8 dead, 28 injured in stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple
Haridwar: A stampede on the pedestrian route to Mansa Devi temple near Har Ki Pauri claimed eight lives and injured 28 others, at least four critically, on Sunday morning. Those dead were identified as Shanti Devi (60), her husband Rambharose (65), both from Badaun, UP; Sakal Dev (35) from Araria, Bihar; Arush (6), Vicky Saini (18), Vishal Kumar (19) -- all three from Rampur, UP; Vakeel Prasad (45) from Barabanki, UP; and Vipin Saini (19) from Kashipur, Udham Singh Nagar. Diksha (26) and her daughter Akankshi (4) from Rampur; Phoolmati (52), Lucknow; and Kavita (23), Baghpat, UP, are said to be in critical condition. Officials at AIIMS Rishikesh said that 15 persons were brought to the hospital, out of which, five were discharged, four admitted in ICU ward and six in other wards. More than 5,000 devotees -- mainly from UP and Bihar -- were present on the route around 8:30 am at the time of the incident, which was possibly triggered by "rumours of electrical wires causing electrocution". Videos from the spot showed a huge rush of people, including children and women, at the narrow entrance of the temple. Eyewitnesses claimed there were hardly any efforts made to control the crowd. Speaking to TOI, the area's SHO Ritesh Shah said the crowd flow was "nothing unusual" in the morning. "We've seen even larger crowds during special occasions like kanwar yatra and Ganga Dussehra. The stampede may have been caused due to rumours after a few youngsters climbed the wall, and thereafter some devotees began to panic and fell on each other. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Baking Soda Tricks Everyone Should Know About Beach Raider Undo On any given day, six police personnel are present inside the temple premises and two stationed at the entrance of the pedestrian route. " CM Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the hospital to assess the condition of the injured and announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those dead and Rs 50,000 for each injured person. He also directed Haridwar district magistrate (DM) to provide urgent relief and assistance to all the victims and their families. "The pedestrian route, starting from the Upper Road, was immediately closed after the incident to avoid additional pressure at the site. Injured persons were initially shifted to district hospital. People died of chest injuries and no one died of electrocution," said DM Mayur Dixit. The DM added that a detailed magisterial probe has been ordered. President Droupadi Murmu and PM Narendra Modi were among those who expressed grief over the loss of lives in the stampede. In a post, the PM stated: "Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon." Later in the day, Mahant Ravindra Puri, president of Mansa Devi temple trust, announced Rs 5 lakh for the families of the dead and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Considered a 'sidhpeeth', Mansa Devi temple is situated on the Bilva hilltop in Haridwar. It is accessible by ropeway as well as pedestrian route. It attracts a large number of pilgrims round the year. Earlier, the way to the temple -- located in the vicinity of Haridwar range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve -- was arduous, and pilgrims had to walk through narrow serpentine paths to the hilltop (about 1,500 feet above sea level) on foot, but later a road was laid to make the journey easier. In 1995, Haridwar civic body got a ropeway installed.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The matter came to light when the victim's son returned home and went to her room in the early hours of Saturday. The deceased was identified as Shanti Devi. She was alone at home at the time of incident. After killing her, the assailants allegedly looted jewellery from her body, including a chain and earrings. The cupboard in the room was also found open. According to the family, valuables worth over Rs 4 lakh were stolen in the robbery. Sadar offering CT-scan on prescriptions from private docs
1 2 Ranchi: People carrying prescriptions from private doctors can also avail Computed Tomography Scan (CT) at a nominal charge of Rs 1,035 at Sadar hospital. The move is aimed to offer financial relief to patients, especially from low-income families, officials said. Since its launch on June 10, the modern diagnostic facility equipped with a 128-slice CT scan machine has seen a surge in footfall, with many patients reporting that they had long delayed the test due to high charges at private centres. Under public-private partnership (PPP) model, the service is being managed by Krishna Diagnostics. The initiative ensures that both Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries and non-Ayushman patients have access to affordable imaging services. While tests are free for Ayushman cardholders, others are charged as per Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates Rs 1,035 for CT scans and Rs 1,662 for MRIs. Ranchi civil surgeon, Dr Prabhat Kumar, said, " Patients no longer need referrals from government doctors. Anyone can walk in with any valid prescription from a private practitioner, register at the counter, and get the test done with no additional approval needed. For many, this flexibility has been transformative. Shanti Devi, a resident of Morabadi, said, "My father was asked to get a CT scan. Private labs quoted Rs 4,200, which we couldn't afford. At Sadar, we paid Rs 1,035, and everything was managed professionally. It was a huge relief." Another patient, Ashok Kumar from Lalpur, said, "I was hesitant to get the scan done due to cost. But when I heard that it's available at just Rs 1,035 at Sadar even on a private doctor's prescription, I didn't wait. The machine is modern, and the staff was very supportive." Sunita Kumari, a domestic worker who brought her 10-year-old son for a scan, said, "Earlier, I would've had to borrow money or skip the test. Now, I got it done at a cost we could manage. This is real help for people like us." Additionally, the hospital will start Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services at affordable rates for all patients, including those with prescriptions from private doctors. The service is expected to begin next week.

