Bills predicted to cut ties with veteran defender who could land with hated AFC rival
Just one month after signing him, a veteran Buffalo Bills defender could be on the chopping block. Buffalo signed linebacker Shaq Thompson to a one-year, $1.25 million deal in June, but Ryan Talbot of believes he won't make the 53-man roster. Advertisement "Shaq Thompson has ties to Sean McDermott, but I can't justify a roster spot for him at this point. The veteran has missed most of the past two seasons and will have to stay healthy to have any shot of making the initial 53-man roster," Talbot wrote. Based off that, Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports named a few possible spots where Thompson could land and the Baltimore Ravens, who will be competing for a Super Bowl against the Bills in the AFC, were one of them. The Ravens can't ignore upgrading the defense since it hasn't been the same since they lost Clowney and Patrick Queen. It will only get worse before it gets better in the AFC, and the Ravens could pull off a one-year deal at best to put themselves in the driver's seat of at least having a ferocious defense. Thompson has played in just six games over the past two seasons and his small contract means the Bills aren't married to him. The Ravens have a question mark at linebacker next to Roquan Smith, so Thompson could end up being on their radar if he's cut loose. Advertisement Trenton Simpson has been disappointing early in his career and there's no telling what fourth-round rookie Teddye Buchanan will offer in Year 1. Thompson is no sure thing to be a solution in Baltimore if brought aboard, but he'd at least give the Ravens another option.

Bills Predicted to Cut Former First-Round Star in 53-Man Roster Projection
Bills Predicted to Cut Former First-Round Star in 53-Man Roster Projection originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shaq Thompson has pedigree here. And connections here. But maybe not a future here. Thompson, now 31, spent the first 10 years of his career with the Carolina Panthers. When that team released him back in February, not only was there uncertainty about the next steps of his career, but any new destination would be a major change for him. Advertisement Part of the issue? Thompson was coming off of two serious season-ending injuries in the last two seasons, allowing him to only play a total of six games in that time. However, some deep-rooted connections would point him toward his next move. ... To Buffalo. The Panthers drafted Thompson back in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, move orchestrated in some part with the help of Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott and Al Holcomb. Those three now hold roles with the Buffalo Bills. So it should not come too much as a surprise that the Bills finally claimed Thompson off the market this offseason, giving him another chance in the middle of their defense. Thompson called back to those connections in his initial conversations with reporters this week. Advertisement "Man . . . got released from Carolina—that's the first step," Thompson said. "But just stayed in connection with [Sean] McDermott, with [Brandon] Beane, with Al Holcomb. Just staying in connection with them, updating them just on surgeries and rehabs and where I'm at and stuff like that. I've been there with them in 2015, in Carolina. So kinda just always had that bond there." But ... It should also come as no surprise that as The Athletic projects the Bills' initial 53-man roster ... Thompson does not make the cut. Thompson's last full season of football in 2022 was arguably one of his most productive, totaling a career high 78 solo tackles that contributed to a tally of 135 tackles overall. Advertisement The Bills have a trusted core in place at linebacker already with Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard leading that charge. And based on the project, that will continue ... and so will Shaq's search for his next gig. As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Chuba Hubbard's comments have created quite the stir. And it wasn't a comment that was whispered or hidden. It was loud, confident, and honest. Former Panther Joins Bills in NFL Move That Feels Familiar
Former Panther Joins Bills in NFL Move That Feels Familiar originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For a decade, Shaq Thompson was the heartbeat of the Carolina Panthers' defense. He was a steady force, a leader in the locker room, and a fan favorite. Now, in a move that both stings and intrigues, the longtime linebacker is heading north to join the Buffalo Bills. Advertisement Thompson, 31, signed with Buffalo this week, officially closing the chapter on his 10-year career in Carolina, where he was a 2015 first-round draft pick and grew into the franchise's defensive captain. While the parting may be painful for Panthers fans, Thompson's new journey is deeply rooted in familiar soil. 'Man… got released from Carolina—that's the first step,' Thompson said with a grin during his first press conference as a Bill. 'But just stayed in connection with McDermott, with Beane, with Al Holcomb… we had that bond back in 2015.' That trio, Sean McDermott, Brandon Beane, and Al Holcomb was part of Thompson's early development in Carolina. Now all integral members of the Bills' leadership, they've built what many in the league jokingly call 'Carolina North,' a moniker for the pipeline that has delivered a steady stream of ex-Panthers to Orchard Park. Thompson joins a long list of former Panthers who've made the leap: Josh Norman, Star Lotulelei, Mario Addison, and A.J. Klein, among others. The connection runs deep, and apparently, so does the conversation. Advertisement 'Oh yeah, for sure,' Thompson laughed when asked about the 'Carolina North' running joke. 'Guys talk. You want to know what the other locker room is like, what's different, what's better, how they win.' For Panthers fans, Thompson's departure is bittersweet. He was more than just a linebacker, he was a cornerstone. With 818 career tackles, 12 sacks, and 4 interceptions across 119 starts, he embodied toughness and longevity in a franchise that's struggled with continuity. Thompson was there for the highs and the lows. From Super Bowl 50 to multiple coaching changes and rebuilds, he stayed, he led, and he gave everything to the city of Charlotte. Advertisement And now, he'll get a chance to prove he's still got plenty left in the tank, just wearing a different shade of blue. The football gods have a sense of humor, though. Panthers fans won't have to wait long to see their old friend again. In Week 8, Thompson returns to Bank of America Stadium as the Bills face the Panthers in a matchup already circled on every Carolina calendar. For a player who gave everything to one team for a decade, Thompson's journey continues with purpose, and maybe a little unfinished business.
