Vaani Kapoor opens up on Gen-Z actresses shattering stereotypes

Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor has opened up about the changing landscape for women in cinema. She highlighted how a new wave of actresses is breaking barriers by embracing adrenaline-charged, high-octane roles. Kapoor praised this shift as a sign of growing strength, confidence, and versatility among female performers in the industry. The 'Shamshera' actress shared, 'A new wave of actresses is breaking barriers, taking on adrenaline-charged roles, showing that raw strength and deep emotion can thrive side by side on screen. Indian actresses are now fearlessly leading the action genre, something that was long overdue, and we're finally seeing a shift in the landscape.' Vaani Kapoor, who is all set to make her OTT debut with Netflix's thriller 'Mandala Murders,' also believes that actresses are getting meatier and more substantial projects on streaming platforms, which offer greater creative freedom and nuanced roles. Talking about her OTT debut, she stated, 'I was looking for something incredibly special and challenging to mark my debut on Netflix streaming, and I'm glad I found Mandala Murders, where I'm venturing into bolder territory and taking centre stage in a thriller that pushes me both physically and psychologically. It is a genre I've never explored before. Taking this fearless leap has challenged me to discover new layers of intensity, grit, and vulnerability, which I believe are essential for truly compelling storytelling.' The 'Shamshera' actress added, 'I love streaming because an actress gets more meatier projects and roles to show our craft on screen, which is more often very limited when it comes to theatrical movies, as it's mostly centred around our male actors.' On a related note, 'Mandala Murders, a first-of-its-kind mythological crime thriller series, is directed by Gopi Puthran. Bankrolled by YRF Entertainment, the show also features Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Surveen Chawla, and Shriya Pilgaonkar. The mystery thriller is set to premiere on July 25 on Netflix. Meanwhile, following the overwhelming response to 'The Railway Men', Netflix and Yash Raj Films have come up with edge of the seat thriller 'Mandala Murders'. Set against the backdrop of an eerie town called Charandaspur, the series revolves around a series of ritualistic killings linked to a centuries-old secret society. These murders under mysterious circumstances catch the attention of detectives Rea Thomas ( played by Vaani Kapoor) and Vikram Singh (played by Vaibhav Raj Gupta), drawing them into a web of secrets with several layers. As the two detectives decode some mysterious symbols and hidden motives during the course of their investigation, they learn about a secret society who are playing with the line between faith and madness. ‘The Bhootnii' Public Review by IANS: Sanjay Dutt starrer receives a lukewarm response, with viewers calling it horror-lite

Mumbai: Sanjay Dutt and Mouni Roy's latest release, 'The Bhootnii,' has opened to a lukewarm response from audiences, with many calling it an enjoyable one-time watch. The horror-comedy has sparked a range of opinions, with most viewers acknowledging its entertainment value while noting that it falls short of delivering genuine scares. At the heart of the praise is actor Sanjay Dutt. Audience members also had positive things to say about newcomer Palak Tiwari, whose performance exceeded expectations. One audience member told IANS, 'It's definitely a one-time watch, but we liked the movie. We didn't expect much, but it turned out to be better than we thought. Seeing Sanjay Dutt after such a long time was really refreshing. I was also pleasantly surprised by Palak's performance. The casting was strong, and the story was also fine. As I said, it's just a one-time watch." Another moviegoer stated, 'I liked the comedy the most. It was more of a horror-comedy—though not too heavy on the horror, it still had its enjoyable moments. Mouni Roy's look reminded me of Naagin—her makeup was quite similar. But overall, her acting was good.' Some audience members felt 'The Bhootnii' was an average film, describing it as 'horror-lite' with more emphasis on light moments than genuine scares. While the film delivered on comedy for some, others felt it didn't fully commit to the horror genre, leaving it somewhere in between. One of the audience members mentioned that while the performances, especially by Sanjay Dutt and Palak Tiwari, were commendable, the screenplay lacked the punch needed to truly elevate the story. The horror elements, they said, felt predictable and safe, making the film feel more like a family-friendly supernatural drama than a true horror-comedy. Still, many agreed that 'The Bhootnii' had its moments—especially in its visuals, music, and cast chemistry—but overall, it remained a one-time watch that plays it safe rather than taking bold creative risks. 'It was just okay,' said one viewer. 'The storyline didn't stand out, and the songs didn't make much sense to me.' On a related note, 'The Bhootnii' stars Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari, Beyounick, and Aasif Khan in pivotal roles. The 'Shamshera' actor takes on the role of a ghostbuster for the very first time in his career. 'The Bhootnii' hit theatres today, May 1.
