58 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 58

A look back at every Saints player to wear the No. 58 jersey. There are 58 days that separate us from the New Orleans Saints 2025 regular season opener at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The 58 jersey isn't currently worn by any member of the Saints. It was last worn by linebacker Anfernee Orji for 16 games last season. Here's a look at all who have worn No. 58 in New Orleans history. Saints' History of No. 58 Eli Strand was the first to suit up in No. 58 for the Saints, doing so for 14 games with three starts during the team's inaugural year of 1967. Strand also remains the only offensive player to wear 58 in a regular season game for New Orleans. Joe Federspiel was the first defensive player and Saints draft choice to don No. 58 for the franchise. A fourth round choice in the 1972 NFL draft, Federspiel played nine seasons and 130 games with the Saints. Over that span, he had 5 interceptions, 10 fumble recoveries, and 7.5 sacks. Federspiel was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 1993, the first linebacker to receive such an honor by the franchise. He also wore 58 for longer than any other player in Saints history. Glen Redd wore 58 with New Orleans in five seasons and for 68 games with 36 starts through the early 1980s. Redd had 2 interceptions, 2 sacks, and 2 fumble recoveries during his time in New Orleans. His tenure in No. 58 is quietly the third longest of the 17 players that wore the number with the Saints. After Redd, six different players wore No. 58 for the Saints over the next two decades. Only one, Brian Jones (33 games), wore it for more than one year. Scott Shanle arrived as an under-the-radar free agent acquisition in 2006. Shanle would go on to have a productive seven year and 97-game tenure for the Saints in No. 58. It is surpassed only by Federspiel in team history for the jersey. During Shanle's time with the Saints, he'd have 3 interceptions and 7.5 sacks with 6 fumbles forced. He was also an integral part of the team's Super Bowl XLIV championship title squad. Obum Gwachum showed some promise as a pass rusher during his time in New Orleans. However, he was among the seven players that wore 58 after Shanle retired in 2012, with all failing to do so for as long as 20 games. On that list was Kwon Alexander, who started his New Orleans tenure with 58 in 2020 before switching to No. 5 midway into the 2021 campaign. Alexander was productive with the Saints, but often injured and moved on as a free agent in 2022.

Countdown to Kickoff: Scott Shanle is the Saints Player of Day 58

A look back at the underrated career of Saints linebacker Scott Shanle. The New Orleans Saints are 58 days away from their 2025 regular season opener. New Orleans will kick off their year at home against the Arizona Cardinals. There is no New Orleans Saints player that wears No. 58 currently. Therefore, our choice for Saints Player of the Day is former linebacker Scott Shanle. Here's a look back at the underrated New Orleans defender. At St. Edward High School in Nebraska, Shanle played eight-man football. He was also a standout sprinter on the track team, where he set school records in the 100m (10.67) and 200m (22.3) while also lettering in basketball. Shanle was forced to walk on at the University of Nebraska because he hadn't played traditional high school football, but earned a scholarship by his second year after a redshirt. By his redshirt sophomore year of 2000, Shanle was a regular starter for the Cornhuskers. Over his last three seasons at Nebraska, Shanle had 6 sacks, 16 QB pressures, 17 tackles for loss, an interception, and broke up 11 passes. The St. Louis Rams selected Shanle among the final 12 picks in the 2003 NFL Draft. He'd make the team as a rookie, appearing in five games on special teams, but was released late in the year. The Dallas Cowboys picked up Shanle off waivers, and he'd make the 2004 Dallas roster. He played mostly special teams early in the 2004 campaign, but worked his way into the starting lineup by the end of the year and would start over half of his 15 games with the Cowboys in 2005. Over two years with Dallas, Shanle broke up 3 passes and had 1.5 sacks to go along with his 92 tackles. The Dallas offensive coordinator durung Shanle's two years there was Sean Payton. In 2006, Payton was hired as head coach of the New Orleans Saints. During 2006 training camp, Payton and the Saints traded a seventh round draft choice to the Cowboys to acquire Scott Shanle to deepen their linebacker unit. Shanle would start 15 of his 16 game appearances for New Orleans in 2006, finishing with 4 sacks and a career-best and team-high 99 total tackles. Shanle was a fixture on the New Orleans defense upon his arrival. Between 2006 and 2011, he'd start 88 of a possible 96 regular season contests. In 2008, Shanle was voted the Saints Defensive MVP after 87 tackles, a career-best 7 for loss, along with 2 sacks and 5 passes broken up. Shanle had 2 interceptions, recovered 2 fumbles, and had 3 stops for loss among his 69 total tackles during the team's Super Bowl championship season of 2009. His 10 tackles in Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts was second among all defenders in the win. Injuries limited Shanle to just seven games with the Saints in 2012, his final season in the NFL. Over seven years with the Saints, Shanle had 3 interceptions, 18 passes broken up, 6 forced fumbles, 7.5 sacks, and 25 stops for loss among 490 total tackles. According to Pro Football Reference, Scott Shanle had the second most tackles of any Saints player during the head coaching tenure of Sean Payton from 2006 to 2021.

Former Saints Super Bowl champ Scott Shanle has strong words for Derek Carr

Former Saints Super Bowl champ Scott Shanle has strong words for Derek Carr Scott Shanle hasn't minced any words when it comes to Derek Carr. The former Super Bowl champion and longtime New Orleans Saints linebacker shared his "two cents" in reaction to news that Carr leaked the news about his shoulder injury, possibly to avoid "the Kirk Cousins treatment" with the Saints looking to draft a rookie quarterback who might take his job. "If he's pouting because the Saints are gonna look for a young QB in the draft he's too thin skinned to be your quarterback and the guys in that locker room deserve better," Shanle wrote on social media, "A competitive person would say it's time to play so well the young guy won't touch the field anyways. Nothing is promised to anyone in the NFL. Everyone's time comes to an end. Nobody is owed anything." Shanle added that if Carr is really injured, he ought to be at the team facility working with team doctors and speaking with surgery specialists, not hanging out with his brother in Fresno: "Mrs Benson didn't pay you 40 million dollars a year to do car reviews on YouTube. Tough times will always reveal a man's character." Whew. Shanle saw firsthand what goes into being a franchise quarterback when he walked into the locker room every day to find Drew Brees was already there, working hard to play his best football. But Brees is, as Shanle says, one of one. Carr was always going to be chasing his legacy when the Saints first signed him. Nobody could have expected he would fall this far short.