Eighteen dead in stampede at New Delhi train station
At least 18 people were killed, including 14 women and three children, and dozens injured in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, as thousands of passengers jostled for space on overcrowded platforms to board trains heading to the religious Maha Kumbh festival. The stampede was triggered by a sudden platform change announcement, forcing thousands of passengers to shift from platform 12 to platform 16, according to multiple eyewitnesses. Rajkumar Manjhi, 37, who had come to New Delhi with his family to board a train, was among those caught in the chaos. 'I lost my wife and daughter,' he told The Telegraph, his voice shaking. 'There was a huge rush near the ticket counter. My wife, Shanti Devi, and my daughter, Pooja Kumari, were crushed in the chaos. My son, Avinash, is missing. People were pushing, screaming. I don't know where he is.' The festival attracts tens of millions of people of Hindu faith every 12 years to the northern city of Prayagraj, and has a history of crowd crushes - including one last month, which led to the death of 30 people. As railway police and emergency responders struggled to clear the platforms, the aftermath painted a grim picture—scattered footwear, abandoned luggage, and the echoes of grief-stricken families searching for their missing loved ones. The authorities have said that the 'unprecedented' rush of passengers at two platforms -13 and 14 - led to chaos and panic ultimately causing the stampede about 10pm local time (4.30pm GMT). In an official statement, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP-railway), KPS Malhotra, reported that platform number 14 was already heavily crowded as the Prayagraj Express awaited departure. Additionally, delays in the Swatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express led to an increased passenger presence on platforms 12, 13, and 14, further contributing to the congestion. 'As per Chief Movement Inspector, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways due to which the station got overcrowded and became uncontrollable. There was a stampede at platform no. 14 and near escalator near platform no. 16,' Mr Malhotra said. He elaborated that the crowd surged within 15-20 minutes after the announcement of a special train, as passengers hurried to board. 'Two trains were delayed, and due to the increased footfall, the crowd grew massive. A few people sustained injuries. As of now, the situation is under control,' he said. Emergency services rushed to the scene as calls of distress poured in. 'I saw people gasping for breath, some collapsed on the platform,' said Meenakshi Sharma, who was frantically searching for her missing relatives. 'Children and women were the most affected. I begged people not to push, but no one listened. 'The crowd was so huge that it could not be controlled.' Another eyewitness, Yadwindra Singh, 43, from Rajasthan, said: 'I was going to take a holy dip but many trains were running late or were cancelled. It caused a huge rush of people at the railway station, something I have never seen before. 'Amid the chaos, I heard screams and saw people rushing towards the exit. It was like a nightmare as I saw people being trampled under their feet. It was chaotic and horrifying.' Ravi Kumar, a railway vendor, told local media that there was a huge crowd on platform numbers 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 - where there were trains for Prayagraj. 'I had never witnessed such a crowd before,' he told the PTI. Authorities initially dismissed reports of a stampede as mere rumours. It was only after bodies and the injured began arriving at hospitals that officials acknowledged the extent of the disaster. Prime Minister Narendra Modi later tweeted: 'Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.' A two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter and determine the cause of the stampede, executive director of information and publicity at the Railway Board, Dilip Kumar said. A sergeant with the Indian Air Force (IAF), Ajit, who was at the station at the time, described the moment chaos erupted. 'I tried to warn people over the loudspeakers not to crowd the platform, but no one was listening. The administration was doing its best, but the sheer volume of people made it impossible to control.' The world's largest congregation of humanity, the Hindu festival has already seen gigantic daily crowds, with nearly 148 million people attending since it began two weeks ago. The railway ministry said: 'An unprecedented rush situation developed today at about 10pm in New Delhi railway station near platforms 13 and 14. Some of the passengers present there on the platforms fainted due to this sudden rush further leading to the rumours of stampede like situation. This led to the spread of panic.' Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high level inquiry into the incident. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
