Sewa welcomes over 80 students to Future Engineer Camp in Sharjah

The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (Sewa) welcomed 85 students aged 12 to 14 to the Future Engineer Camp. The programme, being held from July 7 to 17 at the Union Women's Association in the Halwan area, features nine educational and awareness workshops in the first week and field trips and recreational activities in the second week. Rashid Al Marzouqi, the Director of the Media and Communications Department at Sewa, explained that more than 400 students applied to join the camp, with 85 selected based on specific criteria, including priority for Emirati residents. The Future Engineer Camp serves as an ideal platform to prepare students for promising professional futures, equipping them with technical skills, developing creativity and innovation, introducing them to sustainable energy sources, and teaching conservation behaviors and safety practices. He emphasised that nurturing students' skills at this stage through creative approaches helps instil environmentally conscious decision-making and motivates them to use their time productively. The camp serves as a model of social responsibility, designed to enrich their summer experiences while strengthening their abilities.

Renting in Sharjah? SEWA will now switch on utilities automatically

If you're renting a new home in Sharjah, here's some good news. Starting now, there's no need to go through the hassle of activating electricity, water, and gas services yourself. Thanks to a new digital system, these utilities will be switched on automatically as soon as your tenancy contract is attested by the municipality. Yes, that means no more separate applications, no more waiting in line, and no more back-and-forth between government departments. This seamless new service is part of a joint initiative between the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (Sewa) and Sharjah Municipality. Once your rental contract is attested, the system kicks in automatically, sending you a text with the required deposit amount. As soon as the deposit is paid, your utilities will be activated, no further action required. Pretty convenient, right? The move is part of Sharjah's wider digital transformation plans, aimed at simplifying services and improving the resident experience through smart tech. What's changed? Previously, tenants had to: Attest the rental contract at the municipality Then separately visit SEWA to apply for services Submit the attested lease, Emirates ID and more And pay a deposit before utilities were activated Now? Just attest the lease and pay the deposit. That's it. The whole process is handled through an integrated e-link system between Sewa and the municipality, meaning no extra paperwork, no chasing documents, and no unnecessary trips. Why this matters Beyond the obvious convenience, this is also a win for operational efficiency. It speeds up move-ins, reduces admin for landlords, and improves customer satisfaction, key goals in the UAE's push toward streamlined digital services. 'This is not just a technical upgrade,' added Al Askar. 'It's about transforming the user journey, from tenancy contract to moving in, without extra steps.' So whether you're a new tenant or relocating within the emirate, Sharjah is now making the whole process smoother and a little less stressful. Looking for a cosy café in Sharjah to unwind? Sharjah expands power grid, replaces overhead electric cables in some rural areas

Sharjah's power grid has undergone a major expansion across the central region — energising more than 15 key locations in a move aimed at boosting reliability and meeting the growing electricity needs of emerging residential and economic zones. The project by Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) saw the installation of over 81.7km of high- and low-voltage cables, covering areas such as Al Dhaid, Madam, Maliha, and Al Bataeh. It forms part of SEWA's plan to modernise infrastructure in non-coastal areas and improve efficiency by reducing power loss across the network. The works are part of a larger shift to provide more dependable and high-capacity electricity services outside city centres. 'We are witnessing steady development in the central region, and our role is to ensure the power network grows with it. This isn't a temporary fix. It's a long-term investment to serve the community and support future expansion,' Eng. Khalifa Mohammed Al Tunaiji, Director of SEWA's Central Region, told Khaleej Times. SEWA also connected more than 45 residential, agricultural, industrial, and government projects to the upgraded grid. Among the major developments that received power are Sharjah Safari, the Wheat Farm, Al Dhaid University, Al Jubail Market, the Wildlife Museum, and several schools and mosques. As part of the upgrade, SEWA began replacing overhead lines with underground cable systems — a step typically limited to urban infrastructure. Al Tunaiji said the underground shift will enhance safety, improve network stability, and help protect the grid during adverse weather conditions. 'This is about providing equal service to all areas of Sharjah — urban or rural,' he added. The central region, once considered peripheral, has seen a steady rise in development with new housing projects, agricultural ventures, and public facilities. SEWA's infrastructure expansion is aligned with Sharjah's broader vision for sustainable and inclusive growth across the emirate. Looking ahead, SEWA plans to install more distribution substations and complete the removal of all remaining overhead lines in the central region by 2026, Al Tunaiji confirmed. 'We're committed to building a grid that's ready for the future — reliable, efficient, and accessible to everyone,' he said. SEWA's latest rollout reflects a growing national focus on infrastructure equity and energy security as the UAE continues to expand services into emerging regions and satellite towns.

SEWA to remove high-voltage overhead lines

Project objectives and progress The project is part of the authority's plan to modernise electrical networks and facilitate the delivery of the Union Railway project. It reflects ongoing efforts to improve energy distribution efficiency while ensuring high levels of environmental and urban safety. The underground cables have been successfully operationalised, and the overhead lines have been isolated. The overall progress in removing high-voltage towers stands at about 50%, with 17 out of 37 towers dismantled and 20 still in the dismantling process. Commitment to quality and safety Saeed Al Suwaidi, Chairman of Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority, emphasised that this project is vital for providing a safe and sustainable environment that supports developmental projects in the emirate, especially with urban expansion and major national projects like the Union Railway. He added that the authority is committed to executing the work with the highest standards of quality and safety, adhering to specified timelines, reflecting its developmental and national responsibilities. Key areas of implementation The project encompasses several key areas, including the Al-Warehouse Land, where the completion rate has reached 92%, with work expected to finish by the end of May 2025. Additionally, work is planned for the Hill City area, Mleiha Street, and Emirates Road, with completion targeted for June 2025. Execution phases The implementation phases involve dismantling overhead wires, followed by the removal of towers and their foundations, with work expected to continue until mid-June 2025. This project significantly enhances the readiness of Sharjah's electrical infrastructure and prepares vital sites for future strategic projects, notably the National Railways project.
