Activists, police spar over ban on Sharan Pumpwell

Chikkamagaluru: There was a argument between right-wing activists and police in Chikkamagaluru town on Monday. A large number of activists reached the town to submit a memorandum to the district administration, demanding the lifting of the ban imposed on right-wing activist Sharan Pumpwell. Deputy commissioner CN Meena Nagaraj has banned Sharan from entering the district for 30 days from July 6. A right-wing organisation has invited him to several events in Chikkamagaluru. Following the recommendation of the Chikkamagaluru superintendent of police, the DC, as per Section 163 of the BNSS, barred Sharan from entering the district. The right-wing activists took out a procession from Azad Park to the DC office, but were stopped by police near the office of the superintendent of police. An argument broke out as police denied permission to visit the DC. However, only 10 persons were allowed to submit the memorandum. People were not allowed to enter the SP and DC's office when the protest was on, as the police intensified security at both offices.

Police book suo motu case against Sharan Pumpwell for alleged hate speech

The Udupi Town Police on Thursday (July 3, 2025) booked Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sharan Pumpwell for hate speech in the town earlier in the day. In his complaint, Udupi Town Police Sub-Inspector Bharatesh Kankanawadi said that when he was surfing social media on Thursday evening, he came across a video clip of Mr. Pumpwell's address to the media. In it, the accused stated that the Kunjalu cow butchering issue in Brahmavara taluk was a 'conspiracy by Islamist forces using Hindus' to create unrest in the country. 'Just as two Hindu youth were used by Islamist forces in the murder of Suhas Shetty in Bajpe on May 1, they might have used the six Hindus, who were arrested by the police later, to create unrest in society,' Mr. Pumpwell said in the video. He had also said 'Islamist forces' were attempting to create unrest in society using Hindus. The video clip in question was circulated widely on different social media platforms and had the potential to create unrest in society by fomenting enmity between groups on the ground of religion, the PSI said in his complaint. The statement, given when the investigation was in progress at a press conference, was aimed at creating unrest in society, he said. Accordingly, police booked a case under Section 353 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita against Mr. Pumpwell for issuing statements conducing to mischief. Mr. Pumpwell's statements were made at a press conference in Udupi on Thursday.

K'taka BJP objects to arrest of VHP leader, says Cong govt harassing Hindu activists

Mangaluru (Karnataka): Karnataka BJP has objected to the arrest of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Sharan Pumpwell and warned the Congress-led state government that if the trend of arresting Hindu activists continues, it will have to face the consequences. Sharan Pumpwell was arrested on Tuesday on charges of calling for a bandh following the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru. However, the police had to release him after presenting him before a judge, as the court granted him bail. Hindu activists expressed outrage over Pumpwell's arrest, which came in the wake of the murder of a man from the minority community near Bantwal on Tuesday. BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra stated, 'The action taken by Mangaluru police to arrest Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Sharan Pumpwell - allegedly for calling a bandh after the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru - is highly condemnable.' 'Since the Congress government came to power in the state, Hindus have not been receiving adequate protection. Instead, this government has been intimidating and harassing Hindu activists through the police. Arresting them for trivial reasons and filing false cases seems like an attempt to silence them,' Vijayendra alleged. He further accused the Congress government of pursuing appeasement politics. 'This government, which repeatedly shelters anti-national and jihadi forces, is now targeting Hindu activists and leaders. BJP Karnataka will not tolerate this,' he warned. 'I caution the state government - if such arrests continue, the government alone will be responsible for the consequences,' Vijayendra asserted. Sharan Pumpwell was arrested by the Kadri police following protests by Muslim community members and leaders, who demanded the arrest of Hindu activists for delivering hate speeches after Suhas Shetty's murder. An FIR had been registered against Sharan Pumpwell for calling a bandh to condemn Suhas Shetty's murder 20 days earlier. Hindu activists questioned the timing of the police action and alleged that the arrest was made to appease the Muslim community. Following his arrest, hundreds of Hindu activists gathered in front of the police station and demanded his immediate release.

VHP leader Sharan Pumpwell arrested in Mangaluru, released on bail

The city police on Tuesday (May 27, 2025), arrested Sharan Pumpwell, joint secretary of South Karnataka wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). According to the police, the arrest was made as Mr. Pumpwell had called for a bandh across Dakshina Kannada on May 2, in protest against the murder of Suhas Shetty, a murder accused and a Hindutva activist, near Bajpe on May 1. Mr. Pumpwell also did not appear before police for inquiry in a case registered against him. However, Kishore Kumar, advocate of Mr. Pumpwell told The Hindu that a magistrate released Mr. Pumpwell on bail. 'Following medical examination, Mr. Pumpwell was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate at his home office. The magistrate accepted the bail application and relesed Mr. Pumpwell,' the advocate said. A police release said that the post-mortem of Shetty was conducted at the AJ Hospital in the city in the early hours of May 2. During that night, outside the hospital premises, the VHP leader addressed the media alleging that Shetty was murdered by 'Jihadi Islamic terrorists.' He further claimed that the banned organisation PFI was directly involved. He also announced that the VHP and other Hindu groups would observe a district-wide bandh from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 2, asking people to shut down shops, offices, and other establishments in protest. Subsequently, when the public did not respond to the bandh, followers of Mr. Pumpwell, allegedly incited by his statement, created unrest in various parts of Mangaluru. This led to damage to public property, communal tension, and disruption of public peace. A suo moto case was registered in this connection against Pumpwell at Mangaluru East Police Station in Crime No. 75/2025 under Sections 49, 196(1), 324(2), 324(4), 324(5), and 353(2) of the BNS. During the investigation, necessary evidence was collected. The accused was served two notices under the BNSS to appear for an inquiry, but failed to comply and did not cooperate. Therefore, he was taken into custody, interrogated, and is being produced before the court, the release said. Protests outside hospitals Meanwhile, earlier in the day, a group of supporters of Abdul Rehman, who was murdered in Bantwal Rural police station limits on Monday (May 26, 2025), blocked the movement of the vehicle of Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal when the official was moving out of the mortuary of a private hospital in Deralakatte after seeing the body of Rehman. The protestors demanded the arrest of Sharan Pumpwell and other VHP leaders for their inflammatory speeches. A similar protest was held in front of another private hospital in Falnir in Mangaluru, where Kalandar Shafi, who was injured in the attack in Bantwal Rural police station limits, was undergoing treatment.
