hoped to break the jinx this time but fell short once again. Meanwhile, the BJP retained the Kadi seat in Mehsana district. After 16 of 21 rounds of counting, BJP's Rajendra Chavda led with a comfortable margin of 35,608 votes over Congress candidate Ramesh Chavda. AAP had fielded Jagdish Chavda here. The seat was vacant since February following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. Voter turnout stood at 57.90% in Kadi and 56.89% in Visavadar. In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the BJP currently holds 161 seats, Congress 12, and AAP 4. One seat is with the Samajwadi Party and two with independents.
